Low wage paying jobs tend to attract people at low socioeconomic levels that don't have their lives together.
Add to it the stress of dealing with the public, poor leadership, and all it takes is the smallest slight of disrespect to set somebody off.

When you're at the lowest of society, all you have is your respect, and are usually willing to go to extremes to preserve or restore it.
