Riverdale Season 3 Villain Gargoyle King Revealed in New Image

Not to be left behind by upcoming sister show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Archie Comics adaptation Riverdale will be introducing a sinister new presence called the Gargoyle King. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared a photo of the season 3 villain on social media, along with the promise that the Gargoyle King will be "gruesome, gory, grim, and gnarly."

The second season of Riverdale ended on a cliffhanger, with Archie arrested during his student body president inauguration for a crime he didn't commit. According to the official synopsis, season 3 will kick off with Archie's friends trying to save him from going to jail - but that won't be the only problem that they have to contend with. The Black Hood killer (well, one of them) is now behind bars, but the Gargoyle King will be stepping up to take his place.

With just two weeks left to go until Riverdale's season 3 premiere, Aguirre-Sacasa offered a chilling tease of what's to come on Twitter. Along with a picture of the Gargoyle King stalking a wooded area, he included a string of mysterious emojis: a snake, an old key, a fire, a playing card with a Joker on it, and a game die. The snake seems to be an obvious reference to the Southside Serpents, but the other symbols will likely only reveal their meaning as Riverdale season 3 unfolds.

Riverdale has flirted with supernatural themes in the past, but it's safe to say that the Gargoyle King is probably just a person in a costume, not an actual monster. The design brings to mind a wendigo, with the branches that make up its wings similar to the antlers of the wendigo, but it also has two horns and spikes that form a crown on its head. The Gargoyle King was first spotted in a promo for Riverdaleseason 3, which also showed it wearing a necklace with teeth or bones and a mask with a face painted on it. It's certainly a more elaborate disguise than what the Black Hood came up with, but who is hiding underneath it?

Aguirre-Sacasa's tweet also indicates that Riverdale season 3 is going to get pretty violent and step up the horror elements of the show. Despite last season's serial killer plotline, there weren't a lot of overly gruesome deaths - just a lot of shootings. However, that one particularly shocking murder during the school's musical production of Carrie may have set the tone for the "gruesome" and "gory" things to come.

Netflix and Warner Bros. settle with Satanists over 'Sabrina' statue
This probably wasn't a fight they wanted to continue.

If you guessed that Netflix and Warner Bros. would rather not entangle themselves in a $150 million lawsuit from the Satanic Temple over a statue... you guessed correctly. The companies have settled with the Temple over claims the goat-headed statue in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina violated the copyright and trademark rights for the Temple's own Baphomet statue. While most of the terms of the deal aren't pubilc, the Temple said Netflix and Warner Bros. have recognized the "unique elements" of the statue in the credits for already-filmed Sabrina episodes.

It's not clear if this will affect the statue's presence in future episodes.

In its statement, the Temple said it had "amicably" reached a truce, but also said that it received "hate mail" from people concerned it might wreck the show. It argued that people had misplaced priorities and were focused more on their entertainment than weightier issues like religious liberty.

Regardless of whether or not people had their hearts in the right place, it's understandable why Netflix and Warner Bros. would try to put the issue to bed relatively quickly. Even if the money wasn't an issue, a drawn-out legal battle with the Temple wasn't exactly going to look good for either company. The Temple had also been looking for an injunction to block Netflix from distributing the show, and might have asked for more drastic edits even if it was fine with Sabrinastaying online.

On Sunday, Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse denied an allegation of sexual assault leveled at him by an anonymous Twitter account earlier in the day, saying the accusations were “the latest claim in a series of incidents seeking to baselessly cancel my cast mates and me.” Tweeted the actor, “False accusations do tremendous damage to victims of actual assault. Furthermore, I would never seek to silence anybody. I encourage that people look into the accusations themselves, as the events detailed were factually untrue.”
According to the Twitter account, the user was allegedly assaulted by Sprouse in 2013 following a party at NYU. According to Buzzfeed, other allegations of sexual abuse and harassment subsequently cropped up against Sprouse’s Riverale co-stars Vanessa Morgan, KJ Apa, and Lili Reinhart from a different anonymous account. The user eventually declared, “Do you see how easy it is to lie and you guys will believe it?” potentially as an attempt to cast doubt on the validity of the claim against Sprouse.
Reinhart also addressed the accusations Sunday, retweeting Sprouse’s thread about the allegation. “I have always taken sexual assault allegations seriously,” she tweeted. “But it was proven that this account was created specifically to create false stories about me and my cast. I can’t think of something more twisted than lying about sexual assault.”
“We are looking into taking legal action,” wrote Reinhart. “This kind of sick behavior only harms true survivors. This was incredibly triggering for me and scary because I’ve always supported survivors and believed them. I hope and pray this does not discourage real survivors from speaking out about their experiences.”

The CW Gives Early Renewals To 12 Series: ‘Riverdale,’ ‘Walker,’ ‘All American’ And More
By Alex Zalben @azalben Feb 3, 2021 at 4:00pm639 Shares

As The CW Network often does, it has announced early renewals for 12 current series for next season, as well as additional episodes for its massive hit Walker and the upcoming Superman & Lois.

“Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season,” said Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and CEO of The CW Network via statement provided to Decider. “As The CW’s 2020-2021 season kicks into high gear, we are thrilled creatively with the direction of our first new shows out of the gate, Walker and Superman & Lois, that we wanted to order the additional episodes to complete their first seasons, and we are particularly pleased with the huge success of the launch of Walker, which debuted as our most watched series premiere in 5 years.”

The renewals span the gamut of CW series, including several that have yet to premiere new seasons in 2021. The series being ordered for the 2021-2022 season include: Walker (Season 2); All American (Season 4); Batwoman (Season 3); Charmed (Season 4); DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 7); Dynasty (Season 5); The Flash (Season 8); In the Dark (Season 4); Legacies (Season 4); Nancy Drew (Season 3); Riverdale (Season 6); and Roswell, New Mexico (Season 4).

In addition, the network is ordering five additional episodes of Walker, bringing its total episode count for the 2020-2021 season to 18; and two additional episodes of the February 23 debuting Superman & Lois, bringing its 2020-2021 total to 15.

Not included in the list are Supergirl and Black Lightning, which are entering their final seasons on The CW. Supergirl‘s Season 6 premiere is currently undated, while Black Lightning premieres February 8, and is broadcasting a back-door pilot in the upcoming season as a potential spinoff. Stargirl, which has already been picked up for a second season, is also not on the list, as are The Outpost, Pandora and Two Sentence Horror Stories, and the yet to be broadcast new series Kung Fu and The Republic of Sarah. However, additional renewals may be announced at a later date.

A number of projects are also in various stages of development at The CW, including the aforementioned Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller, an All American spinoff, the long gestating The Lost Boys reboot, superhero series Naomi and Wonder Girl, and an adult take on The Powerpuff Girls, among others.

Unlike other networks, The CW held off on new programming after the COVID shutdown last March, opting instead to broadcast mostly reality programming, acquisitions, and the final episodes of Supernatural. The new season kicked off in earnest in January of this year, with Pedowitz noting back in May that he wanted to give creators enough time to figure out how to properly structure and shoot their seasons given the new reality.

Similarly, though the announcement notes that these series are for the “2021-2022” season, there are no premiere dates currently scheduled. As is, many of the currently running shows have shortened season orders (19 episodes, for example, versus a regular 22), and will most likely continue to be broadcast through June or July. Given a quick turnaround, it is possible that series could almost immediately pick up filming again in time to begin broadcasting for a regular October start date — the network’s traditional kick-off period — something they’re clearly trying to allow for by giving the pickup notices now, versus the industry standard in April/May.

Regardless, for the most part fans of The CW’s series can rest easy, knowing their faves will be back for at least one more go-around.

Another Riverdale star has left the building.
Mark Consuelos confirms that he is in fact exiting the show, having played Hiram Lodge, father to Veronica (Camila Mendes), for four seasons on the hit CW drama.
"First and foremost, I would like to thank [showrunner] Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for this incredible opportunity," the actor said in a statement. "Never before has playing a character that was so bad, felt so good. Huge thanks to the Riverdale fandom, to the brilliant crew and amazing cast, whom I consider dear friends and family."
Aguirre-Sacasa commented in his own statement, stating that Wednesday night's episode, which marked the season 5 finale, was his "swan song playing our hunky villain."

Spoiler warning: Riverdale's latest finale saw Veronica and Archie (KJ Apa) gathering the town together to bear witness to Hiram's exile after obtaining footage of Hiram killing Vito (Louis Ferreira) in a hospital. She tells him to never step foot back in Riverdale. And, apparently, he doesn't. At least the fans got to see him finally rock the famous Hiram stache.
"From the moment Mark joined us, he was up for literally anything, a hundred percent committed to making Archie's life a living hell," he said. "And what's funny is, Mark couldn't be more different from Hiram. A classy pro and the sweetest guy, always looking out for everyone. We wish Mark the best and hope this isn't the last we've seen of Hiram Lodge."

Consuelos has expressed how much he misses his family while having to travel to Vancouver to shoot the show. In the past, he posted photos of his loved ones on Instagram during production with captions like, "1 month down…3 to go….missing my home team."

He's also now executive producing an All My Children revival for ABC with wife Kelly Ripa.

Ryan Grantham, the Canadian actor who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March in the killing of his mother, allegedly plotted to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well.
Grantham, 24, began his sentencing hearing Monday in the British Columbia Supreme Court, which will determine how long he is to serve before being eligible to apply for parole. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence, and the period of parole ineligibility ranges from 10 to 25 years.
According to the CBC, Grantham shot his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head as she played piano in March 2020. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder earlier this year, after initially being charged with first-degree murder.
At the sentencing proceedings, prosecutors have painted a picture of Grantham's mental state at the time of his mother's death. On Monday, the court reportedly heard how Grantham rehearsed the murder and took videos throughout the proceedings, including footage after the killing in which he confessed and showed his mother's body.

Grantham allegedly loaded his car the next day with three guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails, camping supplies, and directions to Trudeau's family home.
According to Complex Canada, Grantham mentioned his plan to kill the prime minister in a statement to police, as well as excerpts from his private journal read in court. Grantham never made it to Trudeau's residence, and instead went to Vancouver police headquarters to turn himself in.
CBC reports that the prosecution has referenced psychiatric reports that indicate Grantham was going through an "intense period of clinical depression" during the time leading up to the murder. Grantham allegedly decided to kill his mother "to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit."
The psychiatric reports also showed, per CBC, that Grantham was "experiencing urges to commit violence and kill himself."

A former child actor, Grantham has appeared in several well-known films and TV series, including Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Supernatural, Riverdale, and iZombie.

Riverdale actor Ryan Grantham sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother

He will not be eligible for parole for 14 years.

Former child star Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting his mother in 2020.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Riverdale actor, 24, was given a life sentence in the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Tuesday, and will not be eligible for parole for 14 years, according to the CBC.
Grantham's sentence was expected, as he had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence in Canada. It was not known, however, how long he would have to wait to apply for parole.
Prosecutors said in a June hearing that on March 31, 2020, Grantham shot his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head as she played piano. The court reportedly learned that Grantham rehearsed the murder and took videos throughout the proceedings, including one in which he confessed and showed his mother's body.

Grantham also allegedly loaded his car the next day with three guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails, camping supplies, and directions to the home of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with the alleged intention to kill him. However, he instead turned himself in to police in Vancouver.
At the sentencing this week, CBC reports that Justice Kathleen Ker considered it a "saving grace" that Grantham chose not to go through with a killing spree. She also noted the "life-shattering" impacts of the crime, as made evident by victim impact statements from the actor's sister.
According to a CBC report in June, psychiatric reports indicated Grantham was going through an "intense period of clinical depression" before the murder, with "urges to commit violence and kill himself." Grantham allegedly decided to kill his mother, who was battling cancer at the time, "to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit."
On Tuesday, Ker said she considered the actor's mental health problems to be a mitigating circumstance in the murder. She also note that Grantham is currently receiving psychiatric help in prison.
