Bronze Tupac, life-size, stands atop a granite block in the middle of a spritzing fountain shaped like a cross. It was unveiled in 2005, on the ninth anniversary of his death-by-gunfire. It was the centerpiece of the Peace Garden at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts, which was run by Tupac's mom.

Tupac is shown wearing a suit and a cross and carrying a Bible. The inscription in the pedestal quotes Tupac: "I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world." Some have complained that all of the cross-and-Bible iconography is a bit much.

Theories abound as to who killed Tupac, and some believe that, like Elvis, he's still alive -- waiting for the right moment to reenter the spotlight. If that's true, then the Tupac statue would be a good place to find him, since he would probably stop by to check it out from time to time.

The arts center was shuttered in late 2014, but the statue still stands in the adjacent park.

What a waste.

If there is an afterlife, I wonder what it's like to sit back looking at a life so accomplished, full of achieving great heights, doing what you loved, touching so many, only to realize that as you are leaving it, how soon it was over. Pac could have still been around but he left the party early over some stupid shit.

20 years after his death in Las Vegas, Tupac Shakur lives on

The fence he speaks of no longer stands, gone with it all the flowers threaded through its links, the homemade memorials torn from the pages of magazines.

A new barricade has since been erected on the vacant lot behind the Flamingo, guarding acres of weeds, but old memories linger.

“People would put stuff up on it, pictures, collages,” recalls Mikey Porter, eyeing the area where said fence once stood from a Shell gas station across the street. “They’d light candles.”

When Porter — a longtime Vegas hip-hop scene fixture who goes by the name Mikey V.I.P. — has a DJ or MC gig at the House of Blues or the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip, he makes a point of driving by this spot.

“Every time I cross Koval and Flamingo,” he says, facing the intersection in question, “I say ‘peace’ to him.”

Porter didn’t know “him” personally, never had any one-on-one time with Tupac Shakur, but he felt like he did — as did the half dozen other rappers and DJs who flank Porter on a recent evening.

As did millions.

This is one of the reasons why, 20 years after Shakur passed away following a drive-by shooting at this very location — a crime that remains unsolved — he still is an indelible figure in hip-hop, a firebrand, a chameleon, a clenched fist, a genre’s id and superego at once.

Two decades ago on Sept. 13, Shakur died.

Murder of Tupac Shakur
On September 7, 1996, American hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The shooting occurred at 11:15 p.m. Pacific timewhen the car with Shakur stopped at a red light at East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.Shakur was struck by four .40 caliber rounds fired from a Glock:two in the chest, one in the arm, and one in the thigh. He died from his wounds six days later from respiratory failure that led to cardiac arrest after the removal of his right lung in the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.

Tupac Shakur was a great rapper, but he was also a phenomenal actor as well. In recognition of his thespian work, TV One’s popular series, Unsung, will explore the late rapper’s impressive acting skills.

Unsung: Hollywood will salute 2Pac’s career in film and television. The series will chronicle his start as a young thespian at his alma mater, Baltimore School for the Arts, where he trained to be an actor alongside his BFF Jada Pinkett-Smith.
The series also will detail his rise in Hollywood following his iconic portrayal as Bishop in the 1992 film, Juice. From there it led to his other acclaimed roles in Poetic Justice and Above the Rim. After his untimely death in September 1996, 2Pac appeared in three more films: Bullet, Gridlock’d and Gang Related. In addition, the program features guest commentary from John Singleton, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Leon, Andre Harrell and more.

“Tupac is iconic and he transcends music and television. We’ve heard his story told before, but as a musician. We don’t think he got credit for his acting prowess,” said TV One’s Jubba Seyyid, senior director of Programming & Production (via Rolling Out). “He was as talented an actor as he was a musician. Actually, he was a triple threat: Music, acting and activism. Possibly if he hadn’t left us, he would be participating in Oscar-worthy performances by now because that’s just the type of talent he was.”

True indeed.
