The White House official charged with leading the U.S. response to deadly pandemics left nearly two years ago as his global health security team was disbanded. Federal funding for preventing and mitigating the spread of infectious disease has been repeatedly threatened since President Trump’s election.


Despite the mounting threat of a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, Trump said he has no regrets about those actions and that expertise and resources can be quickly ramped up to meet the current needs.
Former federal officials and public-health experts argue that an effective response to a epidemiological crisis demands sustained planning and investment. While the administration’s response to coronavirus has been criticized in recent weeks as slow and disjointed, people in and outside the White House have warned for years that the nation is ill prepared for a dangerous pandemic.

“You build a fire department ahead of time. You don’t wait for a fire,” said Tom Inglesby, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “There is an underappreciation for the amount of time and resources required to build a prepared system.”

Officials at the White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not respond to interview requests.
Under pressure to step up the U.S. response to Ebola, President Barack Obama in 2014 appointed Ronald Klain, a veteran Democratic operative, to serve as an “Ebola czar.” The Obama administration also set up a special National Security Council team to oversee epidemic preparedness on a permanent basis.

The global health security team continued to operate during Trump’s first year in office, before John Bolton dismantled the unit when he took over as national security adviser in 2018. That led to the abrupt departure of its leader, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, who had led the White House’s anti-malaria efforts under Obama and President George W. Bush. Ziemer is the senior deputy assistant administrator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance at USAID

Glitches in the CDC testing system have thwarted wide-ranging surveillance testing to track the disease and eliminate concerns about healthy people simply battling a common cold.

China currently has the capability to test 1.6 million people a week for COVID-19, and South Korea has already tested some 65,000 people, reported Science Magazine. As of Friday, fewer than 500 people in the U.S. had been tested, according to the CDC.

The CDC ignored World Health Organization testing guidelines to devise its own test. But several testing kits sent to states had inconclusive results, so most states had to rely on CDC analysis, creating a backlog, ProPublica reported.

“We’re weeks behind because we had this problem,” Scott Becker, chief executive officer of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, told ProPublica. “We’re usually up-front and center and ready.”

The CDC until recently also restricted use of the kits to suspected cases of COVID-19 among people who had traveled to China within two weeks of developing symptoms or who had been in close contact with someone with the illness.

But Trump, wearing his 'Keep America Great' campaign hat while discussing the global worry, repeatedly detoured from his message of reassurance.
'It's an unforeseen problem,' Trump said of the virus. 'It came out of nowhere. We're taking care of it.'
The president, while touring the CDC, talked up his ability to understand the virus, although he has repeatedly misstated how long it would take for a vaccine to be developed and available.
'I like this stuff. I really get it,' Trump said. 'People are surprised that I understand it. ... Maybe I have a natural ability.'
He also suggested the accuracy of the coronavirus test was 'perfect - like the letter was perfect.'
With that, Trump was making a comparison to the July phone call with Ukraine's president that led to his impeachment. Trump, who was acquitted by the Senate last month, has insisted he did nothing wrong.
Before departing Washington, Trump signed an $8.3 billion coronavirus response funding bill at the White House and instructed the public: 'Be calm. It will go away.'
'We have very low numbers compared to major countries throughout the world. Our numbers are lower than just about
anybody,' Trump said about cases of the virus.

the panic is coming because of the race(s) of the people getting infected and dying.

I disagree with how he's handling this but pretending any of our leaders, past or present, would do better when the source of the outbreak was NEVER truthful about the situation is a joke.

How many of his most vocal media critics do you think have self-quarantined and are avoiding public spaces like the experts they're using to point out his failures are recommending?

As recently as a week ago some of these same pompous asses agreed with him and said it was "just the flu".
