Deadly Coachella, CA. Crash I-10 Accident Caught On Camera
July 11, 2025

A terrifying, deadly accident was caught on camera in California. A white tractor trailer could be seen traveling in the slow, right hand lane. All of a sudden, it veered left. It crossed several lanes of traffic while rolling onto its side. The truck plowed through a guardrail in the median strip, and right into the opposite lane. Some cars in that eastbound lane were unable to stop in time, and hit the overturned truck.

New rules to remove safety devices from semi-trucks could let them zoom down the nation’s highways at top-speed

Joe Sommerlad
June 30, 2025

The U.S. Department of Transportation has scrapped a rule mandating speed-limiting devices on heavy-duty trucks, allowing them to race along the nation’s highways at top speed.

The devices in question, also known as governors, place a limit on the maximum speed at which large trucks can travel by preventing their engines from running any faster than a preset number of revolutions per minute. This typically means they cannot go faster than 55 to 70mph in the interest of safety and improving fuel efficiency.

But their requirement is now being dropped as part of a new DOT package intended to ease conditions for long-haul truckers. It also includes a $275m investment in expanding truck parking spaces and simplifying the wording of federal regulations...

More than 130 union truck drivers and mechanics in Tolleson are expected to lose their jobs by the end of August after grocery giant Kroger terminated its contract with a third-party transportation provider.

For decades, the Tolleson distribution center has kept shelves stocked for every Fry’s food store in Arizona. The drivers and mechanics—represented by Teamsters Local 104—work for Ruan Transportation, a company contracted to handle deliveries and vehicle maintenance for Kroger-owned Fry’s and Smith’s stores...

July 23, 2025

130 truck drivers and mechanics will lose their jobs by the end of the summer after failed Teamsters negotiations with Kroger led to a cancelled contract.

Vice President of of Teamsters Local 104, Josh Graves, says that the Teamsters had a contract with Ruan Transport Corporation, which contracted with Kroger to hire truck drivers and diesel mechanics at the Kroger warehouse in Tolleson, Arizona. A three year contract between Ruan and Kroger was signed in 2023, which included a clause allowing Kroger to exit the contract with a 90 day notice, reported AZ Central.

In July, the Teamsters union was notified that Kroger had chosen to cancel the contract with Ruan and will soon be working with Swift instead. The last day of employment for truck drivers and mechanics contracted through Ruan will be August 27th. The Teamsters and Ruan have since offered concessions to Kroger in an attempt to keep the contract, but their offers were not accepted.

The WARN notice filed by Ruan lists a total of 144 that will soon lose their jobs. Arizona Senator, Ruben Gallago, sent a letter on July 22nd, urging Kroger executives to reconsider the decision he says was sparked by failed Teamsters negotiations…

FMCSA removes two ELDs from list of approved devices, truck drivers should revert to paper logs

CDLLife
July 31, 2025

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) removed two Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) from the agency’s list of approved devices.

On July 31, 2025, FMCSA announced that the following two ELDs have been revoked for failure to meet minimum standards:

WALKER ELD

Model Number: WAL-R
ELD Identifier: WLK790
ELD Provider: Walker ELD System INC

SR ELD

Model Number: SR-E
ELD Identifier: SRE288
ELD Provider: SR ELD LLC

FMCSA advises carriers using these ELDs to take the following steps:

Discontinue using the revoked ELDs and revert to paper logs or logging software to record required hours of service data.

Replace the revoked ELDs with compliant ELDs from the Registered Devices list before September 29, 2025.

Carriers using these devices have 60 days to replace them with FMCSA-compliant ELDs. During that time, law enforcement and safety personnel are encouraged not to cite truck drivers for 95.8(a)(1) – “No record of duty status” or 395.22(a) – “Failing to use a registered ELD.” Instead, law enforcement should request the driver’s paper logs, logging software, or use the ELD display as a back-up method to review the driver’s hours-of-service information.

Starting September 29, 2025, motor carriers who continue to use the revoked devices listed above will be considered as operating without an ELD, and safety personnel should cite the driver 395.8(a)(1), and place the driver out-of-service.

“If the ELD provider corrects all identified deficiencies for its device, FMCSA will place the ELD back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry of the update. However, FMCSA strongly encourages motor carriers to take the actions listed above now to avoid compliance issues in the event that the deficiencies are not addressed by the ELD provider,” the agency said.

CVSA calls for a maximum limit on use of personal conveyance by truck drivers

The CVSA’s comments touched on a variety of trucking topics, including universal electronic vehicle identifiers for commercial vehicles, automated trucks, and ELD certification standards.

…“Opportunities for driver fatigue can be reduced by clarifying the definition of personal conveyance within the FMCSRs by adding a maximum time for its use. Under personal conveyance, a driver is able to use a loaded or unloaded CMV for personal use and count that driving time as off-duty time. With the current definition of personal conveyance, a driver can drive hundreds of miles over the course of several hours under the designation of personal conveyance before, during, or after their workday, putting them at risk for increased levels of fatigue,” the CVSA said…

Nationwide CDL freeze leaves thousands of immigrant truckers without work

by Samantha Hoffman & Liv Kelleher, KUTV
October 10th 2025

A new emergency action plan by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation has temporarily paused the issuance and renewal of commercial driver's licenses across the country.

States must now audit their licensing systems, which have left many legal non-citizens unsure if they can keep working.

“I got to keep driving down these roads of a country that doesn't really want me here,” said Jorge Rivera, a truck driver from Enoch.

Rivera is one of roughly 580,000 people across the country under DACA, a federal program that allows immigrants brought to the United States as children to live and work legally. His parents moved to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 2 years old.

DACA, or "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals," isn't an immigration status but rather a temporary protection from deportation that allows work authorization but does not create a pathway to citizenship.

Recipients must renew every two years and can lose eligibility if convicted of misdemeanors or greater crimes, according to federal rules, said immigration attorney Carlos Trujillo...

The majority of current non-domiciled CDL-holders possessed an EAD.

“Although these individuals may be eligible for employment in the United States, they would not be eligible to apply for a non-domiciled commercial learner’s permit or CDL,” the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wrote in the notice...

Truckers tell Congress to take ‘aggressive action’ to keep unsafe, under-trained drivers from getting behind the wheel

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is calling on lawmakers to protect the trucking industry by strengthening driver training and licensing standards.

CDL Life
October 21, 2025

In an October 20, 2025, letter to congressional transportation leadership, OOIDA President & CEO Todd Spencer urged committee leaders to shape Highway Bill Reauthorization legislation to support the trucking industry by ensuring that only safe and properly trained truck drivers are allowed behind the wheel.

OOIDA specifically called on Congress to support H.R. 5688, the Non-Domiciled CDL Integrity Act and to reject H.R. 5563, the DRIVE-Safe Act.

“The trucking industry has suffered from an overcapacity of truck drivers, which has helped drive the longest running freight recession in decades. To be clear, there is no “driver shortage” in trucking. Instead, there is tremendous driver turnover as under-trained drivers are put into a new job they are unprepared for.

Congress should reject legislation, such as H.R. 5563, the DRIVE-Safe Act, that would exacerbate driver turnover by placing younger drivers in these same exact challenging and unappealing positions. Like relaxed enforcement of English language proficiency requirements and the recent explosion of non-domiciled CDLs being issued by states, policies like the DRIVE-Safe Act are said to be addressing a “driver shortage” that never existed.

In reality, those supporting these policies simply want to maintain a steady flow of cheap labor. Rather than making it easier for unsafe drivers to enter our industry, Congress should take aggressive action that will strengthen training, licensing, and qualification protocols for commercial truck drivers,” Spencer wrote…

Feds Pump the Brakes on Autonomous Trucks

Eric Boehm
October 19, 2025

On a lonely stretch of Texas interstate between Dallas and Houston, the possible future of freight transportation is already rumbling down the road. But whether autonomous trucking becomes commonplace might depend on federal regulations that govern stationary trucks, rather than those that are on the move.

Aurora Innovation Inc. became the first company to put heavy-duty commercial self-driving trucks on public roads when it launched its Dallas-to-Houston route in May. The company hopes to expand its routes to El Paso, Texas, and Phoenix by the end of the year. Aurora claims that its self-driving system can see objects that are as far as three football fields up the road, even if there are other cars in the way and even in the pitch black of a rural Texas night.

Inside the cab of an autonomous truck; Aurora

Autonomous trucking could help lower shipping costs and ease the shortage of long-haul truck drivers. Unlike human drivers, who are required to take a 10-hour break for every 14 hours on the road (during which they can drive only for a maximum of 11 hours), Aurora's trucks can move goods around the clock.

An obscure federal rule is slowing the self-driving revolution. When trucks break down, operators are required to place reflective warning cones and road flares around the truck to warn other motorists. The regulations are exacting: Within 10 minutes of stopping, three warning signals must be set in specific locations around the truck.

Accident20Investigation20SItuational20Photo.jpg

Aurora asked the federal Department of Transportation (DOT) to allow warning beacons to be fixed to the truck itself—and activated when a truck becomes disabled. The warning beacons would face both forward and backward, would be more visible than cones (particularly at night), and wouldn't burn out like road flares. Drivers of nonautonomous vehicles could also benefit from that rule change, as they would no longer have to walk into traffic to place the required safety signals.

In December 2024, however, the DOT denied Aurora's request for an exemption to the existing rules, even though regulators admitted in the Federal Register that no evidence indicated the truck-mounted beacons would be less safe. Such a study is now underway, but it's unclear how long it will take to draw any conclusions.

Both the courts and Congress have a chance to speed things along. In January, Aurora filed a lawsuit in federal court that seeks to overturn the DOT's denial of its exemption request. The complaint calls the decision "arbitrary, capricious," and an abuse of federal regulators' discretion.

Meanwhile, Rep. Vince Fong (R–Calif.) has introduced a bill to allow truck-mounted warning beacons as "a permissible warning device," among other changes meant to get more autonomous trucks on the road. Autonomous trucking's expansion shouldn't be stifled by federal regulators' reluctance to embrace innovations in road safety.
