TOO MANY students run from the "hard" classes ... Neil deGrasse Tyson on Calculus

Calculus was easy. Now that fucking trigonometry in 7th, shiiiiit bad fucking idea. Linear Algebra was a problem for me big time and oddly fucking C+. I had to take that shit twice almost broke me. I am a ChemE, so fuck programming  and don't judge me.

i almost did not get into med school
cause i failed physics by one point

physics that i have never seen again since i begged the prof to give me an extra point

my whole life would have been different if not for the kindness of that man

why was i forced to take such a hard subject for absolutely no reason
smh
How far along are you?

Bro Geometry and Trig were easy as fuck for me, but for some reason, I would always fuck up the formulas in Algebra 2. I promised myself I would take Calculous and Math Analysis before I kick the bucket. Any advice for an old man learning new tricks?

How much time you willing to put in? Lol.

Ultimately, that’s what it boils down to. There will be some topics you’ll breeze through and their will be others that feel like you’re fighting Tyson...multiple times.

It’s the Tyson fights where practicing and patience comes into play. I always told my students,’if you ain’t dreaming about math when you sleep, then you ain’t down enough of it.

Linear Algebra is a bitch!

I wish I could redo that one with what I know now.

So, I'm gonna push back a little regarding this. We have to stop shaming people for going back and getting degrees. It's better he is doing rather than not do it at all.

I'm actually working on a grant proposal regarding funding that helps non-traditional students navigate higher education. I do this now on a small scale. But, I would like to have quarterly cohorts of people who want to use education as a means to change their lives.

Now, to your point, he needs to realize that majoring in film is basically pissing his money away.

Its not shaming as much as its a reality. In America for the most part if you can sign your name on a loan you are not only able to get funds for school, but you are damn near forced on it. The time from finishing High school to 32 is 14 years. That is 7 Associate degrees, 3.5 120 credit bachelor degrees. Thats the world we live in now. Black men dont get a chance to not hit the ground running. Whites and the immigrants on H1B dont allow for it.

Pay his ass no mind. He knew that shit he said was stupid when he typed it.
^^^Old ass nigga getting a degree.

When I took it in college on average students were expected to drop it at least three times before eventually passing it. My first teacher was a Cuban I disliked that bitch. I believe it has more to do with bad teachers than bad students. If that many students have to drop a course than your teaching sucks.

:smh: Damn. You got lucky with that one. Some academics ain't shit man. It's like they put the shit together with no fucking regard of turning out professionals.

As for the topic at hand, hell yeah they do. Crazy part is folks go to college with high ambitions until those hard classes pop up. Folks then run right to the sociology department.

Some math professors are just dickheads because they can be. Math isn't as hard as some professors make it.

I've excellent teachers that taught thoroughly and were fair. I'm a fair math teacher myself.

I don't punish students for missing a problem on a simple mistake. There is a huge difference between not knowing how to do a problem and missing a problem because of a minor mistake. Most of the time when there is a minor mistake, the student knew how to do the problem.

i took advanced calculus in high school and that shit was mad easy

Same here. My last math class was DE ( Differential Equations). Calculus isn’t hard. All Calculus is just Algerbra 1 & 2 but add Sines, Cosines, Tangents, and a shit load of FOIL.

Most ppl who think Calculus is hard never really understood Algebra or even basic math like understanding when to recognize like-terms. In college, I used to revisit a lot of basic math and algebra to keep myself fresh.

Geometry was harder to understand than Trig(Pre-Cal) & Calculus, but like all learning it comes down to the proactiveness of the student to learn and a teacher to be able to teach.

Damn i wish you could teach my kid.

There were tears yesterday

The thing is he teaches something in class with one or two digits but then for homework?

3 or 4 digits and word problems

Next day have any questions?

Ok lets move on

Its just too accelerated and again i now its advanced but rushing thru the material isnt a productive

So we went to the school learning specialist

Who spent half the session repeatedly calling the math teacher asking him how the hell did you teach this to this kids what method YOU using?

I had to hire her a private tutor

Yeah just reading that

You and me can't be cool.

I didn't understand sh*t after it isn't hard

What is your daughter working on right now?

What type of topics?

Man, I LOVE DE. I excelled so well in that area and it makes the most real word sense in the science field.

And you're right about Calc. Most of it is algebra. After you take a derivative or an integral, it's all arithmetic and algebra after that.

Prime numbers Fractions dividing fractions decimals using them in real world problems

Jane's present age is 1/5 of her father's age. Her father will be 52 years old in 7 years . In how many years will Jane's age of her father's age?

let me PM you

our school took calculus first then trig. i was in AP in both. You're right, once you understand the positions of numbers and what they interpret, everything else is just solving a riddle with all the tools you need. If you don't understand the tools in your toolset or how to use them....:smh:

Trust me folks, this shit starts young. I was always good at math but wasn't labeled an academically gifted (AG) student (trust me, there is racism with this if you're black growing up in a rural white county). I remember in 6th grade, a teacher gave me an AG math worksheet on mistake and I was doing it with ease. Beyond that, I had great math teachers in high school which one taught mathematics at a college.

In college, I was a Comp Sci major and was offered the potential to double major in math. Differential equations was the only math class where I was ever like "Fuck this shit"

If you got a youngster that good in math, invest everything you can into them to go further.

You know ......
This could be a good YouTube series on Calc tutorials ran by black educators targeted to black kids.
A niche within a niche

I'm someone who is not a math head, but I can learn if I'm not having to keep up with a class full of math heads. I wish I would have pushed myself to go the trig, pre-calc, calc I route in high school and just got a tutor. I just did algebra and trig and did ok, cause after falling behind in 8th grade I got a tutor and got to the point where I was comfortable and decent with algebra. Since I'm not a math head, I let that comfort win.
During my 16 year part time college plan I learned how valuable just doing the problems over and over again in my free time is when stats ended up being my last class for my BS.
Considering doing calc one of these days just to do it, to prove to myself.

When I was in college there was a fledgling internet but there was not much there but dirty pictures, newsgroups and bullshit. Today there is all kinds of help available. Online low cost tutors at places like Preply.com, there are tons of assistance videos at YouTube, TA's in need of side money at the college, and laundry list of other aids. The days of filling every new schedule with Liberal Arts should be over. We need more Black scientists and engineers on the frontiers of discovery.

My nephew got to meet this man. Guy is brilliant. Motivated to tackle this stat class now. Appreciate the uplifting my brothas and sistas. Please keep it up.

Wow had no idea we got bIack drs on this board. I love this board. We truly have it all here.

The culture looks at this kind of study as some abstract subject to just pass because it part of the course study. It been numerous times that people have stated how this courses are a waste of time. Bloomberg was an engineer and now he is worth billions. People have to see the connection in these subjects to their real lives. JMO

You hit the nail on the head about derivatives and integrals. DE and the Electromagnetic Formula go hand in hand. I thought about switching to be a Physics or Math major after that class bc everything starting clicking mentally when I took it.

Yea, a good teacher who has a lesson plan that focuses on the methods of problem solving is better than the accelerated. I was in these classes and was fortunate I had teachers who gave actually cared if the students learned and taught methods mainly. The accelerated method is tough bc the teacher never take the time to give tips for kids to deal with multiple digit numbers or crazy big formulas. This can lower a student’s confidence and as a result students tend to not be interested in the subject. Those tips make the biggest difference in the world. I will admit it can take time to understand, i used to be in a rush trying to get to the answer that I would sometimes forget stuff like “order of operations”. But when I took my time I understood stuff better, and as I practiced more I got faster at solving equations.

Your little one will be good. That tutor will help a lot bc tutors help get in the student’s methodology of thinking.

about 15 years since then
never had to use physics or anything harder than basic math once
Lol! Right. Regarding the med school path in general, once you are on the other side, you also see how much other BS was taught and pushed on to students.

One big one that I tell students all the time is that pre-med and medical students care more about MD, DO, caribbean than the patients do. And that hospitals do not care at all. At hospitals, all we care about is did you pass your boards and are you currently available to practice. Lol!!!

Math just take a lot of practice, because at the collegiate level nothing really changes.
