Thoughts? Justin Timberlake BLASTED For Tweeting About Jesse Williams 2016 BET Awards Speech

to the haters on black twitter

peace

but shouldn't we proud he DID it?

cause ok lets say they all have been saying it for years..

but where?

twitter? facebook?

and got a few likes?

he did it in front of the world...

and NOT only on BET

but MTV and Nickelodeon...

and for all the YEARS the BET Awards have existed how come no one ELSE said anything close to what he said?

We got to stop attacking the messenger

ESPECIALLY in this case cause he aint new...

he BEEN doing this LOUDLY and PUBLICLY for YEARS too.

with a LOT more to lose then most of the twitter folk.

Why don't they attack those who NEED to be attacked instead?

I aint talking Timberlake either.

cause behavior like this?

Aint exactly ENCOURAGING anyone else with some fame and stature to EVER speak like this publicly again.

Jesse Williams on How He Plans to Approach 2017 and His BET Speech

Last year was chock-full of memorable speeches, including actor and activist Jesse Williams's remarks at the BET Awards in June. In accepting the Humanitarian Award, Williams gave a stirring speech about black lives. In an interview with NPR’s All Things Considered on December 31, he talked about that speech and his plans for the new year. Here are some highlights.

Williams says his BET speech was an opportunity to address the issues at hand.

"You know, I wasn't winning an acting or music award, I was being awarded — or being acknowledged, I prefer to say — for work being done in the space of human rights and civil rights and general public consciousness ... I felt the energy in the room and kind of surfed it."

He explained that he didn’t anticipate or care about the reaction.

"I don't want to be on the cover of your magazine. I don't want to turn into a celebrity for that reason. I wanted to let the words simmer. I wanted people to spend some time trying to figure — like a novel or something — what does it mean to you? What do those words mean to you?

Later, he talked about turning a wider eye to his creative endeavors this year.

"One of the real reasons I got into storytelling to begin with is that for so many people, narrative storytelling, also documentary, is news. It is the lens to the outside world; outside world meaning any world that you don't otherwise touch or feel physically.

So really kind of looking back into the archives of terrific storytelling and collaborating with great people to make things that can also supplement us having real-deal political discourse on its face. You can be really subversive and impactful. So I'm going to be really focusing and spending a little bit more attention on that as well as [being] politically active."

(AllHipHop News) Back in 2016, Justin Timberlake found himself on the wrong side of Twitter detractors. Actor/activist Jesse Williams gave a passionate BET Awards speech about dismantling the idea of white supremacy, and Timberlake responded to Williams' message by tweeting “inspired.”" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline; touch-action: manipulation;">tweeting “inspired.”

A Twitter user then called out JT for what he perceived as years of cultural appropriation conducted by the Tennessee native. The ex-Boy Bander countered his critic by posting, “Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation.”

That “tone-def” reaction led to even more backlash which forced Timberlake to apologize" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline; touch-action: manipulation;">Timberlake to apologize. Apparently, the Super Bowl LII halftime performer is still reflecting on his Summer 16 tweet and the aftermath.

Beats 1 Radio’s Zane Lowe asked JT if his “Say Something” record with Chris Stapleton was a reflection on well-intentioned statements getting taken the wrong way. Timberlake admitted he and Stapleton wrote that song almost a year ago in the midst of “weird things” taking place in the world.

“I said I want to speak up and I want to say something but I just don't want to get caught in the rhythm of something because if the rhythm goes off, the train goes off the tracks. And [Stapleton] was just like, 'ok I'll be right back,'” recalled the Man of the Woods album creator. “And [Stapleton] wrote those two lines down and then he sort of took a second to himself. I think maybe with the notoriety that has come his way in recent years, because he's penned so many songs for so many artists on that side of the fence and now to be a solo artist, I think he's starting to see that you can be in the middle of a storm of confusion.”

Later, Lowe directly brought up celebrities communicating through social media in general and specifically Justin's Twitter exchange about Williams’ speech. Timberlake replied, “And you feel terrible, like, ‘oh man, that is not what I meant. Why did I do that?’ You realize too, that patience really is a virtue. You have to learn that… So it can be very confusing. I feel like that song is about that moment.”

Justin Timberlake has found himself in a Notes App Apology situation. Near the end of last month, the man of the woods was spotted in New Orleans — where he is currently filming a movie called Palmer — getting a tad handsy with a costar while seeming to be visibly intoxicated. Photos were published by The Sun, and while nothing overtly sexual is going on, it of course is a bad look for a married man and fueled all manner of speculation about the entertainer’s behavior when he’s away from home. Timberlake and other cast members were reportedly out at a bar together, and based on a “source” who spoke with Us Weekly, “Nothing remotely romantic is going on with Justin and Alisha [Wainwright]. The whole cast is shooting out there and like to hang out together. They were very much in public and nothing inappropriate was happening.” Timberlake has not commented on the situation until now, but the chatter has apparently gotten loud enough that he wants to insist publicly that he is not some kind of cheating bastard.

Michael Arkinson, the Sag Harbor Police Department officer who arrested Justin Timberlake on suspicion of driving while intoxicated last summer, has been awarded for his work.

The cop was named officer of the year by Chief Rob Drake in a recent ceremony, per TMZ, for making “an immediate impact within the department and the community.”

Timberlake’s DWI case began June 17, 2024 after police reported witnessing him “failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign and failing to maintain his lane of travel” while operating in Sag Harbor. Arkinson noted in a court filing that “the defendant was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”

The Grammy winner had also reportedly told Arkinson during the arrest, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home.” Timberlake’s lawyer also argued that his client wasn’t drunk at all during the arrest.

In September, Timberlake moved forward with a plea deal after previously pleading not guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge. After pleading guilty in New York’s Sag Harbor Village Court, according to the Associated Press, Timberlake was sentenced to a $500 fine with a $260 surcharge as well as 25 hours of community service at a nonprofit of his choosing.
