This isn't anything new. At least 9 states have discussed, introduced legislation, or implemented a pay per mile tax. Others have increased the yearly registration fee so that electric cars pay the average of what gas cars do, and others charge a tax for using public charging stations.

I don't live in CA, but road related taxes are supposed to pay for infrastructure upkeep and environmental repairs.
From the outside, this just looks like some greed shit.
It also looks like they lied about the impacts of what going green would be if they still need to collect taxes. The truth is, they tack on all of these other levies and attach the method of payment to things like owning a home, the roads, etc.
They are running out of funds to support their other bullshit, so they need to find new ways to tax CA residents.
And YES, this is the kind of shit that makes liberals lose ground in elections.

Agreed. I just glanced over it. Replacing taxes is tricky, too. There has to be some form of taxation for infrastructure. The extra levies and such are always up for debate.
