Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed how people's mentality about obesity (being fat) has changed over the years.
Let's start with a brief understanding of my experiences. I am only 25, but my life experience is credible and useful in this argument. As a child, kids were ridiculed for being fat. Most of the women, including black women, were not accepted for being overweight. In short, being fat was not cool.
Within the past 10 years, I have seen a dramatic change in our mindset about obesity. Here are some examples of the changes:
Language- We have replaced the word "fat" with "thick", "curvy", "voluptuous" and "full figured." By changing our vocabulary to use words with a more positive connotation, we are accepting obesity.
Food portions- We didn't need to watch "Super Size Me" to understand that food portions are significantly larger. Since when is a 32 oz drink a medium?!?
Media- Fad diets have always existed, but the media attention associated with the fads is magnified by the growth of cable news and ADD inducing 5 second stories. I don't blame the media, I blame those who misinterpret the stories.
In this thread I am focusing on "Ethnic Pseudo-culture." Why are accepting obesity as a positive part of our culture? Ethnic women are rewarded for being larger than their white counterparts. In a nation where everyone is getting bigger, we should not be supporting or encouraging our women to continue down this dark path.
I understand that people ask for acceptance, but we should put limits on what we accept. Would you want your culture represented by drug dealers, pimps, rapists, and addicts? These images are imposed on members of the ethnic minority on a regular basis. Why would we add obesity to the mix?
Why do I feel that obesity is a vice? Although I am not a religious man, obesity is caused by two moral sins: sloth and gluttony. I have a biology and medical background and our medical knowledge supports this claim. Most people are not victims of a genetic defect that causes obesity. Even if members in your family are fat, it is more than likely a consequence of habit rather than genes.
More importantly the health effects of obesity are killing us. Overweight and obese people are at risk for developing heart disease, chronic kidney failure, and diabetes to name a few. How many of our talented and influential leaders have to die in order to understand this problem? Its ridiculous to watch "Mo' nique" prance around on stage with other overweight women, and applaud her. Would we applaud Steve Harvey if he went on stage and smoked 2 packs of Newports, with a crowd of college aged men? I don't think so. I understand that is a distant comparison, but both would be a exhibition of unhealthy behaviors. Even if you argue that Mo'Nique's dancing is physical activity, it doesn't take away from the fact that they are overweight and unhealthy.
Let's move forward and improve not just our image, but our lives. We can't change the world if we are in the grave. I'm not blasting people, but you shouldn't lie to yourself. Wearing plus size clothes and designer fashions does not make you beautiful, it only masks the unhealthy body underneath. Our culture is not dysfunctional, and we should to accept obesity.
