I think JR's style doesn't mesh well with modern wrestling period. Everything today is more fast paced, spotfest driven. JR comes from a time when things were slowed down and methodical. Ring psychology was emphasized more which in turn allowed you as a commentator time to craft a interesting story. Nowdays the action goes at 100 mph and JR simply can't keep up. This is where Excalibur picks up the slack. He knows the moves and how to keep up with the flow of the match. I like Callis because he's great at color commentary. His commentary work for New Japan was excellent.

With that said Tony will probably keep JR around because although he sucks at commentary he does have a wealth of wrestling knowledge.

LOL. Listening to JR talk about a winner's purse in 2022.

I'm a Homer for Memphis Mid South wrestling. I was fan of all that came through. Jimmy Hart kept a rotation of mufuccas in his First Family faction the came in an fought the hometown hero Jerry Lawler. I would say Jerry is my favorite because he made most of the big time wrestlers famous But never held A WWE title.
Most Def....Lawler, Dundee, Idol, Toyo(spellin) and Koko(pre bird)...Tag Team Steve Kiern and Stan Lane....

You just described everything that's WRONG with today's modern wrestling.

I do agree JR needs to hang 'em up and retire. JR does have wrestling knowledge, but it's clear most at AEW don't wanna hear what he has to say.
JR has openly complained about the product at times. JR was sold on a "sports-based" wrestling promotion.
Other than the wrestlers having win-loss records there's been nothing sports-based about AEW.

It's in Vince's/WWE best interest to treat Cody well if they have any desire to hire AEW talent in the future. Jade, Wardlow, MJF(don't see him on their radar), Darby(purely as a fan favorite asset) could all be money makers for WWE.

Jade's already been through WWE's developmental and stated she has no desire to work there.
Wardlow perhaps could work in WWE, he just needs to get a lot better in the ring.
MJF's act wouldn't work in WWE's PG world. He would be a watered down version of himself there.
Darby maybe as a Jeff Hardy type replacement.

I am skeptical on if Vince will do right by Cody long term. But it’s best for the wrestling business and talent if talent could move from AEW to WWE.

i wouldn’t be surprised if Mox, Jericho or DB return at some point. By all accounts the WWE is interested in Wardlow and MJF (not sure if he big enough for Vince and written PG promos would neuter him).

But never thought Cody, who jump started this wrestling‘revolution’, was evp at AEW, the mainstream face and took shots at WWE whenever possible, would be the 1st to make the jump

LOL, my God these Meltzer awards are so predictable every year it's laughable at this point

I am skeptical on if Vince will do right by Cody long term. But it’s best for the wrestling business and talent if talent could move from AEW to WWE.

I doubt Mox goes back based on stuff from his book. Jericho has served his purpose on helping AEW with name recognition. Daniel Bryan seems like he's just happy to wrestle.

I don't know if it's necessarily wrong I just think things evolve. I'll be the first to tell you I love old school NWA/All Japan heavy psychology based Wrestling but realistically producing a whole show with that style wouldn't work today. For example as much as Rebel and Jamie Hayter cheat/interfere for Britt Baker in her matches why wouldn't they be permanently barred from ringside by the Refs. That's the type of stuff that irks me.

I think the sports based approach was their intentions at first but then they realized it wasn't going to work for a weekly tv show. TK said a lot of things in the beginning but didn't really have any experience running a TV show.
The old-school approach to wrestling pulled in WAY more viewers back in the day than it is now.
Wrestling viewership is at its lowest across the board right now.
It would have been laughable in the 90s that a million viewers (sometimes less) on the top wrestling show each week would be deemed a success.

The referees in AEW are bad because they're instructed to be bad. The tag teams can't get all their cool double-team moves in if the referees are being particular about little things like RULES.

Pretty much all of them that show obvious bias towards AEW (and anything from Japan) and shit on anything WWE.

I'm confused. There is pretty much is a general consensus in the wrestling world that WWE programming sucks yet when awards state the obvious they are labed as bias. Here's a thought perhaps AEW and New Japan just produce better wrestling shows. No it can't be that it has to be because they're being bias.

Rampage, really is the 2nd best show on TV???

I don't know about it being the second best show but it sure as hell more enjoyable than Raw and SmackDown.

Here goes Tony again hot-shoting and selling wolf tickets again. Is this the strategy to pull in a million viewers each week?

It's only considered wolf tickets if you don't deliver. He delivered CM Punk. He delivered Bryan Danielson. He delivered Adam Cole. I guess this should've never happened right.

The old-school approach to wrestling pulled in WAY more viewers back in the day than it is now.

If we"re talking 80's only WWE had more viewers. NWA, AWA, WCCW never had the viewership AEW has.

Wrestling viewership is at its lowest across the board right now.

That's because kayfabe is dead. Once you learn all the secrets behind the tricks of the magician a vasy amount of people will stop watching. There's a reason why magic isn't as popular today as it was back in the 80's/90's.

It would have been laughable in the 90s that a million viewers (sometimes less) on the top wrestling show each week would be deemed a success.

The 90's was all about Vince Russo Jerry Springer like entertainment. None of those shows of the attitude era were based on the concepts of old School psychology based wrestling. Lol, don't kid yourself. There's a reason why Jim Cornette hates Russo's guts.

The referees in AEW are bad because they're instructed to be bad. The tag teams can't get all their cool double-team moves in if the referees are being particular about little things like RULES.

I agree and that needs to change.

Right now, I'll take Smackdown over Rampage, which just appears to be a filler show right now on Friday nights as evidenced by the ratings.
These Meltzer awards make it seem like EVERYTHING on AEW is just awesome and EVERYTHING on WWE is terrible.

The "big surprise" last time was some guy most people have never heard of and everyone knew Keith Lee was coming so it wasn't a big surprise.
I'm sure this new tease by TK will be some Japanese or indy guy only the hardcores know.

It gets bad ratings because it's in a horrible time slot on Friday nights. Smackdown is on free TV in a prime time slot.

These Meltzer awards make it seem like EVERYTHING on AEW is just awesome and EVERYTHING on WWE is terrible.

To the wrestling fan that pays attention to both promotions you know that's not true. Everything on AEW is NOT awesome just as everything on WWE is NOT terrible. Usually when I have time to review Dynamite I generally tell you the good and the bad of that show. In regard to match quality AEW is killing it. Can you honestly tell me with a straight face a WWE match in 2021 that was better than Omega/Danielson or Lucha Brothers/Young Bucks.

The "big surprise" last time was some guy most people have never heard of

Most of the people who didn't know who Jay White was were WWE marks.

and everyone knew Keith Lee was coming so it wasn't a big surprise.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a surprise you just have to deliver on bringing in the talent. When the news came out that AEW was signing CM Punk everybody knew beforehand it was going to happen. When Punk came out people popped because TK delivered.

I'm sure this new tease by TK will be some Japanese or indy guy only the hardcores know.

All you got to do is look at the news reports. Jeff Hardy is out there. Steve Strickland is out there. Windham Rotunda is out there. The Briscoes are out there. There's several directions TK can go with this.

All you got to do is look at the news reports. Jeff Hardy is out there. Steve Strickland is out there. Windham Rotunda is out there. The Briscoes are out there. There's several directions TK can go with this.
Don't know who Steve Strickland is.

The Briscoes I know a little bit about. Their gimmick seems to be that they're kinda trailer park trash that can wrestle.
Not sure how far that can go on a national level.

I'm not sold yet that Bray Wyatt (or whatever name he's gonna go under) is this genius mind that was booked poorly by WWE and held back.
We'll see what he can do outside of WWE. Weren't people saying the same thing about Matt Hardy when he left WWE for AEW?

I feel like we've seen the Hardy Boyz reunion a million times already. It gets a pop when it first happens and then eventually fizzles over time.
Won't be any different in AEW.

Here's the interview TK did on "Busted Open" this morning. Now that I've heard the audio I'm starting to think that the"massive" thing that Tony is working on may not be a signing at all. He says it may not be what anybody expects it to be so that may rule out a new signing unless he pulled off The Rock and we know that's not happening. My guess would be perhaps a Supershow between AEW, NJPW, NWA, MLW, AAA, etc and he ran it up against WrestleMania. Now that would be massive and a big deal In wrestling. If it turns out that he pulled that off. WOW!

I'm confused. There is pretty much is a general consensus in the wrestling world that WWE programming sucks yet when awards state the obvious they are labed as bias. Here's a thought perhaps AEW and New Japan just produce better wrestling shows. No it can't be that it has to be because they're being bias.

I don't know about it being the second best show but it sure as hell more enjoyable than Raw and SmackDown.

Because it's not biased towards WWE because they have the most exposure and the highest profits, then it's just gotta be biased against WWE

Profits and that ratings margin are literally the only two good things WWE has going for itself and that's what WWE marks are going to continue to hold on to.

But the truth is - ratings and profits do not equate to having the best wrestling product or the best wrestlers - only the best business.

And this list is not about the best business - not most viewed clips on Youtube, the most ad revenue, the biggest profit margins, etc. It's the best wrestler or the best wrestling based on an individual body of work.

And I'm not surprised he did not answer your question because there are no good answers.

There's not a better WWE tag team than the Bucks or Lucha Bros, or a better WWE match than Bucks/Lucha Bros. Roman is all gimmick and 7 moves. And Raw and SD have so much copy and paste that it defeats the purpose of watching them every week.

The way some AEW marks defend their favorite promotion reminds me of politics.

AEW stans are like Ultra Far Left Liberal CACs who accept fuck shit because it's not tied to Conservative beliefs.

Nothing AEW does can be percieved as fuck shit so long as WWE (the far right) exists.

Don't know who Steve Strickland is.

Excuse me I meant to say Shane Strickland. He wrestled in the defunct "Lucha Underground" promotion under the name "Killshot". I don't know if you ever watched "Lucha Underground" but it was a great storytelling driven show that featured some great in-ring wrestling. In NXT he used the name Isaiah "Swerve" Scott and was the NXT North American Champion. He was the leader of the faction "Hit Row" . He was released from his NXT contract November 18th of last year.

The Briscoes I know a little bit about. Their gimmick seems to be that they're kinda trailer park trash that can wrestle.

They're basically an updated version of the Sheep Herders/Bush Wackers except they're better at promos and wrestling.

I'm actually against them bringing in Rotunda. I always thought he was overrated in WWE. He was good with coming up with gimmicks but his actual matches we're average. I couldn't name you one amazing match that Bray Wyatt ever had.

Weren't people saying the same thing about Matt Hardy when he left WWE for AEW?

I'm not really interested in Jeff Hardy either. Honestly, Matt Hardy is one of the bad parts about AEW right now. All his matches/segments are boring to me.

:lol:That's funny I feel WWE stans do the same thing. You tell them that their programming is trash and needs to be fixed and they're quick to throw up how much money WWE made in 2021. The double edged sword cuts both ways.

I don't disagree. Absolutely, both do it.

However AEW stans are far more forgiving than WWE stans.

Remember, AEW stans are smart marks. WWEs are more casual fans.

AEW stans should know better but just cannot admit when AEW does fuck shit.

WWE fans are far less vocal in their defense of WWE than AEW stans are with their criticism of WWE.
