One reason Trump supporters believe his lies comes from a basic fact about the brain: it takes more mental effort to reject an idea as false than to accept it as true. In other words, it’s easier to believe than to not.

This fact is based on a landmark study published in the journal PLOS ONE in 2009, which asked the simple question, how is the brain activated differently during a state of belief compared to a state of disbelief? To test this, participants were asked whether or not they believed in a series of statements while their brain activity was being imaged by an fMRI scanner. Some sentences were simple and fact-based (California is larger than Rhode Island), while others were more abstract and subjective (God probably does not exist). The results showed the activation of distinct but often overlapping brain areas in the belief and disbelief conditions. While these imaging results are complicated to interpret, the electrical patterns also showed something that was fairly straightforward. Overall, there was greater brain activation that persisted for longer during states of disbelief. Greater brain activation requires more cognitive resources, of which there is a limited supply. What these findings show is that the mental process of believing is simply less work for the brain, and therefore often favored. The default state of the human brain is to accept what we are told, because doubt takes effort. Belief, on the other hand, comes easily.

This troubling finding makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. If children questioned every single fact they were being taught, learning would occur at a rate so slow that it would be a hindrance. But this fact could be just as easily applied to both the political left and right. So how does it explain why conservatives, specifically evangelicals, are so easily duped by Donald Trump?

For Christian fundamentalists, being taught to suppress critical thinking begins at a very early age. It is the combination of the brain’s vulnerability to believing unsupported facts and aggressive indoctrination that create the perfect storm for gullibility. Due to the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to be sculpted by lived experiences, evangelicals literally become hardwired to believe far-fetched statements.

This wiring begins when they are first taught to accept Biblical stories not as metaphors for living life practically and purposefully, but as objective truth. Mystical explanations for natural events train young minds to not demand evidence for beliefs. As a result, the neural pathways that promote healthy skepticism and rational thought are not properly developed. This inevitably leads to a greater susceptibility to lying and gaslighting by manipulative politicians, and greater suggestibility in general.

If we want to combat the brain’s habit of taking the path of least resistance, which has destructive downstream consequences for critical thinking, as a society we must place more value on empirical evidence, and this must be reflected in how we educate our youth. Additionally, we must create an awareness of the fact that for the human mind, believing is more of a reflex than a careful and methodical action.

Today Republicans will take out the constitution, pull their trousers down and wipe their asses with it. Then in their last bit of cultish defiance, they will douse it with gasoline and set it ablaze. I just wish they had done it for a better man than Trump but as old Bill Shakespeare put it to presciently, 'a coward dies a thousand deaths before death finally takes them.'

Trump has committed more felonies than I can count. He conspired with Michael Cohen to defraud the American people by paying hush money to his mistresses. Each payment is a felony and in violation of campaign finance laws that Republicans were quick to try John Edwards for.

Trump has stolen money from a charity he set up for veterans and then lied about it repeatedly.

He lied multiple times when he answered Robert Mueller's questions.

He has used tax payer money to force the FBI to refurbish their building in DC instead of letting them move it to the suburbs because the deal that we made with the demolition company would have competed with Trump's DC hotel across the street costing us hundreds of millions extra.

He sent Air Force planes to land in Scotland at an airport they never use so we would have to buy fuel from them to prop up his golf resort.

He's handed over top secret intelligence to the Russians.

He's made deals with Saudi Arabia to benefit himself and his family without disclosing them.

He has violated the Emoluments Clause practically every single day he has been in office.

He has met with foreign enemies and conducted secret meetings with them without keeping any records of those meetings in violation of the law.

He has intimidated witnesses.

He has obstructed justice on a scale we will never see again to the tune of hundreds of counts.

He has obstructed congress more than any other president ever.

He has directed Steve Mnuchin to break federal law by not giving his tax returns to the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

He has violated every nepotism law we have.

He has fired civil servants whose duty is to protect our National Security in order to hand his children top secret clearances that they could not get through normal protocols.

When Trump said he could shoot somebody in the head in the middle of 5th Avenue, Republicans clapped like seals and agreed with him. The US Senate was before the most deliberative body in the world and now they are the most abominable sycophantic cowards this nation can produce.

From the original conservatives who fought for England during the revolution to the traitors who seceded from the union starting a civil war to the John Birchers trying to destroy the New Deal since it passed, conservatives have actively tried to inflict a mortal wound on our Republic because their ethos is the smaller the government, the better. Unless of course they are trying to impose their religious beliefs on the populace.

When they could not destroy the New Deal because of its fantastical success, they tried a new ploy to saddle our country with the most debt we could incur while blaming the Democrats for their evildoing.

They have steadfastly tried to disenfranchise black people in order to cheat in elections.

They have desperately tried to shore up the antiquated electoral college to keep their Christofascist majority while doing absolutely nothing to restrain our Russian enemies from interfering in our elections on their behalf again.

Trump has actively and corruptly used our tax money to bribe and extort other countries into doing bogus investigations into his political opponents.

In short, Republicans have done everything possible to undermine our democracy and destroy the rule of law under Trump. So I ask you what happens when we win an election? Are they going to take defeat and accept the results of an election when they will today show they care absolutely nothing for the rule of law? Are they going to wipe their asses with the constitution today and then suddenly start honoring our laws when King Trump loses?

We are in a losing war with a very determined enemy who means to throw away our democracy so they can install the fascism from King Trump. I am talking about your friends and family who are too stupid to know the consequences of their vote. Are you going to let them? Is this how this experiment in self-government ends? Because of this two bit crook Trump?

I'll remind you what Oscar Wilde said, "All empires fall, there are no exceptions."

Are you ready to fight? Or are you too comfortable being complacent? Because tomorrow we are going to the monster loose on this country because Republicans are servile to this monster and checks and balances be damned. It's time to get mad, stay mad and punish these evil bastards with all that we have.

Why isn't @MASTERBAKER in here with his 2000 Trump gifs instead of attention whoring with like 30 Trump gif threads? Or better yet.... DOING HIS FUCKING JOB AS "SUPERMODERATOR" AND MERGING HIS THREADS WITH THIS ONGOING TOPIC ?

DONALD TRUMP HAS NOW GRANTED THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT THE POWER TO ABOLISH BARGAINING FOR CIVILIAN UNIONS

In a bold and alarming move, President Donald Trump has given the Department of Defense the power to abolish the collective bargaining rights of its civilian labor unions thereby affecting the rights of the 750,000 workers they represent.

Trump wrote a memo recently, first reported by Government Executive, that gutting the unions would provide “maximum flexibility.”

Trump signed the memo and invoked “national security” granting exemption to the Defense Department, giving all federal workers the right to unionize.

The memo said, “When new missions emerge or existing ones evolve, the Department of Defense requires maximum flexibility to respond to threats to carry out its mission of protecting the American people… Where collective bargaining is incompatible with these organizations’ missions, the Department of Defense should not be forced to sacrifice its national security mission.”

A provision in the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act allows a president to exclude agencies from engaging in collective bargaining with workers in certain circumstances, including those deemed “emergency situations.”

Trump has made his political name on claims of being a champion of the working class but his frequent assault on unions suggests otherwise.

In 2017, a White House memo encouraged “eliminating employee unions” as part of a plan to weaken organized labor and a first look at Trump’s proposed budget for 2021 shows that it would require federal workers to pay more for a cut in retirement benefits.

At this time, Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s response remains unclear, although labor leaders, workers, and various politicians have come out against the declaration.

According to The Washington Post, Everett Kelly, national secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees, said at a legislative conference, “Denying … Defense Department workers the collective bargaining rights guaranteed to them by law since 1962 would be a travesty — and doing it under the guise of ‘national security’ would be a disgrace… This administration will not stop until it takes away all workers’ rights to form and join a union — and we will not stop doing everything we can to prevent that from happening.”
