Method Man did a song with Limp Bizkit which I happened to love because it was on a Premo beat.

The Roots have never gotten their due so I wouldn't blame them if they did sell out.

But D'evils is right, the video is a tad suspect. But again I ain't mad at em.

Fall out boy is shitty group. However is it really accurate to go as far to call them sellouts for working with them?

they didn't sell out, they bought in.

Common doing commercials for the Gap
Talib and Slum doing commercials for Ford
Mos doing damn near everything

I don't see the problem. Would you rather they remain broke and relatively unknown forever just for the sake of being "cool" with the "real hip hop" crowd? I don't blame them.

Suck balls newb!!!! The roots are probably most original rap group around. Not to mention, worth listening to. They play live instruments and do killer shows. Rap ain't always about thsi bullshit "keepin it real" crap. Roots can do what the fuck they want. Where's your video with Clay Aikens?

This shit was funny to me... As for 'selling out', don't be ridiculous. The whole point is to sell your music. Why else would they be in the business. They could do it for the love unsigned at home.

Slum Village in Chevy video=marketing move
Common doing Gap commercial=marketing move
Mos Def and Common acting=career moves
Roots talking that grandiose hip-hop shit and making a video that caters to the current state of trash=selling out

:smh: Utter nonsense.

What "grandiose" hip-hop shit?

They talk about the same shit other rappers talk about. Pussy, money, bragging on their skills, crime, etc. Black Thought just happens to be a better mc than most rappers out nowadays. Just because they are a band people want to label them as "concious"...whatever the fuck that is.:hmm:

Maaaaan they didn't sell out. Its just a damn song that they collaborated with them dudes on. Its call music and I guarantee the roots (as a collective whole) listen to a variety of music genres to began with.

Selling out would be if they switched styles and started doing the "Snap Music trend" or Started acting like fake thugs talking about murderous gun play and openly selling that white for 17.5 or "for the LO" everyday.

Most of your "studio thug" rapper aint selling shit anyway, the only white they seen are the white bags of flour in they mamas kitchen.

I am not even a hard core roots fan but i respect artists that branch off to try something different every now and then regardless if it fails or not.

in agreement with all who counter the original poster's reckless and uneducated post, i find it incredibly difficult for the roots, a group composed of varying brilliance to even remotely stumble or slip & fall into the category of "selling out," especially due to the fact that since surfacing they have done nothing but be instrumental in setting precedents for what quality music is as well as destroying the superficial limits and boundaries plaguing [hip-hop]music.

How do yall feel about this saul William's song about reparations. It's kind of funny becuse saul is talking about white people in the song. I do think some of the stuff has crossed over and sold out like the mos def ad they changed the song so it did not say black people be free... now I think thats kind of fake to change the song just for white people to like it.

All most people do is sit around and wait for someone to do something THEY dont like, then talk about them. FUCK OFF! The Roots are the SHYT! I support them cat 100%
dont talk about somthing you know nothing about. GO cop that lil waye mixtape and leave the hiphop purests alone

The concept of 'selling out' is so fickled. WTF does that term pertain to? The style of the song or the business deal responsible for the song? KRS ONE was said to be selling out when he dropped "Radio" with REM during a popular reign for REM on the pop charts. BUT, everyone celebrated the Nike Ad "Classic" as a return to real Hip-Hop. Huh? That makes NO sense. It doesn't get much more commercial than Nike, but I guess that point is moot, if the song doesn't have overt White appeal. Well, guess what? ALL Hip-Hop of every style has overt White appeal, considering they're the number one consumer. Fuck the dumb shit... get money.

I dont see anything wrong with this video hell Krs one did a song about rocking nikes back in the day but the saul song I think is selling out because he stands for social injustices and then takes money from Nike? Nike has done a lot of fucked up shit to people in so called third world counties.

two words

Public Enemy

are they sell outs cause they have a rock and roll sound, perform with rock and roll bands and are almost staples in skateboarding music?

as long as the content doesnt change and your just making music i say go for it.

man, let black thought and the roots band eat

Nike used the song, as is. Saul's message was brought to the masses as is. Yes, Nike has done a lotta fucked up shit to people in the 3rd world, but name one single multi-national corporation that hasn't? The only solution would be for 'socially conscious' artists trying to come up is to be broke. Knowing fully well they can't rely solely on album sales, what are these artists to do? Let 'commercial artists' make all the money? How does that benefit the conscious movement in the long run?

I respectfully disagree...

:(:smh:

i dont see the big problem...i happen to like fall out boy yeah their music is kinda dumb in an emo sorta way but the beats r nice and they aren't singing about drugs or violence..its teeny bopper shit...the roots r original and make good music and r just real brothers...music can merge sometimes a happy birthday song is ok...if lil wayne or jeezy had done a song with fall out boy they'd be talkin bout talkin shorty to the telly and covering her in birthday cake in her birthday suit and eating off then snorting crack or smoking weed while drinking a 40 or a bottle of henny then going out and shootng someone...
ya'll need to relax...
i wanna see the roots do a song with U2 tho...

I've got nothing against Fall Out Boy. They have some catchy ass shit but not really checkin' for them. I don't see how it makes the Roots sell outs though. If they did a song with Soulja Boy i'd probably see more reason for concern.

You musta forgot about Cody Chestnut.

Allthough he was black that song was embraced by a large white audience.

Roots would be well suited to expand their horizons due to lack of support.

Black people are 12% of America and how many of them support quality hip hop?

I respectfully disagree...

:(:smh:

:confused:What are you disagreeing with? That was ONE song they did. Here's another:

The Roots are not Poor Righteous Teachers or Public Enemy or some shit. They make a variety of songs and have always had a variety of guest stars on their albums.

Last time i went to their concert in Brixton Academy, South London I hardly saw black folks

Cant blame them

 thank you. I'm tired of motherfuckers always talking about shit like this. Selling out is when you turn your back on your people for money. I see none of these artist doing that. Get your money im not mad!!! If anything they get a message out to more people that I want out there. Selling out is the shit these gangsta rappers are doing to our kids. Go to jail and be cool while I sit in my big ass house and watch tv.
