they didn't sell out, they bought in.
Common doing commercials for the Gap
Talib and Slum doing commercials for Ford
Mos doing damn near everything
I don't see the problem. Would you rather they remain broke and relatively unknown forever just for the sake of being "cool" with the "real hip hop" crowd? I don't blame them.
Slum Village in Chevy video=marketing move
Common doing Gap commercial=marketing move
Mos Def and Common acting=career moves
Roots talking that grandiose hip-hop shit and making a video that caters to the current state of trash=selling out

Utter nonsense.
The concept of 'selling out' is so fickled. WTF does that term pertain to? The style of the song or the business deal responsible for the song? KRS ONE was said to be selling out when he dropped "Radio" with REM during a popular reign for REM on the pop charts. BUT, everyone celebrated the Nike Ad "Classic" as a return to real Hip-Hop. Huh? That makes NO sense. It doesn't get much more commercial than Nike, but I guess that point is moot, if the song doesn't have overt White appeal. Well, guess what? ALL Hip-Hop of every style has overt White appeal, considering they're the number one consumer. Fuck the dumb shit... get money.

Nike used the song, as is. Saul's message was brought to the masses as is. Yes, Nike has done a lotta fucked up shit to people in the 3rd world, but name one single multi-national corporation that hasn't? The only solution would be for 'socially conscious' artists trying to come up is to be broke. Knowing fully well they can't rely solely on album sales, what are these artists to do? Let 'commercial artists' make all the money? How does that benefit the conscious movement in the long run?I dont see anything wrong with this video hell Krs one did a song about rocking nikes back in the day but the saul song I think is selling out because he stands for social injustices and then takes money from Nike? Nike has done a lot of fucked up shit to people in so called third world counties.
Utter nonsense.
What "grandiose" hip-hop shit?
They talk about the same shit other rappers talk about. Pussy, money, bragging on their skills, crime, etc. Black Thought just happens to be a better mc than most rappers out nowadays. Just because they are a band people want to label them as "concious"...whatever the fuck that is.![]()

This shit was funny to me... As for 'selling out', don't be ridiculous. The whole point is to sell your music. Why else would they be in the business. They could do it for the love unsigned at home.
I respectfully disagree...

thank you. I'm tired of motherfuckers always talking about shit like this. Selling out is when you turn your back on your people for money. I see none of these artist doing that. Get your money im not mad!!! If anything they get a message out to more people that I want out there. Selling out is the shit these gangsta rappers are doing to our kids. Go to jail and be cool while I sit in my big ass house and watch tv.
