I'm rather disgusted by this whole issue. It can be traced back to two acts, the end of the single and no pricebreak on cds. Like a song, go buy it for a dollar. If you like two songs buy the album. That's how I used to handle it. Now 10 years ago record companies said the margins weren't strong enough on singles so we'll stop selling them. well low and behold folks start trading singles over the internet on Napster. Cds were initially $20 a pop easy in record stores, maybe less if it was brand new. But as the technology got cheaper you could walk into any Sam Goody and STILL find cds $20 a pop. Not special editions either just regular cds. The movie industry, which I think is fighting a sucessful war against piracy mostly, is still alive because it's easier for me to go buy a $10 dvd then download one of dubious quality. They could have nipped this in the bud with some pricing adjustments.
