The Predator - Teaser Trailer (2018)

The Predator Reshoots Reportedly Added Links To Previous Movies

In addition to changing a big chunk of the third act, recent reshoots for Shane Black’s The Predator have reportedly added more ties to previous movies in the series. Marketing for The Predator has only started to keep in, and while the first trailer was met with a muted response, subsequent previews have given fans a better idea of how the movie will play out. The story involves a group of disturbed war veterans who have to face off against the titular hunters in a small town. The government soon gets involved, and its revealed the creatures have been upgrading themselves with new abilities from every planet they hunt on.

In addition to the reshoots changing much of the original third act, The Predator will undergo a 3D post-conversion too. Test audiences were said to be confused by the tone of the original cut, which was a balance of action, horror and humor. Director Shane Black (The Nice Guys) is known for mixing comedy and action, but the reshoots are said to have made the movie feel a little more serious.

The Predator will also reveal that the government has known about the Predators for decades and have even captured one to understand its technology. This operation is known as Project: Stargazer and new reports from AVP Galaxy states the reshoots also added more ties to past entries. Olivia Munn’s scientist character will see some grainy photos from the first two movies, in addition to the spear of Predator 2’s hunter and Lex’s Alien tail spear from Alien Vs Predator.

When the film started shooting there was some confusion about its connections to previous movies, with some actors stating it didn’t really have any. It’s since been confirmed the other movies are canon within The Predator, and it appears the reshoots added more footage to strengthen those links. It also seemingly makes Alien Vs Predatorofficially part of the series, after its canonical status was put in doubt by the events seen in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels.

The Predator has had a tough time selling itself, but the most recent trailer – which highlighted the action and the new abilities of the creatures – seems to have soothed some fears. Project: Stargazer itself will also be the subject of a prequel novel to tie in with the release of the movie, which will fill in the backstory about the origins of the operation, and the capture of the first Predator.

The Predator Alternate Ending Featured Alien's Ripley
Sigourney-Weaver-in-Aliens-and-The-Predator.jpg

An unused alternate ending for The Predator featured the shocking return of Alien's Ellen Ripley. The Predator underwent extensive reshoots following lukewarm test audience scores, with the studio deciding the original cut strayed too far from franchise formula. This version featured a greater focus on the DNA splicing subplot, with the heroes teaming up with two Predator emissaries against the Upgrade Predator, as well as a setpiece featuring a battle against monstrous Predator hybrids.

The Predator currently ends with the reveal that the mysterious pod in the film featured a Predator Killer suit, which was a gift to humanity from the Fugitive Predator. Now, it's since emerged that another ending was considered, where the pod opens up to reveal an unnamed character wearing a Facehugger-style breathing mask labeled with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation logo. The original scripted ending also featured the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch, which would have set up the next sequel, but the star declined an offer to appear - though it turns out that the lead from a completely different franchise may have shown up instead.

It appears the filmmakers were still figuring out what the final scene of The Predator would be well into production, and it’s just been revealed by effects artist Yuri Everson on his official Instagram (via: AVP Galaxy) that another ending featured the return of Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise. Everson explains that three endings were shot in total, and that Ripley was played by stuntwoman Breanna Watkins instead of Sigourney Weaver, with the character's head being covered by the Facehugger mask.

There’s a lot to unpack from this alternate ending, with the implication clearly being the studio seriously considered another crossover between the Alienand Predator franchises. That said, while this ending certainly would’ve been a shocking cliffhanger, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The Predator is set in the year 2018, while the original Alien takes place in 2122. The Predator’s clearly have some advanced technology, so perhaps there were some time travel shenanigans going on, but that raises the further question of why would they go through so much trouble to take her back in the first place?

It also seems doubtful Sigourney Weaver would have been interested in such a crossover. She once stated part of the reason she wanted Ripley to die in Alien 3 was so she could rule out appearing in an Alien Vs Predator movie, since she found the concept so horrible. Perhaps Fox was hoping a positive reaction to this teaser would convince her otherwise, but the fact they didn’t use it suggests they knew better. Due to the mixed response to The Predator, it's uncertain whether the movie will receive a direct sequel now.

Bad movie, horrible plot. Could have been better. The Black dude Trevante Rhodes, Bird Box, is the best part about the movie. His acting outshines the rest of the cast
