Re: ***The OFFICIAL Super Bowl XLIV Discussion Thread (Saints vs. Colts in Miami, FL)

This is a tough one. If this was any other team I'd no doubt be taking the Colts but it's New Orleans and I want to see them win but it'll be a tough game for them against the Colts. No matter who wins I'm gonna hate to see the other team lose.

Re: ***The OFFICIAL Super Bowl XLIV Discussion Thread (Saints vs. Colts in Miami, FL)

Saints 38, Colts 37: I fully expect Indy to win this game by three touchdowns, but I'll pick New Orleans anyway because A) This pick is inherently meaningless, and B) Everyone else is picking Indy anyway. So FUCK IT! Saints win. Everyone goes batshit. YAY! Now, to the random crap:

-One of the things that amazes me about Peyton Manning is the speed at which he can go through his progression. There are QB's like Big Ben and McNabb and Favre and the like who will spend a lot of time scrambling around and doubling back to try and buy time and find an open man (in Big Ben's case, because his line has issues). But you NEVER see Peyton do that, and the reason why is because he never has to. There's no real way to measure this, but I bet Manning has the fastest read time of a defense of any QB in NFL history, and that he's leaps and bounds faster than the next guy on the list. He sees his options fucking instantly. It's a wonder to behold. The guy is barely ever sacked. He's barely ever touched. Part of that is his o-line, but the other part is that he's made his decision about where to throw before the defense has even taken two steps. That's why blitzing him rarely works, and NOT blitzing him is even worse. He's fucking Speed Reader.

-I wonder how long Manning will play football. He's been relatively healthy this year. As always, he's rarely sacked. He barely even has to move in the pocket. Couldn't he, conceivably, play until he's 45? I'm telling you, if you think Favre has stuck around forever, Manning will outlast us all. He'll play for at least another decade, then become the Colts official head coach immediately afterwards.

Dungy says Super Bowl won't be close

large_070310_dungy_vmed_330p.widec.jpg

Tony Dungy stands a year removed from retiring after seven seasons as coach of Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

In 12 months -- during which he's served as an NFL analyst for NBC and a mentor for Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, among other roles -- his allegiance hasn't budged.

Dungy, speaking to The New York Times in Miami, said the Saints couldn't do enough to force the Colts into needing a final, last-minute drive to win the Super Bowl.

"I think they're going to be so far ahead that people are going to say, 'Oh, ho-hum, he played a good game, they won by two scores, the Colts won their second championship,' " Dungy said of Manning on Thursday. "He's going to have those rings Sunday night. I don't think it's going to be close."

Dungy, who led Indianapolis to a Super Bowl XLI victory in 2007, said the Saints' difficulty in closing out the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC title game was evidence the Colts will have a convincing upper hand come Sunday.

"Minnesota is playing in New Orleans, they turn the ball over five times, have two or three stupid penalties and still lose in overtime," Dungy told The Times. "I don't see how it's going to be close. The Colts aren't going to turn it over seven times."

Dungy also weighed in on whether Manning was a better clutch quarterback than the Patriots' Tom Brady.

"Your coach wouldn't punt the ball to Peyton," Dungy said in referring to Patriots coach Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 deep in his own territory rather than give the ball back to Manning late in the Colts' Week 10, 35-34 victory.

"I would punt the ball to Tom Brady with one minute left," Dungy said. "Your coach is the best coach in the world and wouldn't punt it to [Manning]. What does that say?"

awwww shit!

Saints mostly healthy after final practice before Super Bowl vs. Colts

FORT LAUDERDALE -- The Saints emerged from their final practice before Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV against the Colts relatively healthy.

While the Colts have yet to practice with Pro Bowler Dwight Freeney this week and had Pro Bowl WR Reggie Wayne suffer a minor knee injury on Friday, the Saints had only backup CB Randall Gay and backup RB Lynell Hamilton missing from their workout.

Several players participated in practice in limited fashion: CB Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring), DE Bobby McCray (back, ankle), WR Courtney Roby (knee), S Darren Sharper (knee), TE Jeremy Shockey (knee) and T Zach Strief (shoulder). But all appeared on the injury report as probable to play.

Saints coach Sean Payton told pool reporter John Czarnecki that his team will have a midnight curfew on Friday and an 11 p.m. curfew on Saturday before Sunday night's kickoff.

"We prepared for this game like it's a Sunday night game," Payton said. "At halftime, because it's longer than usual, we will want the guys to maybe eat a little and also remove their shoulder pads and get a dry T-shirt." -- Sean Leahy

Re: ***The OFFICIAL Super Bowl XLIV Discussion Thread (Saints vs. Colts in Miami, FL)

so far on the Colts side, Freeny is trying to recover that ankle and Reggie Wayne tweaked his knee during Friday's practice. As far as Wayne goes, not sure that makes a huge diff. given how effective Manning has been in spreading the ball around to his receivers. Clark, Garcon, and Collie should get a lot of plays between them.

interesting article about the Madden Super Bowl simulation, analyzed with numerous other scenarios in play, i.e.:

-Colts, without Reggie Wayne, versus the Saints
-Colts versus the Saints without Darren Sharper
-Colts, without Manning, versus the Saints
-Colts versus the Saints without Brees
-Colts, without Manning, versus the Saints without Brees

-Colts, with Brees, versus the Saints with Manning

-Colts versus Saints, coaches swapped

and many more scenarios!!

The Time It Takes to Win It All
The players, coaches, marketing teams and scouts of the Saints and the Colts have worked a total of one million hours this year to get to this moment. What goes into an NFL season.

WK-AS704_COVER__F_20100204151741.jpg

In the grand scheme of sports, it may seem unfair that the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts were able to reach this Sunday's Super Bowl in Miami after playing only 18 games. The New York Yankees had to win 110 times last year just to make it to the World Series.

But don't let these numbers fool you. With 53 players per team divided into three distinct units—each with their own intricate playbooks—a professional football team is a complex organism.

Add a dozen coaches who study film late into the night, hundreds of grueling practice sessions, an annual college draft and the number of hours the players spend in the gym throughout the year, and the two teams that make it to the Super Bowl each season put in more hours of work than any team in any other sport.

According to an operational study of National Football League teams prepared for The Wall Street Journal by Boston Consulting Group, the typical NFL season requires 514,000 hours of labor per team. That's about eight times the effort it took to conceptualize, build and market Apple's iPod, according to BCG, and enough time to build 25 America's Cup yachts. If both Super Bowl teams dedicated themselves to construction rather than football, their members could have built the Empire State Building in seven seasons.

If you divide a team's total preparation time by the number of yards its offense gains on the field in a season, you'll find that an NFL team moves at the rate of about 32 hours per foot. And it's only getting worse: According to interviews with NFL personnel, the study's authors say the total prep time per team has nearly doubled in the last 20 years.

"We prepare so hard for one common goal," says Colts offensive lineman Kyle DeVan, "I think it would be easy to compete against businesspeople."

Super Bowl XLIV trench breakdown

Peyton Manning. Drew Brees. We've heard all about the superstar quarterbacks of Super Bowl XLIV, but what about the big guys in front of them? Here's a breakdown of the matchups in the trenches:
Colts Rush Offense vs. Saints Rush Defense

The Colts were the worst rushing team in football during the regular season. They are certainly not a physical football team that can line up in a two tight end set and run it right up the gut. Fact is, they were dreadful in most short-yardage or obvious running situations this season.
A big reason for this is they are undersized and lack the power to get vertical displacement off the football. In fact, if you ran into starting guards Ryan Lilja and Kyle Devan on the street you'd have a hard time believing they are starters on an offensive line. But what they lack in girth, they make up for in athleticism and football intelligence. Those qualities allow them to be sneaky productive in the running game. This unit is most effective running when the opposition brings in extra defensive backs, which we saw in the AFC Championship Game against the Jets.
Saints Rush Offense vs. Colts Rush Defense

If the Saints are going to win this game, they must win this matchup. It will not be easy. The Colts defense is no longer the undersized unit it has been in years past. It got significantly bigger inside with defensive tackles that weigh over 300 pounds, like Daniel Muir and Antonio Johnson. Those two combine with active and aggressive tackle/ends like Raheem Brock and Eric Foster to give the Colts an excellent rotation inside.
That defensive line allows playmaker linebackers like Gary Brackett and Clint Session to do what they do best, which is run and hit. Brackett has long been the heart and soul of this team defensively, yet is still one of the more underrated players in the NFL. Session has burst on the scene this year as a violent downhill tackler who is among the more dynamic young defensive players in the league.
The Colts, though, have a tall order going against a Saints offensive line that has consistently opened holes for its three-pronged rushing attack (Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell). Most pundits will tell you the Saints need to run the football to keep the ball out of Manning's hands. It is actually much more important they do so to open up the middle of the field for the play-action pass game that allows the Saints to get big chunks of yardage. The Saints need points in this game and lots of them -- not time of possession.
Colts Pass Protection vs. Saints Pass Rush

The good news for the Saints is their defensive line is much better at applying pressure than they are getting credit. Will Smith is the bell cow of this group and a consistent threat, but they also have gotten much-needed contributions from Anthony Hargrove, Bobby McCray, Sedrick Ellis and Remi Ayodele. All of those guys have shown an ability to get to the passer and cause damage.
The bad news is it may not really matter all that much. Manning is the best quarterback at getting rid of the football before the pass rush can get to him. Even when his linemen get beat cleanly at the line of scrimmage, Manning is able to sense that and get rid of the football almost immediately. So quickly, in fact, he rarely gets hit, let alone sacked.
The team that had the most success getting to Manning was San Francisco; it did so primarily up the middle by employing a bull-rush technique. As long as the defender is covered up by a Colt, Manning stays alive in the pocket and thinks he is protected. If the bull rusher gets enough of a push, he can grab Manning's arm or take him down before he knows what hit him. It sounds counterintuitive but it is better than coming free, because if a defender comes free, Manning will unload the football without hesitation.
Saints Pass Protection vs. Colts Pass Rush

Obviously Dwight Freeney's ability to play, and play at a high level, is paramount in this matchup. What makes it especially difficult for Freeney is his right ankle is his plant leg, the one from which he generates all of his force when turning the corner on the offensive tackle.
The problem for Freeney, even if he does play, and his counterpart on the other side, Robert Mathis, is they may have to turn the corner at a greater angle than normal just to get to Brees in the first place. The Saints are blessed to have one of the best interior offensive lines in football, led by All-Pro guard Jahri Evans. The Colts interior pass rush is pedestrian. That combination makes it absolutely critical, from a Saints perspective, that those three interior blockers stone-wall the Colts inside rushers, giving up as little ground as possible to them. If they accomplish this, Brees will be able to step up in the pocket and deliver the football from three or four yards behind the line of scrimmage. As great as Mathis and a healthy Freeney are, that angle is almost impossibly steep for them to be able to turn the corner and track down Brees. That could mean plenty of time for the most accurate passer in the NFL.
