Foot Locker Posts Drop in Basketball Shoe Business
Sales at existing stores rose 2.9%, below analyst forecasts
Foot Locker Inc. reported a rare decline in its basketball shoe business, a sign that its signature category is vulnerable to shifting consumer tastes toward a broader range of casual athletic shoes.
Shares of the company fell as much as 6.8% in early trading on Friday to $54.48. The stock has fallen 13% in the three months ended Thursday.
Executives at Foot Locker said basketball footwear sales declined in the mid-single-digit range, with particular weakness in sales of Nike’s LeBron James and Kevin Durant signature shoes, causing its sales at existing stores to come in below its forecasts. Same-store sales rose 2.9%, while analysts expected a 4.5% increase, according to a survey by Consensus Metrix.
“Our core consumer changes their preferences sometimes multiple times during a day,” said Chief Executive Dick Johnson on the company’s earnings call with analysts.
The company said it has added to its portfolio of casual sneakers, though it expects the basketball shoe category to improve through the year. Mr. Johnson noted that a new release of Nike’s Jordan sneaker is due this weekend, whereas last year it had already happened.
Foot Locker’s weakness in basketball shoe sales, which typically revolves around a series of limited releases from top brands such as Nike Inc., Adidas AG, and Under Armour Inc., comes as those main vendors have ramped up efforts to sell more product directly to consumers. Mr. Johnson said the practice of controlling releases of high-demand sneakers is something both Foot Locker and the shoe manufacturers are working to balance.
“You all saw the Adidas results, you saw the Under Armour results, you know they are having success. Do we want some more of their products? Absolutely, but again the scarcity model is what fuels our sneaker industry,” he said. The company doesn’t break out total sales in the category.
For the quarter, sales rose 3.7% to $1.99 billion and profit gained 3.8% to $191 million.
In recent months, Foot Locker executives have been working to improve its assortment of women’s apparel and footwear, focusing on its Six:02 chain of stores and catering more toward customers who prefer athletic fashion over athletic performance gear, a trend that has hobbled some of the traditional sportswear makers lately. Foot Locker said sales of women’s footwear were up mid-single digits for the quarter, in part on the strength of product endorsed by the singer Rihanna.
Decline in youth participation in certain sports coupled with the broadening casual-athletic trend weighed on sales at Foot Locker’s Eastbay chain, which focuses on selling gear to high school athletes.
Its results come after Hibbett Sports Inc. reported better-than-expected earnings Friday, though sales rose less than analysts forecast. Pittsburgh-based Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. on Thursday posted strong sales growth but offered a downbeat outlook amid closeout sales at rival stores like Sports Authority, which has filed for bankruptcy protection and is now working to liquidate.
During the period, Foot Locker opened 32 new stores and closed 19, ending the quarter with 3,396 total stores globally across a number of brands.

I agree. People want something that's going to look better with the fitted looks(ribbed/elastic cuffs, slim/tapered, etc) that are being rocked right now.
Some of the clunkier high-top styles just don't work with this.

Nike.com has a way better return policy and it's easier to order from on Jordan releases so I stopped ordering all shoes (gifts, kids shoes, etc) from Foot Locker.
The few pair of shoes that I got my did that weren't basketball shoes were custom made Adidas which I got from Adidas.com.
There is no incentive for me as a consumer to shop there.
