New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley underwent surgery Friday in Los Angeles to repair the torn ACL in his right knee.
"Surgery was a success," Barkley's mother, Tonya Johnson, wrote in an Instagram post that included a picture of her son in a hospital bed.
Barkley is expected to make a full recovery and, with almost 11 months to get back to full strength, be ready for the start of next season. The surgery took place 40 days after the injury occurred in a Week 2 loss to the Chicago Bears.
The procedure Friday was expected to reconstruct the ACL and repair the meniscus in his right knee. Barkley also injured his MCL, but that was not believed to need surgical repair.

Barkley and the Giants were waiting for the swelling to ease before having the surgery. This isn't uncommon when there is also some sort of MCL damage. It also provided Barkley an opportunity to strengthen the knee before the operation.
Still, Barkley had to work around Dr. Neal ElAttrache's busy schedule. ElAttrache, the surgeon and team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Rams, was in the World Series bubble in Arlington, Texas, until earlier this week.
The Dodgers clinched the championship Tuesday night.
Barkley was hurt on Sept. 20 in Chicago. He was running toward the sideline when Bears safety Eddie Jackson tackled him. Barkley grabbed at the knee as he was headed to the ground.
Barkley was helped off the field and later carted to the locker room. He had four rushes for 28 yards before exiting. His season ended with 19 rushes for 34 yards and no touchdowns.

It was the second straight injury-ravaged season for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Barkley played 13 games and just barely topped 1,000 yards rushing last year as he dealt with a pesky high ankle sprain after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018.
Barkley remained around the team the past month despite being placed on injured reserve. He was present in meetings and even traveled with the team to road games in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Coach Joe Judge credited his leadership as a reason. Barkley was voted one of the team's offensive captains earlier this year. A teammate told ESPN that Barkley was still being himself and "inspiring" despite the injury stripping him of the ability to contribute on the field.
Barkley did make news last week when he was among a group of Giants and their friends who were seen on video in public not wearing face masks or properly social distancing. Barkley was riding a bicycle in the Instagram videos that were since deleted, at one point dancing while popping a wheelie.
Judge said the situation would be handled internally.
"I'm not going to comment on anything specific on that. Saquon is out in L.A. readying for surgery," Judge said earlier this week. "Actually, riding a stationary bike has been part of his rehab prepping for surgery. In terms of Saquon and where he's at, I know he's getting ready for the surgery right now. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with him."

New York Giants coach Joe Judge says team will deal with maskless players internally
Oct 27, 2020
  • Jordan RaananESPN Staff Writer
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants coach Joe Judge had conversations with several players, including Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones, who appeared in a video over the weekend without masks and not practicing social distancing inside a Manhattan bar. He also addressed the topic with the team.
Judge said the Giants will deal with the situation internally, but he seemed confident after speaking with those involved that there wasn't any malicious intent or behavior.
Among those in the Instagram post that was eventually taken down were Barkley, Jones and wide receiver Sterling Shepard. The Giants players had a simulated bye week this weekend after playing on Thursday night, with their next game on Monday when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"The only thing I'm going to say on that is this group of guys has been very responsible from the very beginning. They tried to do the right thing, the entire team," Judge said. "Based on the conversations and information I gathered from our players, I believe they were trying to do the right things as teammates with going out and having dinner together the other night.

"We have to just make sure that we are conscious as an organization in everything we do. But anything else on top of that we're going to deal with internally."

As of the weekend, it was unlikely the team would fine or suspend the players involved barring any new information, according to a source. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the league was looking into the video but waiting for the Giants to report back first.
Earlier this season, the NFL fined 10 Las Vegas Raiders players, including tight end Darren Waller and quarterback Derek Carr, for breaking coronavirus protocols at a public charity event hosted by Waller's foundation.
Barkley and Daniel Jones had dinner with some teammates and friends in a private room at a restaurant in New York on Friday night, a source said. Afterward, they were invited to have a drink at a bar that is closed to the public.
A video of Jones sharing a drink with a woman was taken at the Manhattan bar, the source said. The video from DJ Lugg Head, who served as a driver that evening, was eventually deleted.
At one point, the video showed Barkley riding a bicycle and doing what seemed to be wheelies on the street. Barkley is set to have surgery on a torn ACL later this week.

"Saquon is out in LA ready for surgery," Judge said when asked specifically about that part of the video. "Actually, riding a stationary bike has been part of his rehab prepping for surgery. So, in terms of Saquon and where he is at, he's getting ready for the surgery right now and obviously our thoughts and prayers are with him."

The Giants had seemed to be successful in following the league's social distancing guidelines to this point. No Giants players have gone on the reserve/COVID-19 list since the start of the season.
But Judge acknowledged this wasn't a good look for the Giants or their two biggest stars.
"We have to make the right decisions," Judge said. "What they tried to do as a team on a night off, a simulated bye week if you could, was go out to dinner and hang together as a team. That is something they were looking to do. Stay tight with each other.
"I've had a lot of in-depth conversations with all the guys involved, as well as the rest of the team. They understand the consequences of anything you do right now in this COVID environment, as well as in the public eye with how they're looked at, how we have to be careful and make the right decisions."

New York Giants aware of video showing Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley without masks
Oct 24, 2020
The New York Giants say they are aware of a video that shows starting quarterback Daniel Jones and injured running back Saquon Barkley maskless and not practicing social distancing while at a bar.
"We are looking into the nature and context of what is on the video," the team said in a statement.
The video was posted on Instagram but has since been taken down.
Sources told ESPN's Jordan Raanan that team discipline is unlikely. The NFL, however, could choose to discipline them.

The two Giants had dinner with some teammates, including receiver Sterling Shepard, and friends in a private room at a restaurant in New York on Friday night, a source said. Afterward, they were invited to have a drink at a bar that is closed to the public. A video of Jones sharing a drink with a woman was taken at the Manhattan bar, a source said.
Earlier this season, the NFL fined 10 Las Vegas Raiders players, including tight end Darren Waller and quarterback Derek Carr, for breaking coronavirus protocols at a public charity event hosted by Waller's foundation.
The Giants lost 22-21 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night and do not play again until Nov. 2 on Monday Night Football against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Buccaneers rookie could show Giants what they passed on

A video of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and injured running back Saquon Barkley at a bar without masks on Friday night is legitimate but it’s unclear if they are in violation of the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.
Jones and Barkley, along with a few teammates and friends, went to dinner in Manhattan in a private room of a restaurant, according to a person familiar with the situation. After dinner, the group was invited by a bar owner known by the group to have a drink at a private bar, which is closed to the public. It was at that bar where the video, posted and shared to Instagram by someone who goes by the name of DJ Lugghead, was recorded. DJ Lugghead served as a driver for the Giants group that night.
The picture was captioned, “Rockin wit Danny dimes and Saquon.” The DJ also posted a video of Jones taking a sip of a drink handed to him by an unidentified woman and another that appeared to show a man resembling Barkley riding a bike in the street. Barkley is set to undergo surgery next week after tearing his ACL on Sept. 20. He has been strengthening his knee ever since in preparation for surgery.
In a statement, the Giants said: “We are aware of the video that was posted. We are looking into the nature and context of what is on the video.’’
The NFL did not immediately return a request for comment. Under the league’s COVID-19 protocols, players can be fined for conduct detrimental if they are found to have engaged in “reckless” behavior, according to ESPN, including attending a gathering at an indoor bar with more than 10 people (other than to pick up a to-go order) without wearing a mask.

Jones, Barkley and the Giants group may not have violated these protocols, since they are tested regularly for COVID-19, and they might not have mixed with anyone from outside their bubble.
The picture of Jones and Barkley, both 23 years old, made its way around social media Saturday. DJ Lugghead, the original poster, told The Post the video was from last October and not Friday night. That turns out to be untrue.
“It was all posts from last year,” the DJ said. “It’s a memory that popped up from a year ago. That’s why I posted it.”
The DJ declined to comment further when contacted again and informed of The Post’s reporting.
DJ Lugghead said he played at Common Ground in the Meatpacking District on Friday night — the bar says on its website it is open for 25 percent capacity indoor dining. The Giants group was not at Common Ground on Friday night.
The Giants, following their 22-21 loss to the Eagles, were given Friday, Saturday and Sunday off by head coach Joe Judge. Their next game is Monday, Nov. 2, against the Buccaneers.
