Bungie E3 Announcement put on hold; blames publisher

A letter was just released on Bungie.net explaining the cancellation of Bungie's planned revealing for the newest project. Damn you, mysterious "publisher".

I give Nintendo a 7/10
They boasted alot (well deserved i guess)
Didnt show anything that we would consider "hardcore" games. But lets be honest at this point even though their software is not selling that well all they need is party stuff and they will prob continue their great hardware sales.
They are at least attempting to get better at online with animal crossing.
even though at thought the band and wii resort were kinda lame i also said that about wii sports and....

I give Nintendo a 7/10

it doesnt deserve its own thread yet so here it goes.. at least we know what Raven was up to since the passed marvel ultimate alliance 2 to another developer

Singularity announced, debut trailer inside

Time travel is a fickle thing. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the time it goes wrong. Very wrong.

Introducing Singularity, Raven Software's new first-person action game. Unveiled at Activision's E3 2008 press conference, the game wrestles with the general preconceived notion of time as a straightforward entity. When you deviate from that linear path however, things become unstable.

Regarding setting, the game is clearly takes place in Russia, as evidenced by the Soviet flags and the Kyrillian lettering in the logo at the end. Visually, the game looks fairly similar to the grays and browns of Dark Sector and TimeShift. That's about all that can be grasped from the game's unveiling and debut trailer, which can be seen below.

Here is the truth about what is really going on with Bungie and Microsoft at E3.

Bungie is developing a new Halo action game and since they separated from Microsoft they have licensed the Halo brand from Microsoft who is going to publish the game. Bungie had a sixty second knock’em down teaser trailer made that was going to unveil the game and it was going to be the close to Microsoft media keynote at E3. This was going to be followed up by Bungie doing their separate press event later on in the week on Wednesday to show off the new game.

Keep in mind that I am talking about a possible third Halo game in the works that is separate from Microsoft and Peter Jackson’s Halo : Chronicles or Ensemble Studio’s Halo Wars.

However the Microsoft executive that was in charge of their show at E3 is Don Mattrick and apparently there is some possible drama going on behind their evolving relationship with the now independent Bungie. The only person above Don Mattrick in Xbox is Robbie Bach then the chain of command goes to Steve Balmer and the board of directors. Don ordered the new Bungie Halo game to be cut from the E3 briefing at the last moment and essentially gag ordered Bungie from showing the game off that week. Don didn't want a non-Microsoft studio game to overshadow all of the Microsoft Studio developed games. He then went on to make a little quip about having an E3 breifing that was not all about Halo. This is sort of like inviting someone to the prom and leaving them at home at the last minute while they can’t get another date.

There is no Halo themed media event that is currently on the calendar. Bungie has been working towards a big media push about this game with the unveiling of the Superintendent character and they have been trying to build a buzz within their fanbase.

Microsoft’s has never really explained why they prevented Bungie from going on with their media event on Wednesday at E3. It has to be a new Halo game since if it was an new IP Microsoft would not have their hands on the control of the brand and would not have had the power to silence Bungie about it. So soon Bungie and Microsoft will come to terms about when and how Microsoft is going to unveil this new Bungie developed Halo game and then show it to the public. As in any healthy relationship communication and honestly is the key.

it doesnt deserve its own thread yet so here it goes.. at least we know what Raven was up to since the passed marvel ultimate alliance 2 to another developer

Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton discussed Sony's take on the recent announcement that Final Fantasy XIII will release simultaneously on the Xbox 360 with the PS3 with a round-table of journalists, including our own team at Joystiq. "Am I disappointed by it? Yes," Tretton told the group, adding: "Am I surprised by it? No." He was quick to stress that the game remains a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but that "seeing as there isn't that big of a [PS3] installed base in [there], I don't know how big of a coup that is for us."

Speaking on the subject of paying off publishers for exclusivity, Tretton told Joystiq "[Sony] invested so much money in the [PS3] hardware" that it simply "can't write checks for exclusive software."

While popular theory is that Microsoft paid Square Enix off for its recent handfull of upcoming releases, word around the industry campfire points at a decision made by Square Enix months ago to focus on multiplatform development that saw Final Fantasy XIII land on the Xbox 360. With a high install base and solid attach rate for the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe many developers are forgoing exclusivity in order to lessen the blow of "next-gen" game development. Capcom has been a prime example of this point with Devil May Cry 4; which saw better sales on the Xbox 360.

Regardless of the situation, Square Enix is happy to bring the experience to as many people as possible and as gamers we all should be too.

No one's a winner in E3's console wars

12:00 AM CDT on Saturday, July 19, 2008

By VICTOR GODINEZ / The Dallas Morning News

Worst. E3. Ever.

I wasn't expecting much, but what transpired in Los Angeles at the annual video-game conference this week was a pretty big waste of time.

Microsoft

Microsoft scored some points by confirming:

• The rumor of Netflix video streaming coming to the Xbox 360 later this year.

• The upcoming ability to copy an entire game to your console's hard drive so it loads faster and plays quieter.

• Final Fantasy XIII will be a simultaneous release in the U.S. with the PS3 version. This one was a coup, but the game probably isn't coming out for a year or more.

But the price drop on the Xbox 360 Premium from $349 to $299 is misleading, since the drop is really a clearance sale. When the 20-gig Premium is sold out, a 60-gig version will take its place ... at the original $349 price.

Nintendo

Nintendo is in peak form right now, and taking a victory lap at E3 would be understandable. Too bad for gamers that's exactly what the company did. There was no announcement of a new Mario, Zelda or Metroid title for the Wii. Instead, we got Animal Crossing. Blah.

The MotionPlus add-on for the Wii remote looks intriguing. The device supposedly allows the console to more accurately track how you swing the controller.

A fencing game displayed proved that the one game every gamer has pined for since the Wii was unveiled may finally be feasible: a Star Wars lightsaber game. Unfortunately, such a game was not even officially discussed at the show.

Sony

Nearly a total catastrophe on every level.

First off, Sony seems to think that a $400 game console is a good thing. Yes, the 80-gigabyte PS3 system is $100 less than the original 80-gig model. But memo to Sony: The PS3 is still way overpriced.

A video download service? It would have been awesome a year ago. Now it's just a day late and a dollar short.

Home, the Second Life-like virtual world for the PS3, remains in limbo and seems increasingly pointless. Has any gamer in history ever hankered to walk around a virtual mall looking at Nike billboards?

Sony's MAG (Massive Action Game – placeholder name, presumably, hopefully) was the only product mentioned that left me with even a slight pulse. The game will supposedly allow 256 human players to duke it out on a single battlefield in eight-man teams.

A recipe for unbridled chaos? Sure. But a melee this size (assuming the PS3 can support such epic confrontations without keeling over) is guaranteed fun.

Part of the problem for all three of these companies might be that the show was simply held too late in the year. All the big games coming out before Christmas (Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Ghostbusters, etc.) were announced weeks ago, in order to get the marketing campaigns ramped up.

Perhaps if E3 had been held in May, as it traditionally was until last year, those games could have debuted at the show and created some buzz.

In its current form, though, E3 was basically D.O.A.
