Sports are overpriced. You need to spend hundreds of dollars a month in many cases just to watch your team play. The people who really love it can't afford it and the people who can afford it really don't love it. Yes, the Superbowl is the most watched event on TV in the US, but ad revenues have doubled in 10 years while the number of viewers has not.
That is not a sustainable model. Having migrated to UK from US I thought I should try the English Premier League but they are not better, they have the exact same issue. I love EPL and Arsenal, in particular, but living in London I couldn't see myself shelling out £120 a month to watch Arsenal take the piss 4 times a month on 3 different channels. And don't get me started on attending an actual game.
NFL will run you $100 for a ticket in the top corner, then $40 for parking, $15 for a 12oz beer. Quadruple that if you are naive enough to bring your family to the game. So what, I can sit in the sun and watch through my binoculars? The people and culture that made these sports popular mass market events have been priced out.
Now the stadium is full of NYT readers who are on their phone for half the match, golf clapping at random intervals along with the rest of the crowd. It's not even competitive in many cases.
