The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborhoods

CRAB WONTONS
These deep-fried dumplings filled with crabmeat and cream cheese are popular...but nobody eats cheese in China. We're all lactose intolerant. But we do like to curdle other things, like fermented bean paste and duck blood.

General Tso
Come on, this guy was too busy warding off rebellions to be cooking. This recipe is strictly American—chunks of chicken battered, fried and sweetened for Western tastes. No one in Hunan had even heard of this before 1970.

BBivxGs.img

CHOP SUEY
Ah yes, the garbage disposal of the omelet world. Refrigerator scraps stir-fried and topped with an egg. It is said that some Chinese cook working during the Gold Rush served it as a personal insult to some drunk American miners.

BBivAci.img

PU PU PLATTER
Everything about this appetizer is an affront to poor people. It's nothing but fried, greasy egg rolls, spare ribs, chicken wings and beef teriyaki—which isn't even Chinese!

BBivk38.img

SWEET 'N' SOUR PORK
Chunks of pork, battered, deep-fried and slimed in a thick orange sauce. There are obvious Southern barbecue influences here.

BBivvgY.img

SWEET 'N' SOUR CHICKEN
Chicken gets the same treatment, but it's all white meat because somehow that makes it better. With pieces of pineapple to assuage your guilt.

BBivvhW.img

SALAD
We cook our food. When dysentery is a concern, you would too.

BBivxMM.img

EGG ROLLS
Does anyone eat these? These thick-skinned, blistered rolls that look like Linda Blair's face in The Exorcist are nothing like the real Chinese spring rolls, which are smaller, thin and crispy—and edible.

BBivAhs.img

BEEF AND BROCCOLI
There's really nothing wrong with this dish, except that we don't have Western broccoli in the East.

BBivvkc.img

FORTUNE COOKIES
Another ploy to amuse Westerners, these flag-bearers of fortune don't even tell you good news anymore, only your closely guarded shortcomings. Chinese people eat something more fortuitous for dessert: oranges. They're good luck

none of those dishes are authentic chinese and definitely western/american as such theres no reason why a black owned restaurant can't serve these in our own neighborhoods.

Question..would you patronize a black takeout eatery that served "asian" dishes?

not a bad idea, but have you ever tried to make Chinese food at home? getting the taste the same as you get in the restaurant has been impossible for me and anybody I know. I am a black dude, but I can kick ass with Italian cuisine. I make a manicotti that a woman who recently came back from Italy told me was better than what she had there - I seasoned the cheese, which is something that they don't do it Italian restaurants. You end up with a mouthful of work had a cheese.

Chinese food, there is nothing I have done that can get that taste just right as they have at the Chinese food spots

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

The times that i goto a Chinese restaurant, I rarely ever see the employees eat the food there. I see them eating food from home. Because they know that the food is shit and they'll never put that garbage down their throat.

When you see someone eating behind the take out counter, it's always vegetables and rice, never general tso or other horseshit they're slinging.

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

One of the first things I do when I go to Chinese or Japanese restaurants, is check to see if their own people eat there. If it's 50/50 or better, I'll eat there. I don't fuck with them spots in the malls or in the hood :smh:

:yes::yes::yes:

this is what i;m talking about..

from her website

After running a successful catering business in New York for the past 15 years, Chef Shawnee has decided to bring her unique culinary personality to the Atlanta Metro area. Combining the savory spices of classic soul food with the hallmark dishes of Asian cuisine, Shawnee is sure to invigorate people's taste buds with her flashy new concept. Partnered with her 21 year old son Kingsley, the duo looks to bring big apple flavor to the peach state.

but here's the thing..its not only proven that its NOT asian cuisine but very american not only that southern influence which basically means BLACK.. so we need to take that shit BACK!

its JUST recipes..no magic.

I've been telling people this for years.
You rarely see Chinese people in the own spots.
Maybe its because they too busy running the gambling and hooker houses in the back

There is an Asian supermarket up the street from where you work. Hit Rockside all the way up to Warrensville Center and take that to Miles. It's right across from where Randall mall used to be. You can find all the ingredients you need up there.

Most recipes can be found online.

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

Years ago a black guy opened a Chinese spot in the hood and his rice taste like 1 of those 99 cent bags of rice that you can buy at the grocery store. I just seen on the cooking channel where Americans refuse to eat chinese food at first so they decided to add more meat and lest vegetables and Americans started going crazy over their food. I personally prefer Thai rice bc it has a better taste.

its all about using the proper oils at the right heat.
It takes a minute to find the right sesame seed oil and chilli paste.

its worth it. These basic dishes combined with some fried wings and some greens could work.

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

I must say that when I was in El Paso, the best Chinese restaurant that I'd eaten at didn't have one Asian in the joint. Come to think of it, there are Mexicans working Beni Hana here as well.

Having said that, why not replicate what they are doing to keep dollars in the community. Not a bad idea...supplying a demand.

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

I don't eat that nonsense.

MSG and Sugar if you add all that bullshit and you'll get the taste your use to.

I felt the same way when i first started making Chinese food my self.

Re: The case for why Black People should run chinese food takeout in their neighborho

The thing is that Asians have the distribution game on lock when it comes to the food products and hair. I've personally been inside warehouses that are a few acres large right in the port cities here in the East Coast. I've asked the managers how far out do they supply and they tell me that they pretty much have the entire coast on lock. There are two major distributors in Jersey City alone who supply just about everyone. On the flip side, I've spoken to a couple of big dogs in the hair game and it's the same there. It's almost like the drug game where they have a system and don't care and don't need anything from outsiders because their system is tight. Not saying it can't be done but I'm sure there's a reason why there aren't many of us selling it.
