The Americans: The 2nd best espionage/spy show on TV

damn elizabeth does have a soul
she went back for their real wedding rings...but was someone peaking through the window on that last shot?

Man the series finale might be too much for me....

I might have to watch this shit in chunks.

Anything can happen.. straight up anything ..

And we still have the summit..

Do they sacrifice their freedom to save their country or do they run??

Will Stan’s wife’s allegiance be revealed or will the show leave that mystery hanging...

Knowing this show.. I could straight up see them not reveal anything about her.

i'm enjoying yall commentary. i really don't watch shows live. i'll catch up tomorrow for sure.

Man it might be a good thing that you weren’t watching this live... I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. I can’t remember ever feeling this type of tension in my life.

shit i might cry after the finale
real talk this has been on my favorite shows all time. proably second only to the wire or breaking bad

This shit is criminally underrated....

This shows thread should be 100 pages...

I don’t see how any other spy show could ever top this... like I was fully invested in every single character even all the way down to the immortal mail robot.

And the greatest thing about it ... is that it always felt real...

Like... this episode showed that after all these years... Stan was always paying attention. It took Elizabeth going solo and dropping all the bodies that finally put that noose around them.

Philip got the fuck up out of there on they ass
they didn't know who they were fucking with.
Elizabeth is still putting country first she finally saw the center for what they were. All these years they sold her a dream of peace and then when its time for peace they don't want it.
Good riddance.
Clapped old girl from the center like it was nothing she too didn't know who she was fucking with
Olec is the man. Straight up.
Stan is just too good at his job his gut is world class he hasn't been wrong ever.
whether he's known it or not.

Paige didn't grow up like her mom. She had that Pastor Tim influence in her and her mom had to set her straight
Look
you grew up in a house and never went hungry. You need to shut yo ass all the way up talking to me.

About three years ago, FX gave me about the most perfect end to a television series with that last scene in Justified between Raylan and Boyd looking at each other through partition glass ("we dug coal together").

I'm praying they can do it again next week with what has been one of the best television shows I have ever seen, that has been so trascendent that it's all but ruined everything else in the spy genre for me.

Yeah I’m with you fam.... this show has single handedly raised the bar on the spy game. Not only was this one of the best television shows of all time.. Its the best spy thing I’ve ever seen. I’m including movies, tv shows, video games, and mini-series. Nothing compares to this. Hell a couple weeks ago... they spent a good two minutes showing the meticulous details that are needed to just decode a message.

ehhh - granted most spy flicks are about black ops and counterintel

Americans is a great show but its not the be all best work on trade craft

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the BBC mini series (the movie is almost as good)
Russia House
The Good Shepard is also pretty good- some trade craft -mostly high level stuff

I’ve seen all of those and I have to respectfully disagree. It’s the level of attention to detail that this show does that Other properties can’t match.... mainly because they didn’t have the time to allow the small details to things. Like the fact that Phillip and Elizabeth keep separate wedding rings to signify the legit marriage because they feel that their real marriage is a cover. The call backs to small unnoticeable things from prior seasons... like Elizabeth smoking like a sailor in Season 1... when she felt like she was alone on that job even though she was married to Phillip they weren’t together together.. that when she was invested in the relationship she kicked the habit but fell back into that pattern when then Season she had to alone again. Cigarettes where her outlet.. turns out that cigarettes were one of the things that got Stan on to them because even in Season 1... she never smoked in front of people because she didn’t want to add something that has her stand out.. it was one small detail that only a long time fan would catch but it ended up becoming important.

Like this show... actually worked to make being a spy seem like a job. There is no glamor. There is no reward. You do what you were trained to do. And just like any job... the show did it best to show how this type of routine wears you down... where you have to ask “is it even worth it, why am I doing this?” Phillip went through this with Martha and Elizabeth finally had her moment this season.. when she realized that her Country cares more about old ideals then peace and that they were willing to kill a comrade to protect them... which was counter to her training. That’s what made the flashback so effective.. she realized that the Centre has lost their way.

Episode was too short!!!!

I agree with Page though. Tell her the truth, so she can really know what she's getting into.

I bursted out laughing when page called Lizabeth a hoe though. The out take from that must be hilarious.

If you saw the BBC mini series and feel that way -ok...

Look I agree Americans had much more time for character development and used it excellently... all of your points illustrate the character development, not trade craft corruption nor politics ...
Here is the arc: The Americans started season 1 as idealists - and by the time Phil quit he became a cynic - this season so far Elizabeth followed his descent and might pull Paige along too.

But with TTSS - the characters in story start as cynics doing a thankless unglamorous job. Its a mystery first with an exclusive focus on trade craft and manipulation

here we go
gotta watch this shit live

  • damn Phil knows that Henry belongs here and Elizabeth is the one that thinks he should come? what a juxaposition...as is always the case I agree with Phil. Henry the only innocent and true thing about their relationship.
  • is this the 1st time Elizabeth has cried?
  • when its all said and done Oleg might be the truest hero of this series. Never caught a body, always did the right thing (regardless of flag)
  • damn the Russian father fliped

this episode is 1hr and 30 minutes.....

Basically 1hr and 30 minutes of tense hell...

Stan is on to the garage

Man man man :smh:

When he broke down and said “there are two of them”... I just had to go close my eyes for a second

And then Stan is on to them... ughhhh

Give me strength

What is Stan going to do when he sees them...

Gawd damn... this is the fucking toughest thing that I’ve ever had to watch on TV.

This is the type of tension that we should have gotten in the Sopranos finale.

Oh shit Stan pulls the gun out... on them

Gawd damn...

This is so tough. Like tough

Gawd damn Philip confessed to Stan.

damn i gotta piss but cant leave my seat
is Stan gonna connect the dots with Oleg's confession

is this gonna end in a team up?
