I would consider "Jojo" as a viable candidate to play Teena Marie. I believe they are around the same height, and she can definitely carry a tune.

who knows - with rick james' estate, getting rights to portray him could be challenging
we do need more interesting movies, this would be a good one. likely they would make one with rick as the focus before teena

Teena was a bad M-F-hands down... 
Rick James and Teena Marie at the 2004 BET Awards was a classic moment and now quite sad because both are no longer with us.
But I also think back to the 2011 BET Awards when BET tried to replicate that moment by having Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle sing their way down the aisle and the crowd was quite quiet and it was kinda sad and I know Rick James had renewed popularity because of Chappelle's Show but being 2005, there probably was still a good bit of the crowd that had clear memeries of Rick and Teena's music.
By 2011, the BET Awards crowds and audience were definitely getting younger and skewing more towards rap and this crowd clearly had no clue who they were and I think from that point we started seeing less of the older acts, unless they were being honored or had renewed interest such as New Edition.

I like Joss Stone but her soul sounds forced and not quite authentic. I think she just likes to sing soul music kinda how Iggy raps with that black twang but it ain't her real voice. Just my opinion. Joss does have a killer band though. Ain't no white soul singer fucking with Teena Marie. She was a true rare gem. You can't fake the funk!
