Music: Teena Marie didn’t play no games on that stage

I had the chance of meeting her while bartending at the former Omni Hotel on the Detroit Riverfront.. and all I can say is the the talent was real.. she was singing her conversations instead of talking as part of her vocal exercises.. THE TRUTH...
WOW!!!

One day in '01 or '02 I was getting off of work at 5, and this white boy I worked with said "my friends and I have an extra ticket to the Clippers game, wanna go?" He was cool, so I went.

So the game is about to start, and the PA guy says "singing the national anthem... Teena Marie." Them white boys couldn't understand why I was flippin out.

Me: "YO, that's Teena Marie"
White boy : "Dude, who?"

She killed that shit too.

Real fucking talent unlike that bullshit that's out there today!! Young people don't respect this shit!!

You are so right. I had to rent a car from Enterprise and the driver who came to pick me up was playing a rap "song" on the radio and I swear every other word was fuck, bitch, dick muthafucka etc. I asked him why he liked what he was hearing and he said "Aw you're just old school". I said age doesn't matter when it comes to good music and the shit I'm listening on your radio is garbage not music. It doesn't take talent to spew a bunch of derogatory curse words over and over and I'm not downing all rap. He then said you don't know shit about rap and challenged me to name a rap song l liked. I said Eminem"s Lose Yourself and he said "yeah okay" and got real quiet.

Maybe Joss Stone
joss has the voice, but she's damn near a six footer. teena was only 5 feet tall. critics would be all over details on any movie about teena, as she is one of the few [VERY few] white artists that ever got a 'pass' start to finish from black audiences.

good movie topic though. the rick james years alone would be a wild ride

Every FUCKIN' Time Lady T's Music comes on our piped-in music system at my gig, I get all choked up and shit.
Especially when it's "SQAURE BIZ".
Which still has one of the Greatest Bass Lines in Music.
Youngbloods at My Job laugh whenever I go "Air-Bass" whenever that song pops up
They have No Clue.

And a lot of these "Psuedo-Pro Black" folks have No Clue Either.
Calling Lady T a "Cultural Appropriator" and shit.
So Yeah. I tend to get into a lot of arguments.
That Woman NEVER EVER gave up on Her Black Audience.
That's why many of US practically cried when She passed.

I remember a story of her an rock James fighting behind the stage..cussing an about to throw blows..then they hit the stage to sing "fire and desire" and it was love at first sight for them fools...
they have to be one of the best duos to do ot

Since it's R&B, no one says she only hyped up because she's white, like they do with Eminem in rap.
