Music: Teena Marie didn’t play no games on that stage

I saw her in concert at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis.
Didn't go, but I remember that vividly. Her show at mississippi nights was being advertised on the radio. I heard, .... "Blue eyed soul".
In my mind, I was like, "WTF"!
For a long while, I thought she was a super light skinned (can pass for white) sista.
In my mind, it was inconceivable, that anyone white can carry that much soul

That white guhl had SOUL! Not the kind you learn, but is ingrained into every pore of your being. Pure, natural talent. I can remember when Wild and Peaceful came out, I was in D.C. visiting my sister and she was playing the album. Was like damn, who is this? Got the album jacket to see and was no picture. Sister said it's this new white girl. Said ain't no damn way a white girl sings like that. Rick found a real special one with her and their chemistry was incredible. Fire and desire is STILL played on quiet storms around the country to this day. Continue to Rest In Peace, Lady T and Slick Rick

Average White Band.
yep.

was having this discussion a while back, there's only four or five that had it like that, and most of them had connections to late 70's early 80's r/b

teena
awb
micheal mcdonald
harry casey [kc & the sunshine band]
jon b

i guess you could put joss stone in there, but i've never really rocked with her music...she came along later

teena still undisputed though

I'd put Bobby Caldwell in that list, too

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE PERFORMERS !!!

I only saw her a few times over a couple decades and each time was spell binding. I saw her at the Cin Music Festival the year before she died and just wow. She didn't close the show, but she was so easily the best that year.

Caucasian all-star line up, right there. Imagine, if you will, they were all on the same bill? Who would be your opening act. Better yet, who would be your closer?
yes!
caldwell over stone if i had to keep it to 5/6...it's a tough call

teena

awb

michael mcdonald

harry casey - kc and the sunshine band

bobby caldwell

jon b

Teena Marie and Prince were my two favorite artists. Hurt my heart when she passed. Took a min to be able to listen to her music again.
Bruh after making this thread, I really got connected to this gal music…
I mean I listened to fire and desire when I was younger but now I can appreciate her gift

You have a top two that is the shit

i think teena would have to close...she's the one that was undisputed

other than that, any order could work...for us old heads though, it would be great to hear those backing bands/horns again from awb and kc...the era of live music

imagine being a shorty, and kc getting played on the radio on the way to school, everybody boppin in the neighborhoods

[this was pre-internet...you couldn't just look somebody up online back then]

imagine then watching soul train on tv one saturday, and kc & the sunshine band comes on...wait...this was a white dude all this time???

there were some confused faces at school that monday, believe that

I always turn up "I Need Your Lovin'" when they play it on Sirius XM's The Groove. I love that they always play the long version, where you hear the bass and horn solo. She did her thing on that song, and that bassline is slammin'!

For me..alternate between solo artist and band. Jon B, opening. Youngest and has the least amount of hits. Second, AWB. Full band. Horn section alone gives them position. Third, Bobby. For the soul. Fourth, K.C for the funk. Felt he never got his true respect. A funky Florida boy. Should be in R&R HOF, in my opinion. Fifth, McDonald. Another soulful dude. Amazing with Doobie Bros., but came into his own solo. He gets you amped and sets the crowd up for the closer, Lady T. Dream lineup. These Gen Z and Millennials have no idea. Live bands, feeding off of each other, with key changes and different inflections, no two concerts the same. EWF was a prime example. Man....reminiscing like hell right now. Too bad we gotta get old, dawg, but dammit, we got the memories.

Best singing white girl EVER
She had soul that ain't never been seen in a cac
She played multiple instruments and wrote ALL her songs too

Welp I know what I will be listening to on my way to work today

Man why y’all bullshitting she laces the hook for “Out on a Limb” it’s not as deep as “Square Biz” but it kinda made me look at the phone to see the song title

Still playing this:
