Successful Black Men in BGOL

i dont know if yall will consider me successful, but heres my testimony - i have no college degree. both 2006 and 2007 were very rough years for me. i took a leap of faith in 2004 from a mediocre clerical job to get into the IT field. i worked supporting apple products for a year, for 12.50/hr until my employer lost the contract. i temp'ed the rest of 2005 and a few months in 06 for no more than 8.75 an hour. an opportunity came up to be trained in .NET programming, unpaid training for about 6 months in 06. after that i worked for the company that trained me for 10.10 an hour until they laid me off a year later. i collected unemployment for 6 months, $540 a month, and started temping again last october for 8.75/hr. the place i was assigned was a small close knit group of very high-income people (they solicit multi-million dollar donations for university of md hospital and medical school). i got in there and every time someone had trouble with their computer, i put on my cape. "no dont call IT let me look at it". word spread, i ended up being their computer god. the big cheese recommended me to the dean, they saw my resume and said i was a perfect fit. now im a programmer and im making masters degree money. i am extremely happy and i feel successful, and thankful that i had sacrificed so much for the field. i hope i can inspire other people, it will get rough in spots and stay your path. especially if it concerns what you love to do

I'm a social worker for the state.

I have a BS in social work and a AA in psychology(which is useless lol but a great help getting my BS)

I'm going back to get my masters and may go to be a dental hygienist because I always wanted to do dentistry and it will only take 2 years.

I'm a youth advocate worker working with at risk kids.

My wifey is a Lawyer and pivotal in the community I think thats a success for me

I started my own business, LLC not just a name. It's a record label; Inflewential Records. I actually started it because I love music and I'm good at it, not to try to get rich putting out bullshit. My music is positive and socially conscious. I realize everybody's calling themselves a label and trying to rap but I produce and rap and love to do it so if a little money is to be made I'm with it.

Wifey and myself are looking to get a couple of bouncy's  shit you can go set it up leave for 4 hours come back break it down and charge $200 i'm all for that shit. Kids go crazy for them :dance:

Bruh,

You better believe that is a success story. Any Black man that can achieve that goal WITHOUT a degree is a poster child of triumph, will, determination, and self-preserverance.

In my work field (financial investigations) I see too many cats (white, Black, Hispanic, Asian, what have you..) jump into the work world with that “smarter than thou” attitude only to be trampled in the short run.

I blame this partially on the state school system, as it appears to not be adequately preparing many of our young men and women for a brutal and biased corporate world (especially in IT). We live in a world where you don’t have to know SHIT about your area of responsibility in order to be an executive (I.E, a financial investigations executive being shifted to an IT executive position) as long as you can inspire and motivate people to achieve objectives on a timeline.

Too often, we train our college students to be workers (bread-winners) and not leaders.

Anyhow, that’s off subject.

Yours is success story, and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Peace

Came to the US from the Dutch speaking South-American country Suriname.
Finished high school with honors ( National Honor Society member :) )
Attended Queens Borough Community college after my parents could not afford to pay my tuition at Johnson & Wales University in RI where I had gotten accepted.
I didn't know much about scholarships and such because I only did 2 years of High school here.

Dropped out of Queens Borough CC and started working at a plumbing supply for the wealthiest black man in Queens, NY.

I think that's where something hit me and I wanted to do my own thing and become a successful black man also.

I started getting into Computers and stuff.
I created Studio718.com, created a few websites but that didn't go too well.
Fixed a few pc's for people and that's how I made money for a while.

After working at various plumbing supplies I got me a job at JFK working for Forward Air Inc.
That's when I got into the whole freight business.
I wanted to become an owner operator, but not be away from home for days/weeks.

Networked on the job but then I got fired for defending myself.
Worked as a helper for a delivery service when I met some of the people I had networked with during my stint at Forward Air.

Bought my first van 2 years ago. a 1998 Chevy Express Van 2500.
started Small Business Express, a small courier and expedited service in NY.
Today I own two vans and next week I am adding a 07 Sprinter :)
I am currently trying to become a freight broker and possibly a forwarder soon.
You will see my Last name on many Trucks, vans and Trailers all over USA.

I am still going to go back to school and finish my computer engineering degree and take up architecture, because I know how to draw my ass off.

I also still have the Love for computers in my and will read all these books I've bought over the years that are just taking up space in my room.
Create a program or two.

As a black woman, I am so proud, and damn near misty eyed because even though I didn't know this about some of you, it shows here on this board.

Keep doing you.

Comp science major that dropped out due to the birth of my daughter.

Worked technical support for Sprint and worked my way up.

Essentially became a slave for the company, writing curriculum, training their employees, beta testing software and creating tutorials for Sprints' products.

Learned a lot though.

Moved to Atlanta to help a family member launch a product.

Now currently working on a web based idea that I have.

I'm currently on the 9th page of Google:dance: for a phrase that has over 16 million results.

Within 6 months I will be on the first page of Google for this phrase.

I plan on helping others do the same thing.

I still work for Sprint but i'm in a completely different role where I'm not expected to be a slave.

Money is what you would expect from a job (45ish).

I plan on going back to school to complete my degree.

My biggest accomplishment to date has to be raising my five year old little girl (she also has a web page and I plan on trade marking the name of it).

Any success stories in the film business. Trying to get into the writing business and possibly future directing black film's. Currently trying to start up something with a current actor who's been in small roles in Player's Club, American History X and other's. It will happen. I won't quit.

I graduated from The School of Hard Knox...

Right now I want to start a non profit 501c3 so that I can give back to the community...

I did work a job once back in 1989 as an Electrician, help build the greenline metro in DC, but was not fulfilled.

Raised my children that I have one at Virgina State, One at George Mason, and another at South Carolina State...One left to go in High school...

I've made my share of Dollars, but that doesn't complete me either...

I'm truely at a crises of whats next...

I've travelled and I'm bored of that...

Had women..lots...I'll pay them to leave me alone for the most part..

I have 4 personal vehicles...20 fleet vehicles for my company..But about to close for the sake of gas prices...

I have every item on the market and have 2 and 3 sets of almost everything
5 laptops that just sit in closets ...3 computers only use 1...

I need a new hobby...

I'm bored...not excited about items and things anymore...

Thanxs for listening...

Good idea for a thread. BGOL is good for information besides porn. But, love the flicks to. lol This thread is also good, because it shows that it's rough out there but people are still striving for better.

First college graduate from my family. Have a Bachelors in Finance.

Owner of two businesses.
1st Business: I have with two business partners. We host amateur sporting events all over the US. Have been in business about 4 years. Love kicking the ass of our two biggest competitors who happen to be Caucasian. Not a big issue that they are white, but they both dismissed us and said we would be out of business in 6 months and just laughed at us. We are now the largest in our industry in under 4 years when our biggest competitor has been around for 20 years.

2nd Business: Bought a recruiting franchise. I do IT recruiting as well as Diversity recruiting. My goal for this business is to really set it up as a family business where I can teach and train family members to come in and work the business to be self sufficient.

my story

won a full scholarship for all 4 years that paid for everything in undergrad

graduated with a B.S.in computer science

received my MBA in management information systems

currently working as a project coordinator for a software company that makes one step solution software for independent schools in the U.S.

side gig i do some photography

moved into my own place in the suburbs

do my thing with my 401k and mutual funds

i also work with some ppl who i went to high school with and/or undergrad who are now all professionals like myself and we do high school visits and talk to the minority youth about striving for higher education

As stated previously, graduated high school 2 weeks after turning 16 (bunch of honors and advanced classes). Almost flunked out of undergrad, then got straight A's to avoid that bullshit from happening again.

Dropped out of law school after 2 years (next to last in my class and couldn't find a summer job). Temp paralegal for awhile. I'm spiritual.

Something told me to take a job that paid $20K less per year as a paralegal by being permanent instead of temp. Didn't actually work, they paid me to sit around and chill. I started selling real estate part time. Told partners in the lawfirm that I was capable of so much more. They gave me more responsibilities.

Invested exes salary and turned $25K into $100K in one year then bought a brownstone in Harlem. Later sold same brownstone for $1M profit in 4.5 years. Owned properties (rental) in 3 states at the same time.

Told by partner in lawfirm that in NY only need 1 year of law school to take bar with law firm experience. (working for the firm all those years gave me the experience...good thing I worked for that firm instead of temping).

Scored in the top 10% in the country on the multistate portion of the bar. Figured out cases that other people in the firm could not figure out. Thought of cases that made tens of millions of dollars. Made the Wall Street Journal this summer. Mentor law students now. Working on getting my own clients...so much money in referrals. Holla if you need help with a legal issue.

I'm an Editor. Just found something I like doing and built upon that. Just accidentally became a writer with an idea....didn't know I actually had that skill...so much so that my first show out of the box is in option. Just wrote a treatment for my next show.

Masters in Accouting, finishing up my CPA license. Applying to Emory B school next year. Home owner in Fairburn Georgia. Truly blessed. Looking to join the Urban League.

Now this is what I like to see, it's inspirational! Hey brotha, I obtained my bachelor in accounting from Howard, and I just moved to the Fairburn area. I'm on the job hunt in Atlanta, and I wanted to know if you knew of any organizations who are looking for entry level positions? I'm trying on my end, but the search has been slow so far.

love me a strong supportive black woman

Great thread brothas,

I graduated from Alabama State in Montgomery in 2002 (Hornets in the bitch)
then went back home to Cali and got my masters in Black studies at UC Davis, after that I subbed at a few elementary schools, then finally taught my own 6th grade class... after that year I decided to pursue my passion for writing and became a full time spoken word artist... at first it was hard just going from city to city featuring at local open mics, but once I got better known I started doing colleges and traveling overseas... I made my dream happen... of course I always had a natural ability to public speak but I had to supplement my talent with hard work practice and determination... young brothas reading if you have a gift dont be satisfied with what ur born with... work hard like you dont have the talent.. always remember Michael Jordan would have just been Kendell Gill if he didnt supplement his god given abilities.. hard work is needed if u wanna make an impression in this world...

Also I would say take inventory of ya gifts an pick one thing to pursue... one of the problems with my generation is that we spread ourselves too wide... wanna do 5 things at once.. while this is cool for some folks, I rather master 1 thing then to be good or ok at 10... we need masters...

lets step it up...

Respect fam

:yes::yes::yes:
Thats great advice brotha!!!

I have a B.A. in Psychology from an HBCU
A Masters in a specialized area of Psychology from an Ivy

(Just a warning to you college guys...A masters degree won't really help you and may in fact hinder you in the real world if you don't have any job experience behind you; something I learned the hard way...)

My main job is Global HR for a certain corp.

I have a small web development/project management company that I'm trying to get incorporated (website under construction), and a black gaming website I'm attempting to get off the ground. (theblackgamer.ning.com)

I also build custom computers (self taught) as well as perform a fair amount of repair and software loading. TigerDirect.com is my best friend for this work.

I'm a classically trained concert singer which is the thing that I'm most passionate about and have a real talent for...
For a young guy, I'm fairly busy...

That sounds like a success story to me, and you don't have to worry about paying back college loans!:lol::lol:

I'm a youth advocate worker working with at risk kids.

My wifey is a Lawyer and pivotal in the community I think thats a success for me

My dude, just go to dental school. There aren't nearly enough dentists in the US, let alone black dentists. Baby boomer dentists gonna be retiring like crazy and over the next 15 years there's about to be a shortage like you wouldn't believe (less than 58 dental schools in the country). Why not sacrifice the extra 2 yrs. of school and instead of pulling down 40-80K doing cleanings, pull 120-250K hiring somebody else to? I know cats out here doing general dentistry making half-a-million working 4 days a week. I don't need to know anything else after that. Me and my wife graduate dental school in May. Please believe most of my homies from undergrad (shoutout to Tennessee State University) could do this if they wanted but probably think it's too hard or too much of a time constraint. :smh: In 365 days I'll be out earning all of them. In 5 years I'll out-earn all of them combined. Just saying, think about it.

Went to a terrible inner New York City public high school, but graduated as valedictorian.

I went on to an Ivy League institution where I got my B.S. in Urban Planning and Design. I stayed another and for a masters degree in the same field. Within those five years, I did a lot of traveling. Now, I am working on my thesis that is based in Jamaica.

So close to that diploma, I can almost smell it!

Speak!

I have been;

JA Volunteer

Speaker in niieghborhood community centers

On the street with a "Thug", working directly to bring him up from hell

Dad that once had "bucks", but now have access to kids [no matter what I've faced that wanted to interrupt that].

Had expensive toys that others admired

Suit and tie since I was 19, dropped the suit when it threatened my family.

Have kids in college with open eyes and minds.

Have repeatedly taken on battles with large entities on issues of integrity and opportunity for peers and subordinates.

I haven't earned 6 figures or traveled the world, but I've taken on the world in support of those around me without regard to the cost by any measure.

I've also educated any and all who will listen when I've seen the opportunity to aid someone with knowledge I've acquired that I believe they should have.

I agree with TRUFICTION,
I'm not sure what you call "success"

...but I don't measure mine by gold or gadgets.

Just graduated from college w/ a Communications degree (first man in the family to ever go to college)...I graduated in May, but didn't have a job waiting for me. I moved back in w/ my parents over the summer and worked at an amusement park 30 min from my house for $7.50/hr. My school is just outside of DC, but my parents live about 2 hours away. I constantly drove to DC and back for interviews during the summer, but no go. Finally, I landed a job in the marketing department of one of the most prestigious accounting firms in the world a few weeks ago.

Right now, I'm looking to find some volunteer programs in the DC area specifically working with young black boys. Any BGOL heads in the DMV know of anything?

I guess I'm OK.

I made a couple of hit records

I mentored a lot of brothers in the industry.

I basically quit the industry to take care of my Father, My moms when she got cancer and my sister when she broke her back.

I went back to school to finish my degree and will go for a masters later.

Right now I'm climbing the ladder in my filed and hopefully I will be able to bring a few younger cats into the industry.

I haven't done everything I need to do. I was trying to start an afterschool music program in the hood, but I have to get back to cali to help getting it set up.

work looks nice TRU might have to cop some of that when i get back to the states.

Anyway ima keep it 100 im just finding out what i wanna do in life im a photoshop addict so now im pursing a degree in graphic design. Once i finish that i also wanna get a degree in web design. If i can give any advice for you guys with kids man just support whatever it is they like to do. When i was coming up thats all I did was draw but i constantly was criticized for it. I think thats why for the longest i really didnt know what i wanted to do. I was in college just bullshitting because i thought thats what i was suppose to be doing once i graduated. My heart wasnt into it because i really didnt know what i wanted to do with myself. Now that i know what i want im making steps towards making it a reality. I never had shit handed to me i know with me working and supporting myself its not going to be a easy task but im up for the challenge.

Good thread its some really smart brothers n sisters on BGOL

I grew up with money.

My parents, grandparents and great grandparents on both sides of my family all did well for themselves. I took all AP classes in an elite high school and graduated a year early. I went to a good undergraduate school and an even better graduate school getting an MBA in Corporate Finance. When I came out of college I worked for a bank making a high 5 figure salary at the age of 23. But I wasn't happy, got migraines all the time, met some people whose head I wanted to shove in a garbage disposal and flip the switch and I hate wearing suits. (always have, don't know why)

So I went back to school and got another M.A. in Early Childhood Intervention. Now I work as a teacher in a public school for children, black, white and any other race; I don't discriminate, who have behavioral and cognitive disabilities. I took a $40k pay cut to take this job, but the satisfaction at the end of the day cannot have a price tag put on it.

Here's my story!

Grew up middle class in a very nice home; like all things we had our good days and our bad!

Went a good high school; my dad died in his sleep when I was 14; my mom was a house wife and after a few years she had to go find work to support us cause things started to get tough!

There were 2 of us boys; so we all started to pull our way in the early statges to take the burden of my mom, so me and my bro. started planting the land and selling in the market while in school. We sacificed a great deal.

I gave up University for my lil bro to go. he's now one of the most sought after engineers in the oil industry and travels the world working for several companies. I helped my mom go back to school too and now she's a marketing manager in a big company and also she's teaches for the goverment on evenings.

After sacrificing my university eduation I made a few mistakes; i was involved in crime (fraud) was one of the most wanted in the banking sector; only way for them to keep me back was a consipracy case..(CASE DISMISSED)....the day they brought me at my home to do a search and seize all my equitment and i saw my mom;s and bro's face I stoped after that. The Bankers Association of my country made me a Job offer to work for them as a Fraud Investigator, but that wasn't me. I just channeled my energy else where and opened a financial forensic company. Got fed up of it and sold the company i still consult for them and own 40% shares. i've invested in diffrent ventures and own several sort after propertes in my country and I've started a Charity Foundation called EXPERIENCES.

But under all of that; what really matters to me is that ive become a very humble and mature individual in many ways and my experiences have allowed me the opportunity to meet people from diffrent walks of life; that i don't regret.

I've enrolled back in school and I'm currently studying to bcome a business lawyer.

We have to link up Brethren.........

I hope we are seeing that there are more people who are doing positive things and contributing etc that we think.

The key just might be networking......

Just a suggestion for peeps.

Join www.linkedin.com, joine a couple of groups and get your networking on with people with similar interests.

Brotha, I define "successful" beyond money or whatever "conventional" definition there is. For the purposes of this thread and personally, I define success as:

the individual's ability to achieve with whatever amount was given to that individual and achieving maturity/rising to challenges along the way. In Christ's parable of "the talents" it wasn't the fact that the servants can double their Master's money. What blessed them was the fact that they ACTED on their talents instead of just burying it. The same truth applies here--success isn't measured in just conventional means but also in the stories of growth, sincere effort, maturity, and moments of clarity resulting in deeper personal contentment. Those aspects of success TRANSCEND mere money/fame/status.

I find all those aspects inspiring. Beyond mere money or fame, the true measure of a man is how much he gives back, the example he sets, his ability to let his own dreams and aspirations pervade others and LIFT OTHERS UP.

Keep on keepin' on, mah bruhs. Keep inspiring us with your personal stories--we all may come from different directions, but we're all unified from the same shared culture and destiny.
