I don't think Doggystyle gets its due.
THE GREATEST HIP HOP ALBUM OF ALL TIME?????? THREAD STARTER NEED THE PISS SLAPPED OUT OF HIS MOUTH. LET ME TELL YOU, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON IS WHAT DESTROYED THE LAST BLACK REVOLUTION IN AMERICA. BLACK YOUTH HAD STARTED TO PICK UP THEIR CULTURE AGAIN DURING THE LATE 80S, AND NWA USHURED IN GANGSTA RAP AND DRUG DEALING, AND THAT WAS A WRAP FOR BLACK CULTURE. THATS THE CLAIM OF FAME FOR THAT ALBUM. NOW, THE GREATEST HIP HOP ALBUM OF OF TIME, AND IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME, IS THIS BELOW:

believe it or not this album put rap on the world map

mtv and cable put rap on the world map way before hammer.
Yall must be too young to have heard Criminal Minded. I bet Cube was listening to that when he wrote Straight Outta Compton.

Why is it that A Tribe Called Quest is never mentioned in this discussion?
Their 1st three albums compete with anyone on any list, even beyond rap.
I agree with your premise. But, for those same reasons, I will say that Doggystyle is the greatest rap album ever. Every song is great. It was incredible critically and commercially. Musically, it had a sound that has never been duplicated since. It isn't the most "lyrical", but damn Snoop rode those beats so well. I don't think Doggystyle gets its due.
Criminal Minded was just as groundbreaking, but it didn't have the same impact as S.O.C. Mos def in the top 10. I was more a fan of By any means... though. That's when KRS became KRS.
I may be a superior album, song for song, but "Straight Outta..." opens the door for a "Doggystyle" and "The Chronic".
I wouldn't even go as far as calling it a superior album. I think SOC has reached a status where heads don't even listen to it anymore, just remember the videos and the big records on it. I suggest people go back and listen to the album all the way through, with new ears, then come back and comment.
First, because you quoted me, I saw I needed to make a correction. Thanks.
I'm not saying "Doggystyle" is a superior album but that argument can be made. I will take your advice and check out "Straight Outta..." again before I say which is better.
I'll do the same with Doggystyle, because after I made that last comment, I thought to myself that the same thing could be said about me and Doggystyle.

I hadn't heard the entire "Doggystyle" album in a minute but my brother made me a mix cd that had "Gs Up, Hoes Down" on it and when it went off and "Pump Pump" didn't come on, I nearly went crazy. So he had to make me a whole other one to make sure I had that song.
That's funny. I can't stand Pump Pump to this day only because on the re-presses, the Sam Snead interlude led into that song instead of G'z up Hoez Down which was taken off of the CD copies. I almost Cleo'd the first Doggystyle CD I copped for that very reason. Makes me angry just thinking about it.![]()

real talk.
if you have an infant or toddler, and if they are crying or whining, put in "Easy Duz It," or any album featuring Eazy's voice.
kids and babies LOVE dat nicca's voice... they will smile and/or stop crying.
bet.
My personal favorite is Illmatic, but when you consider the music that came before it, and the influence that the album had on every hip hop song/album after it, regardless of region, how can it not be? It blew open what was acceptable as far as language/content in hip hop music, and the production on the album was light years ahead of anything made in hip hop up until that point. If you don't agree, go back and listen to every hip hop album made prior to and during 1988.
It influenced the style of every single hip hop artist that came after it's release, from Snoop to Nas to Biggie to Scarface (Geto Boys) to Outkast and Wu-Tang. I strongly believe that the only reason that it isn't widely held at that lofty position is because most critics are East Coast biased (and I'm from the East Coast) and most publications can't bring themselves to give the highest honor to a group not from NY. When taken into it's proper context, I don't feel that there is a hip hop album that comes close.![]()
