Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (Mad Men) : The discussion

I can't believe Double D is so damaged by his missing mother he keeps searching out for the same woman...growing up with whores and constantly trying to save damaged women.

Lets get that million dollars out the way...

that scene was acted so damn perfectly it really made me appreciate her acting. She just was basically called a whore by Harry...a bad one at that. And by the way he was actually right about EVERYTHING he said concerning her career (who by the way bad mouthed DD then ran back quick fast lying to cover his ass) and also called a whore by her god fearing judgmental sister and basket case of a mother.

And Meghan said EVERYTHING Roger said she would at the lawyer's office ("consumer")

Don really doesn't WANT all this. He wants to win he wants to be a good man and a hero and to be loved and to be himself and accepted.

He gave her the money, because he really DID feel like it was all his fault (it wasn't) and she took it. And the IMMEDIATE change in her demeanor was so well done, now with that money she felt confident free and secure and independent...ironically because DD essentially GAVE it to her.

And I think this is attached to how Joan RAN to Don for help (after essentially hating and blaming him (with just cause) for almost ruining her windfall. In crisis she still came to him for guidance and help.

sidebar: I always had problems with that development...I completely understand the WHY but emotionally I thought their bond was stronger then that.

in the elevator scene...back in the day the old Joan heard all that and worse and used it to her advantage. But Peggy been there to but the difference is DD built her to be so secure in her talent she could always go back to be SMARTER then those men.

I think Joan feels like now she has ALREADY proven it...it hasn't come to the realization that it never ends.

Peggy is so damn stiff and repressed., she HAS to establish her dominance her position her superiority and if not she has to ruin others happiness...we will NEVER know the amount of emotional pressure being held in that pipe.
Whenever she acts like that I remember the movie theater hand job.

the symbolism of Don's empty apt...and the fact that is was Roger that essentially allowed it to happen.

wonder if that check will clear?

How will Meghan react to her Mom if THAT makes DD reconsider his generosity?

sidebar: they really aint gonna make that bitch into a psychologist right?

I missed this show so much, I am still pissed about the entirely unnecessarily long hiatus with this half season nonsense.

I love this damn show and am frustrated at the same time cause damn sometimes they can be so depressing and redemption isn't ever in sight...

Saying all that...i missed this show its some of the BEST TV ever.

Your analysis of Mad Men is always spot on -

1) Don is human - he is dealing with his inner child that feels abandoned by his birth mother and his father and then being raised in hostile territory. He is looking for something that is not achievable by anyone but himself and that is understanding that nothing that happen to him as a kid is his fault. But maybe when Betty gets her Psy Degree - he get can on the couch and she can give him the therapy he needs (that is if they can refrain from fucking on that couch).

2)Peggy is an outlier - she was a high school graduate that worked her way out of the secretarial pool in 1963 and become a Jr copywriter and because Don saw her talent he mentored her to becoming a creative force. But she didnt go to college, she is naturally smart but i think she always feel that if she keeps it together - buttoned up and proper, that she can keep this ride going. She loosens up with Stan and those people below her but the ones above Peggy is very well Peggy - except for Don - because they have both seen each other at there lowest.

2) Hey, bottomline is this EVERYONE knows Joan fucked for her spot and they are not going to respect her. She gets the work done but little innuendos (and not so little ones) are tossed her way. However, she is a partner at the firm, not just any account executive and I think she should have told those executives at the bigger firm to shove the bullshit up there ass- I think she has to own her power no matter how she got it.

3) Meghan is a spoiled child - she moved from her daddy who indulged her to Don who did the same and now she throws a little bit of a tantrum and Daddy Don (who she insults about his age) writes his spoiled "daughter" a big check to keep her happy. Meghan is a dime a dozen and Roger hit it right on the nose - even in 2015 there are millions of them preying on Hollywood types and athletes and collecting big checks for doing nothing. Seriously if anyone should get a big check its Betty - she was part of the come-up, she gave him 3 kids and he was on a serious roll of cheating when they should have been the loving couple.

But Everyone hates Betty - most people forget that she didnt even take alimony of child support from Don when they divorced. I was a Meghan supporter until last episode taking the million dollar check was bullshit.

By the way like you, I love this show for the nuance and the subtleties.

now after all of these years I now realize that Mad Men was just Matt Weiner's long term master plan to have his son play the next Wolverine.

This kid is the worst actor. Incredibly wooden. Only reason he has the role is because no one wants to tell Matt Weiner his son sucks as an actor.

this was a very interesting episode

should have been called arrested development.

Everyone is a damn child...Joan, Peggy, Pete, Betty, the ad guy and even the children reverted back to their worst immature states when TRYING to act like adults.

but interestingly like I mentioned last episode DD is being the DAD

liked how they showed Roger has to WORK now, the grey hair mustache he is getting older and is starting to take things seriously. But he STILL Roger at heart.

Peg and Pete are still the same petulant children they were the first season.

Yelling an screaming about getting their way and always seeking Don's approval no matter how much success they achieve on their own.

Loved when Pete said "I could fire YOU!" and Peggy expression.

Damn I swear this show should pay the actress that plays her extra because that permanent sour face is leaving damn marks on her face.

she is a wonderful actress it a great performance but she getting to be exhausting. We ALL KNOW people just like Peggy, they want things on THEIR terms they want you tell them what THEY want to hear, they are never happy always seeking acceptance and resent it when you DO give it because it isn't EXACTLY given in the way they dreamed it to be.

No need to even go into Pete analysis.

Chough is a damn broken man. He was a dreamer an adventurer a father a friend a creative genius and now?

He sits in his office trapped by his poor decisions and taking even a doughnut as a small victory of the day.

Joan Joan Joan....

how you tell your kid he's ruining your life.

She don't know what she wants...and hates Peggy because it APPEARS she does. And men respect Peg on her talent and skill not her boobs.

I love how she thought things would be so different on the West Coast but its the same thing the men come and go as they please and have all the power. She wants to be a man so much in the sense she was power money influence sexual freedom but she can't.

Like how she ordered a MAN'S BREAKFAST...

and then added the french toast.

I hope this all works out...funny I she still needs a man though to find happiness.

Lou still dreaming of cartoons...child's play

OK Betty at least aint a stone cold freak.

Glenn PRETENDING to be grown drinking beer but peeing his pants when the time came.

If they had shown they slept together it wouldn't have been a surprise but it would have truly made her character irredeemable.

She turned right back into the WORST Betty when she first saw that kid the manipulate immature blonde. And I feel like he didn't REALLY join the army for her. He TOLD her that to sleep with her. He joined the army so he wouldn't be kicked out plain and simple.

In the end Sally was the only one who really acted their age...but STILL much like her mom was a damn disappointment.

Sally friend was PRETENDING to be grown and DD immediately warned Sally that she will end up in ruin and don't imitate her.

After everything her father did to tell her and show her the truth all the work he has done to be a better man and father in her eyes she let her anger about the boy going to Vietnam and her mom and her friends ...

cause her to lash out at her Dad.

And her Dad told her the cold hard truth...she aint perfect either.

and HER future (which everyone was thinking about this entire episode) is still open.

And that ad guy?

a f*cking child. Can't control himself stomping his feet screaming buying gifts to kiss up a tantrum cursing washing his mouth with soap he makes a mistakes and blames everyone ELSE except himself.

I liked the story line because it really reminded everyone that forgot about the lies women smoking and drinking...Don Draper was and is one HELL of an ad man.

You can try to do what he does but you can't and it has nothing to do with handsome (although it helps) he is just BETTER then you. And he would tell Sally the same.

It was good for Don to here that he IS good...he is trying and succeeding (baby steps) to be better.

Seeing that young couple that reminded him of a young Don & Betty moving in and kicked him in the teeth.

Change is tough.

Not easy being a grown up.

There were absolutely NO surprises but it was the most "Mad Men" episode so far.

YOU HIT RIGHT ON THE HEAD!!!

especially this episode.

What I like about this half season is that Matt Weiner has for the last 7 years been hearing people talk about his characters, Don, Betty, Peggy, Pete Joan and Roger (as well as ancillary characters like Meghan, Sally, Ted et al.), but now he is basically trolling by laying out in stark relief - WHO EVERYBODY IS -

1) Don - Vain and Broken

2) Betty - Vain and insecure ( "I am smart, I speak Italian")

3) Peggy - Ambitious but Scared and a Hopeless (and hopeful) Romantic

4) Joan - Aging Ingenue who is not insecure as she is realistic of her prospective and her situation which she hates and havent been properly equipped to handle it ( her mother raised her to be beautiful and arm candy )

5) Roger - Aint shit changed - he took LSD and came out the other side the same Prep school rich kid - he probably is the most secure, complete of the whole crew

i wonder if there were will be some disco songs in the series finale(since the last half hour is rumored to be a time jump to the mid 70s)

“it’s the beginning of something! not the end!”

Seems unlike many...

I found this episode funny as hell and liked it.

I understand there was some unnecessary bullshit sprinkled throughout (which at his point in the game you can't have) but I like it.

Don at the window shaking it loose hearing the whistling wind I hope Weiner is just playing cause that is one hell of a messed up foreshadow

if he is in a wheelchair he shouldn't be allowed to make that reference.

from now on no one comes between me and your business

:lol::lol::lol:

Joan and Peggy hate him but at the first sign of trouble run to Daddy Don

Joan's face seeing Don in that elevator...

this goes back to last season when I told ya'll I didn't like her hating on Don when he has done NOTHING but support her (and Peg) again I understand but I don't like it.

The black secretary....

basically let roger know the real and I love the contrast on how the Black woman knows the game and just plays it to win knowing she aint gonna change these white people's minds. And making sure to do what's best for her and her family.

how Joan refuses to accept the reality of her situation and that white woman entitlement lingers no matter how many times these cacs whip their dicks out on her desk.

After all these years and these men Joan is just fed up it seems with the reality of her situation and destiny of being someone's wife and mother.

Which IRONICALLY she would have been quite happy with if Roger had left his wife and married her back in the day.

damn she lost HALF of that money on some bullshit though....

the new boss pretending to be in awe of Don but basically told Ted the same thing.

And his HATRED of Joan. "I bet your the type of GIRL that people always say never takes no for an answer"

that actor delivered that line like he slapped her in an elevator.

that Don Draper impersonation sounded like JFK with Tourettes.

Peggy footsteps matching the organ...classic

Roller Skating...

sunglasses cancer stick on her lips and now she really don't give a damn about nothing.

They BETTER not be suddenly trying to make Betty be smart...conniving vain vindictive self absorbed petty childish immature manipulative yes but an academic? No.

Matt Weiner needs to chill with all this post Sopranos ducks in the pool visions existential stuff. We gonna got like 2 episodes left homeboy you already going out your basic pitches...

we waiting for some high heat.

Don wants to save them all and now has a daughter who doesn't need a man for nothing.

The life Don stole thinking it was so valuable and the end all be all....is the same life he has now been constantly running away from.

thanks fam...

but its sad that because they dragged out this last season, they aren't getting the love they deserve.

There is not an episode this season I did not love - this season is Mad Men - plain and simple - Weiner has funny episodes, deep episodes, boring episodes and touching episodes - he even uses drugs to get trippy episodes but at the end of the day they are all Mad Men episodes.

Remember this is long form story telling with a beginning, middle and end, think Godfather (I and II). Michael sitting alone in a room having lost all his family through his action and that of others. There was no need for Godfather III - we knew all we needed about Michael Corleone. the same will be true for Don Draper, Peggy, and Pete. That is the core - Joan and Roger wasn't the core even though they were important - Go back to Burger Chef episode - that is the core of the story.

Anyway, I have no idea how Weiner is going to end it but Hobo Don is becoming more and more likely (with a few million in the bank).

Don't give a fuck. The show has the praise critically (It has the hardware: multiple Emmy's wins for best drama and wins/nominations for damn near all it's core cast), and publicly (Hell, your well written posts alone fam) that has already cemented itself as one of the best television shows ever and arguably the best show on how one deals with the classic tragic duality of not getting what you want and getting exactly what you want.

"What is happiness? It's the moment before you need more happiness."- Don Draper.

If that isn't a diamond the size of a baseball atop the war chest of gems this show dropped.

Every episode I watch three times, one cold, the other as a critique as how it relates to the ethos of the series, and lastly for nuggets of truth.

MadMen will be missed.

that would be an interesting ending... Don becomes the traveling man... a wealthy vagrant, maybe even small time philanthropist

I cannot argue one point you made.

I love this damn show and all the frustrations are what makes me going to miss it more.

One of the few shows I watch twice and actually TALK to the screen

I KNOW these people...I may not like them but I have grown to know them...

the recidivism thing is getting frustrating but I think your right that you have to take it ALL into the larger story.

But that nod to the audience with the lose window....

got me shook.

Weiner does not end the episode with out the end song being significant to the character that the episode ends on - Playing Space Oddity was a tonal and significant shift for (Major)Don -

:bravo:

great words...

I remember I paused the dvr after that line.

It haunted me for days after.

sidebar: the expression on Don's face when he say that diamond ring in the envelope.

They BETTER not make him marry that blonde secretary.

There isn't a wasted moment or scene EVERYTHING connects to everything.

And they are so damn HUMAN it kills me REAL people don't always listen grow mature and empathize with others...and I think that is the dding line between real fans of the show. We accept these characters as people warts and all. And identify with them.

to go ALL THE WAY BACK to reference the hippie Jack Kourac stuff in the car?

This muthafuka had Peggy rollerskating in the empty offices accompanied by roger playing the organ...

WinTentireF??? was THAT???

What other show would even ATTEMPT that let along pull it off.

If you DIDN'T know about the burden Peg carries every single day pretty much from her mother till now NEVER being unyoked till she met Don and Roger's issues with HIS own mother and with responsibility acid trips his daughter his wives....and now transitioning into this great unknown

that sh*t actually made sense!

AMC's sister networks to black out programming during Mad Men season finale

All eyes will be on AMC Sunday night as the network airs Mad Men’s series finale. To make sure of it, AMC’s sister networks (BBC America, IFC, Sundance and WE) will suspend regular programing for an hour beginning at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, instead sharing a special message commemorating Mad Men, the network announced Tuesday.

AMC will also celebrate the end of the show’s eight-year run by airing a marathon of every episode starting at 6 p.m. ET Wednesday night.

“Turning AMC over to Mad Men and airing every episode of every season as a lead-in to the finale on Sunday seems a fitting way to continue celebrating what this series has meant to the fans, to television and to our network,” said AMC President Charlie Collier in a statement. “We are also enormously appreciative of our sister networks who are paying tribute to this remarkable program that has had such an impact on our entire company.”
