Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (Mad Men) : The discussion

I don't have anything to add. I just want to bump this because all the posts are pretty good.

I am enjoying the season, but I like reading the criticisms.

Peace.

:lol::lol::lol: they should this after mad men is over!!:D

assuming the final scene of MM's last episode is at a New Years Eve party and they getting ready to ring in 1970..

IMO - tonight's episode set up the splitting up or even the collapse of SCDP

shit is going to be ugly

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

all that tripedation and tension. everyone walking on eggshells, don being geniunely confused and taken aback by his reception. Them taking away all his toys and demoting him

his response a non-chanlant OK

funniest thing i've seen in years.

and oh Lou aint long for that world. He aint a creative heading up creative with the goat 'reporting' to him.

and god damn i cant stand Betty. Its to the point where i damn near hate January Jones.

Shit is getting good....Lou needs to get the hell on. When all is said and Don...I mean Don, Draper gonna run his own shit.

oh I already hate January - she's horrible in every roll I've seen her play... she's only tolerable in non speaking roles...

did anyone peep when Harry Hamill basically said he wants a non creative ad agency?
That shit plus last weeks shit with Pete? with Don being back - that place is about to go down...

I wish that Don had demanded they buy him out instead of reinstating him

yeah, that scene bothered me. w/ Megan cutting him off & the office looking at him like he has leprosy, not to mention that kick to the balls Peggy gave him it's like he just wants to be a part of something. this season is gonna force him to either succeed like a boss or fail terribly.

Man this whole episode bothered me.

From his wife's reaction to him to how he was treated when he returned to the office, especially by Peggy, was completely fucked up.

I know Don fucked up in the past in terms of business but duke didnt deserve that.

When they made him that offer I was hoping he'd tell them no, make them buy him out and take the other offer at the other agency.

I guess this is to show that Don is really repentant and therefore willing to accept these slights because he feels he deserves it and because he wants to redeem himself.

Still very hard to watch. I can't wait for the tables to turn.

He probably would have been better off just trying to be assigned to their offices in L.A.

Lou would be fired if Don was fully reinstated... and even though they say Don will be reporting to Lou - he is a partner and a superstar - while Lou is an employee and only a boss as long as Don keeps playing along with the other partners - very dangerous ground for Lou...

I get the feeling the partners are about to learn the same lesson Pete learned...
Don will reinvent himself and isn't scared to go back to 0 and start over

Don's being a partner means nothing after agreeing to their terms. The moment he even fucks up a little they can just take his partnership.

Also this Don is different from the Don that went head to head with Pete.

I think Don is through with running and reinventing himself.

I don't think he's ready to go back to that or go back to living a lie.

If he truly didnt care about starting over he would have told them no, made them buy him out and then started over at another agency.

I think Don is attached to and needs the love and approval of the people at that agency. He needs to be redeemed in tbeir eyes.

OK?

OK?

Fuck them Don - you are the metaphorically the cutest girl on the block - walk away and go to a bigger baddest Creative Director in the City -

Fuck them

oh and I am still hating Peggy from last week -

they are setting up a real rift - Jim Cutler is a shark but he doesnt know his ass from his elbow if he thinks that Lou (and Peggy) are going to hold client.

Fuck Joan - when all of the Partners wanted Porky to pork you for a the Jaguar Account - Don was th only one that had your back (and didnt try to fuck you)

Let me be clear - Don is no angel and he has stepped on his dick on multiple occasions but he is repentant to both the agency and to Megan - the only person cutting him slack is Sally now.

FYI - Why hasnt Dawn assigned Don another secretary by now -

But glad to see she has the position with little or no flack (so far).

more later while I take this call from the Wall Street Journal regarding my phantom Computer.

Bob Benson isn't completely gone is he? if not i have a feeling his return is gonna work to Don's advantage.

He's in Detroit, he took over their automotive contract so Pete could go to L.A.

He hasn't been seen on screen yet this season.

Unfortunately the actor who played Bob Benson is a regular on the Robin Williams show that nobody is watching so he is unavailable to be back - though we might get a cameo.

Oh I didn't know that. Good for him. Even if the show eventually gets cancelled thats still more money and exposure than he would have gotten on Mad Men.

Shame that we won't see that character regularly in the last season though.

I've got to disagree... another agency isn't starting over... and starting over isn't the same as running away.
People that hit rock bottom aren't as scared of the unknown or too attached to possessions... so I don't think Don gives a shit about his shares, he has been rich since the acquisition by the British agency and hasn't shown signs of financial pressure even when the firm wasn't making $$, and so far this season he hasn't shown ANY ego or bitterness, having Freddy take all credit for his pitch work for the last 2 or 3 months at his own firm - someone with an ego wouldn't be anonymously doing pitch work for the firm that forced him out.

IMO Don loves the work - both the mass psychology and the creativity.

The partners think using the shares is leverage against him - I M O that's a big mistake if they didn't tack on a +1 yr non compete- and even then I could still see him walking away if only to be free. (remember how he avoided all contracts at first Sterling Cooper, even as creative director, shocking the shit out of Duck, until they made him a partner) Roger summed it up - on top of avoiding the financial hit none of them want Don as competition. And the way tonight's show went...
-Joan and Peggy went out of their way to make him a personal enemy
-Harry Hamlin statement of an agency without creative types,
-most of the partners believed they were firing Don, but forgot about the buyout? that's not a mistake Joan should make

Don is either going to be the competition in his own shop or the firm is headed for a meltdown

Mad this episode had me on the edge of my seat! I'm kinda disappointed in Don for accepting those terms but what else does he have left? Megan is done with him. He's a former shell of himself. He needs to get back to what he knows.

And fuck Joan! That fucking bitch! Fuck Peggy too! She wouldn't be shit if it wasn't for Don! And Betty.... I have nothing to say about that spoiled bitch

I like the way Roger bossed up in that first meeting too!

I have been reading what you guys have written and what others wrote - and then I thought about how Matthew Weiner loves themes - if theme this year is Lost Horizon

lost-horizon.png

lost-horizon-2.png

Shangri-La (and the Garden of Eden and the Golden Age of Men) is a metaphorical state of being, a time when men were in harmony with nature and God and most importantly, themselves. It’s telling that in the story of Lost Horizon, the protagonist, having been brought to paradise, is determined to leave it, only to regret his decision and long to go back.

Don wants to return to his own Shangri-La – if he can figure out if he’s ever been there in the first place. And I think that he is slowly, painfully beginning to realize that what is truly keeping him from achieving inner peace within his own life: what is preventing him from finding bliss with Megan and contentment with his career and satisfaction with simply being Don Draper is the demon of his own alcoholism.

I just went back to watch the episode titled The Wheel from the first season and saw how he killed that pitch for the Kodak Carousel! Then he promoted Peggy right after that! This ungrateful muthafuckas knows Don is a fucking star! Roger knew he didn't want him as competition.

great breakdown but i gotta disagree with the assessment on Joan taking it personal. She has demonstrated that she is proably the most pragmatic amongst the partners. For her its all about doing whats best for her and her son long-term. For all Don's brilliance Joan has been exposed to all his warts. From fucking the secretary a few seasons back to the Hershey pitch Don can be bad for business for all his briallance. No one knows that better than Joan & Roger.

I hate the direction they are taking Peggy but it makes sense. She has a love/hate relationship with Don who made her and he never lets her forget. Lets not act like Don didnt throw cash in her face and basically called her whore when she wants the samething Don seems to want now, appreciation for her great talent outside of straight cash.

Disagree.

the writers are REALLY showing something on how Joan and Peggy are treating him NOW...

Don't forget the pregnancy he supported Peggy through and when they were at he Cleo awards the first year under the table Joan held Roger AND Don's hand...

I could go on.

Hell he treated them BOTH better then his own wives and daughter.

Don didn't JUST support them emotionally he is DIRECTLY responsible for their professional successes.

I understand why the writers have chosen this direction but I don't agree with it because in the end it makes them stereotypical women.

They can't "just take" his partnership without buying his shares. Reabsorption means they are taking them back, but it does not mean they get them for free. Just means that he is expelled from the partnership, which, as we see, means more to him than money.

As for the thrust of what you are saying, i am somewhat stuck between what you are saying and what the Bruh who said he is reinventing himself is saying. I think you are both right, and differ in how to describe it. I'm not sure how to describe it either, but what I do know is that these fools are going to learn the way Pete learned is that Don Draper is hard to kill, and is a stone survivor. I think this shit is going to be fun.
