Surprise! Lucasfilm announced that they’ve been working in secret on a new six-episode animated series titled Tales of the Empire that will start streaming on Disney Plus on May the Fourth, and they’ve done so in a big way.

In addition to the announcement and the first-ever details provided for it, they also dropped a teaser trailer and an official poster. Check them out below

The Disney Plus press release describes it as the “second installment in the Tales series”, which was kicked off with 2022’s Tales of the Jedi featuring shorts centered on Count Dooku and Ahsoka. Dave Filoni is credited as creator and the supervising director. The cast includes Diana Lee Inosanto (Morgan Elsbeth), Meredith Salenger (Barriss Offee), Rya Kihlstedt (Lyn aka Fourth Sister), Wing T. Chao (Wing), Lars Mikkelsen (Thrawn), Jason Isaacs (Grand Inquisitor) and Matthew Wood (General Grievous). Dave Filoni, Carrie Beck, and Athena Yvette Portillo are executive producers.

Tales of the Jedi was announced last year to be returning for a second season, and Disney Plus’ 2024 calendar posted in December confirmed that is still on track. However, we don’t expect that to premiere until the fall.

Synopsis

“Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” is a six-episode journey into the fearsome Galactic Empire through the eyes of two warriors on divergent paths, set during different eras. After losing everything, young Morgan Elsbeth navigates the expanding Imperial world toward a path of vengeance, while former Jedi Barriss Offee does what she must to survive a rapidly changing galaxy. The choices they make will define their destinies.

'Wasn't a Difficult Decision': Daisy Ridley Reveals What Made Her Revisit the Star Wars Universe

Star Wars star Daisy Ridley recalls how she reacted to the Rey film pitch and why, on a professional level, "it's a different thing this time."

Rey Skywalker

Daisy Ridley's returning to Star Wars with a more seasoned outlook this time around. She has shared how it wasn't a hard decision at all, detailing why she was eager to return.

"It wasn't a difficult decision," Ridley told Empire about taking the offer to play Rey Skywalker again while discussing her new biopic movie Young Woman and the Sea. While she "didn't say yes right away" to the solo film, Ridley noted that Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy gave her time to think about it, adding, "It was actually really funny, on the way there [to meet Kennedy], I was on the phone to my best friend and he goes, 'Oh my God, Dais, imagine if they're doing a Rey TV show.' And I was like, 'Nah, we're literally just going for breakfast.' And then I called him and I was like, 'You will never guess what.' Why wouldn't I [do it]?"

Tales of the Empire Could Finally Confirm a Fan Theory About a Star Wars Villain

Star Wars' Tales of the Jedi sequel series, Tales of the Empire, will revisit a key Clone Wars villain and may finally confirm her ultimate fate.

Despite acknowledging how "divisive" the Star Wars sequel trilogy has been amongst fans, Ridley also pointed out that those movies "bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character — like, can I even remember how to play her? It's an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what's changed for her." Maturity also played a role in her decision to return, as when Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens -- Ridley's first major Hollywood project -- came out, Ridley "certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I've had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it's a different thing this time. There's just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn't excited, I wouldn't have done it. It feels like a great thing to be part of."

Ridley's Rey film -- reportedly titled New Jedi Order -- will be helmed by documentary and Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and focus on Rey's attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order sometime after The Rise of Skywalker. Other story details remain unclear, with Ridley acknowledging even she doesn't know whether co-stars like John Boyega will come back for the new Star Wars movie. However, rumors suggest that Lucasfilm is potentially casting a few major roles, including the central villain and two co-leads for Rey to train as apprentices.
