Agreed. Daddy's Little Girls was decent.

I give him that.
(Btw, Jumping the Broom was just mediocre, imo.)
But after 16 stage plays, 14 films and 2 tv series 'in the can'...
Even with his own 'production studio'... you really think Tyler Perry is gonna 'greenlight' tv shows...
- similar to 'ER'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Cheers'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'The X-Files'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Law & Order'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Moonlighting'... but with a black cast?
- or even an 'animated series'... but with a black cast / or black superheroes?
or you think he gonna 'greenlight' major Hollywood movies...
- similar to 'Star Wars'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'The Breakfast Club'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Back to the Future'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Jurassic Park'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'Bourne Identity'... but with a black cast?
- or something like 'The French Connection'... but with a black cast?
C'mon son.
Those types of movies & tv shows are not built on the
"story of redemption, with a touch of gospel + comedy" formula.
Nah, when it comes to filmmaking and tv... that dude has ONE SINGLE lane... and he STAYS in it.
Plus, there's no black women getting (emotionally, or physically) abused in those types of scripts.

So I don't see him changing lanes anytime soon.
He deviated for a hot second with Daddy's Little Girls, but it was still a movie "about redemption" at the end of the day. (So really he only 'swerved' passed 1 or 2 cars before heading back into his 'comfort lane', so to speak.)
In reality, I doubt he could make ANYTHING decent (on his own) that isn't a variation of Madea or 'Meet the Browns'.
Sheeeiiit.... even if he tried to do animation... it would prolly be called:
Meet the 'Toons, or some shit.
So while you think his career is defined by 'being the only black director who can greenlight a project'... I think it is defined by being 'the only black director who can greenlight
THE SAME projects, over & over'.
Hopefully I will live long enough to see another black man who accomplishes what Tyler has done...
but with a much more robust body of work.
And he does it
WITHOUT ever dressing in drag.
Just saying.
