Spider-Man: Homecoming -(discussion thread)

Feig stated that Venom isnt a part of their MCU plans. I think Sony going to see how successful this movie is and try to squeeze their shit in. Fox may come to their senses because of this movie. The darkness dont matter because Marvel did Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage which is in the MCU but a darker side to it.
a Venom character without Spiderman?
in a dark story with no origin, no cinematic setup in another flick or a non Spiderman origin?

That shit won't make Ghostbusters money

hell - it won't even do Pixels' money

worse yet next year is Black Panther, Avengers and Ant Man, followed in 18 by Capt Marvel and Spidey again - never mind Star Wars movies, Avatar, Deadpool, and whatever bullshit Fox pulls out its ass

Sony has to make 2 good movies and find away to punch through the traffic to market them

Unfortunately your right...

But hey if this was NOT in Sony hands...

Why not a suprise hit like Split?

In the right hands, starting in space?

Venom could be a crazy small budget Sci fi horror action flick like that blind Vin diesel movie.

And make someone a star just like that.

- they are creatively bankrupt
both movies could be made under $60 million each and tell good stories, that ain't never happening with Rothan and Pascal...

imo - Split wasn't really a surprise hit to the studio, nor did it have a huge budget...
It was Shyamalan working with a previously successful property and the new script had a "twist" and a reasonable budget its auto greenlit -

It wasn t gonna floo...but it was still a psivilty
I really don't think the unbreakable fans were checking for it before the leak

And the critical response?

I think the execs didn't expect THAT kind of money.

What about the DCEU..in addition to Aquaman they still talking about Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens  plus The Flash(which there still no director for) and The Batman(if they ever get that film off the ground)

only Aquaman is being made - Flash is on the shelf
Its JL then Aquaman because they are already filmed or filming
everything is on the shelf until Batgirl
for now DC is saying no other flick goes into production before Batgirl starts filming- not even Batman

Just got back. Movie was damn good, but differernt. It didn't feel like a large scale movie like the Avengers but a bit larger than the Ant-Man. The VULTURE? Was a COMPLETE BAD-ASS! Michael Keaton did the damn thing. (I'm looking for his action figure online).

The movie was comedy all the way.

I give it a 9/10

This came off as a solid teen movie where the teen just happens to be Spiderman.

There were points in the movie it had a project X feel to it.

Previous spidey movies had a teen to adult responsibilities theme.

This one had a nice kid trying to be grown but realizing 'hey I am still a kid let me enjoy this.'

Initial thoughts on this movie remain the same simply WOW!

Don't forget their one decent offering WW they didn't lock down the director for a sequel :smh:

Exactly! I menotioned this in my forst post too. They put a lot of emphasis on the fact that he's a child with powers which is something I liked. He was still vulnerable like any teenager despite having his powers. The previous movies it was like an adult was playing spiderman.

man, even worse a dark pheonix movie featuring Genosha
sandwiched between Venom and Black & Silver movies
there are still no scripts for Venom or BS - not sure Sony is going to get either movie done in the schedule they said if at all

Hold up they have genosha in Dark Phoenix without any set up... oh hell naw.

No matter what Sony says people associate Venom with Spider-Man... so the problem is that it's going to look weird having a Dark gloomy Venom after this Spider-Man movie.
I love Venom and I'll be the first to see this film but I don't think it's going to do the numbers that it would do if it was part of the MCU or at least appeared that it was part of it. People will be slightly apprehensive of the film and might wait. I think this is a huge mistake for Sony.

I don't see how you can do Venom with a small budget... he is a shape shifting Alien. Shape shifting costs money.

Completely agree... which is what really worked for me. It was an origin story without the origin part which is something you don't really see in movies these days. Even the first Spider-Man had Peter perfectly taking out guys within a few scenes of him getting his powers.

This entire movie was like a coming of age superhero movie... where the guy realizes what his limits are. Like the scene where he was under the rubble. That was a standout scene to me.

The more I think about it... the more I want to tie this with Spider-Man 2 but it's tough because that movie entertained me from start 2 finish and Doctor Octupus was fucking amazing. This film is just slightly below.... I'm talking about a hair below.

And again... that gawd damn AI. That has to be my one of my favorite AI characters. I was not even expecting it and definitely not expecting it to be that good.

Marvel rank I'm going to put this at Number 5..

Winter Solider, Avengers One, Iron Man, Doctor Strange,

This is where you lost me, fam. This is much better than Doc Strange. Hell, I venture to say that this is in the top 3 Marvel films along with Civil War and Avengers One.

What I like most of all what the diverse cast but they weren't minimized to cultural and racial tropes. US productions have a tendency to be that way and I'm glad they did it differently with this film.

The twist with Liz's dad....NO ONE saw that coming. No one.

I loved Zendaya in this, but she was underused IMO. But that's probably because me and the wife like her and wanted to see more of her. I thought Ned would piss me off throughout the film, but he turned out to be pretty solid.

I liked the villain in this. His motivation was clear and it was a reasonable one. I didn't really view him as a "bad" guy. His line, "How do you think Tony Stark built his tower?" was brilliant and I think it landed with the audience.

On another note, I'm glad the stakes weren't too high in this film. People weren't necessarily dying left and right and the fate of the universe wasn't at risk. That can get old sometimes. The wife likes how it was explained to Peter that stopping Toomes was "a little below the Avengers pay-grade" so therefore he felt compelled to catch him so he can prove himself worthy of being part of the team.

Pacing was perfect. No unnecessary lags. This blows the other Spidey movies out the water. I turned to my wife halfway and said, "Man, I love this movie."

10/10

Another thought... this was the first Spider-Man project since Spectacular Spider-Man that really made you question the limits of Spider-man's webbing. I loved that somehow he couldn't reach an object or it wasn't strong enough.

I also loved how it showed how difficult it would be for Spider-Man to have to fit someone in the suburbs. Seeing him running around on the ground looking for objects to swing from was awesome.

I figured Doctor Strange would be the controversial one but Doctor Strangr gave me Iron Man 1 vibes... unlike Spider-Man no one really has put Strange on the big screen before and it was 10/10 for me. Especially when I re-watched it on Netflix and realized how amazing it looks. It's just my opinion.

For a second I had Spider-Man above Doctor Strange but I've seen that movie 10 times now. I can't put spider man over a movie that I continuously watch. But its by a hair... this might change from a rewatch.

There was just some lag in the middle of this film that threw me. Nothing serious but a couple unnecessary scenes.

And that association is warranted. Venom's powers are based on what it absorbed from being bonded to Spider-Man. Without that it's just a regular symbiote looking for a host. It wouldn't even deserve to be called Venom without previously being bonded to Spider-Man.

Another thing I forgot to mention:

Marvel realy "depowered" Spider-Man in this film (i read somewhere that they wanted him to sort of build as he went along) but his power level felt severly lowered.

He was VERY much the street level hero they were going for. I'd say in this film he felt a bit more "higher-grade" street level than Daredevil in strength and ability but still pretty close to a "smaller hero" than a major.

He didn't seem over powered like the other films at all.

Exactly... that's why I don't see how they do this. For a second... I thought that maybe they would make Miles Morales their version of Spider-Man and that way they could still leave the Spider-Man/Venom connection but the Miles Morales animated movie is going to be in the MCU.. so that's out the window.

I just don't understand what they are doing with this. It's like having a movie with Destro but leaving out GI Joe and Cobra Commander... you would just end up with a dude in a metal mask.

Or a Harley Quinn movie without Batman and Joker... you can't have one without the other because the fans aren't stupid. They might watch it but they won't support it.

You would have thought they learned their lesson from Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters is a textbook example of what happens when you insult the fans on these tentpole films.

Venom must have Spider-Man, but Spider-Man doesn't need Venom.

Hell how can you even talk about a Carnage movie without the Spider-Man and Venom connection.

Well consider the strength aspect of his strength is supposed to be the proportionate strength of a spider. Considering he's still a very young teen, he hasn't fully matured yet and as such his powers shouldn't either. I'm fine with this.

I liked the growth over the course of the movie.

He came into his strength as the film progressed, especially shown in the coney Island scene.

I had no issue with that. I was pointing out, that this wasn't a polished-I-can-beat-any-scenerio-Spiderman with Spider-sence and super strength. He felt every bit a cut above human but not overwhelming as the other movies made him seem. He's powerful but not maddening so.

He starts to push himself and his abilities later in the film which I knew they were going for.
