solve: 48/2(9+x)=288

no no no! you seem like you're intelligent so just accept that you are LEARNING something here. this isn't to make you look bad but please pay attention here because we are following order of operations... all of the terms under the division sign are being treated as ONE term BECAUSE the division sign come first NOT in spite of it... until there is a "+" or "-" or parentheses sign between terms under the division symbol all terms thereunder must be treated as ONE. this really isn't that complicated stop ADDING terms to the equation.

I see this has now broken down to a notation argument. The truth is most people use the symbol for division as the same symbol for a fraction. You are right if you consider the equation a fraction with a numerator and a denominator. However if you consider the equation a linear equation than you are wrong order of operation gives it as 288 or x = -8.196

What's actually interesting about this is I don't know if there is a hard rule on what to consider "/" to mean does it simply mean division or does it indicate a horizontal fraction symbol which would imply that the numerator and denominator must be considered separately.

I gave you two answers 48/2(9+x)= 288 x = 3
for 48/2(9+x)=2 x = -8.1967 or - 107/12 I gave you mathematical evidence of this and you laugh at it. I gave you www.mathway.com as an official math site that backs me up so all this distributive property stuff and laughing can't refute my answer. You laugh because you realize you made up a problem that you couldn't solve and realize that I'm right and all you have is that guilty ass laugh. It's cool though I know I'm right no need to admit it though. You can't prove your answers while I can so I'll just bounce.

Common since refutes your answer. Anytime a number is directly in front of (), you have to Simplify before you do a thing. Thats taught in 3rd Grade homey. Everything after that Division symbol is a single expression.

The problem is :

If you want to act like Distributive Property is bullshit, go ahead homes. Im just glad nothing in my life doesnt depends on your math. :smh:

If that is how you are interpreting it that's why we aren't on the same page. This is a linear eqution not a fraction.

You're wrong order of operations read it it deals with parentheses. This was taught after third grade homie.

:hmm:http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=488334:hmm:

48/2(9+x) apparently means this:

48
2(9+x)

EUREKA! you finally got it slick! (pause for irony)

incidentally i was always following order of operations. this math stuff is EXACTLY like reading words. As a matter of fact the problem with ALL of the incorrect answers was math illiteracy.Math is a LANGUAGE. you have to KNOW how to READ it as a starting point before you can SOLVE the problem:yes:

A division sign makes it fraction. Thats what it means you silly motherfucker. Take a long hard look at the symbol. :hmm:

EXACTLY!!!! smack your damn self if you didn't realize this and you have been taking any math that deals with division. teachers should have been DRILLING this into your head but don't worry you'll get that needed tutelage if you stick around

You can call me what you want it doesn't make you right. I didn't disrespect you or anyone else on here. Why try and disrespect me? I gave you www.mathway.com. You gave me distributive property. I'm done on this topic onto another thread. Enough of this debate it's not going to be settled until we get respected logic that we can't refute. Good day to you homie.

ok homie... then what is the answer for x in your equation?

what was being debated over the internets is how to simplify:

48/2(9+3)

of which some people were coming up with 288.

while others were coming up with 2.

the way you suggest the problem should be simplified gives you an answer of 2.

thus, shouldn't your equation in the thread title read: 48/2(9+x)=2?

it seems like you were practicing fuckery from the get go to trick people in to simplifying the left side of the equation incorrectly. :hmm:

the answer to the problem 48/2(9+x)=288 is 8.91667 the original equation was 48/2(9+3)=??? where x cannot be 3 if the solution is 288... x is 3 when the solution is 2

substitute and solve

no fuckery, i just wanted those who solved that equation as 288 to prove their answer. you did remember proofs in school where you solve the equation and state the theorem you used to reach that end. you can get an answer from the equation i posted but the answer is not 3, 3 being the oringinal term in the problem. makes sense?

From Texas Instruments website..........

Does implied multiplication and explicit multiplication have the same precedence on TI graphing calculators?

Implied multiplication has a higher priority than explicit multiplication to allow users to enter expressions, in the same manner as they would be written. For example, the TI-80, TI-81, TI-82, and TI-85 evaluate 1/2X as 1/(2*X), while other products may evaluate the same expression as 1/2*X from left to right. Without this feature, it would be necessary to group 2X in parentheses, something that is typically not done when writing the expression on paper.

This order of precedence was changed for the TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, TI-89 family, TI-92 Plus, Voyage™ 200 and the TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode. Implied and explicit multiplication is given the same priority.

good shit.

wait... this is it!! thank you for posting this look at the bolded text students

i kill you!:angry:

nooooooooo alex for real b, that's wrong mayne:(

unless you're solving for the second equation :D :yes: :dunno: ?????

3 is the only number that makes the equation true, pimp juice

simply replace x with 3 and its 288

You posted a link to Mathway.com, and you posted an example that was a completely different problem. Thats what you did homes.

grrrrrrrr! let me solve this for you all

1) 48 OVER 2 open parentheses times 9 plus 3 close parentheses.

2)that is to say that the quotient of 48 divided by the product of 2 times 9 plus 3.

3)the product of 2 times 9 plus 3 (or 18 plus 6 is equivalent to 2(9 + 3)) is equal to 24.

4)48 divided by the sum of 24 is equal to 2.

you niggas are NOT performing order of operations. ALL TERMS UNDER THE DIVISION SIGN ARE TREATED AS ONE TERM UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED! this is a basic rule of arithmatic

look at that again. that's the problem you have in the thread title with the proper notation.

Read the very last line.

the 'X' term represents the number in parentheses in OUR problem:smh:. ya'll niggas are killing me. did you read the highlighted portion of the text? it tells you to solve the problem of a product UNDER a divisor in EXACTLY the way in which all of us with the CORRECT answer solved it. you have to distribute the '2' term across the parenthetical. ya'll niggas are acting willfully ignorant now. if the TI calculator's method of calcutating is the basis for your argument then you need to see what THEY wrote about it in THAT paragraph. is right there in black and white. :smh: i get home from the lake and this is what i come into? for real? at least my light ass got a nice tan going now let me share some of that 'sonning' with you.... lol jokes

bruh, the notation is scientific. you are not READING the mathematical statment correctly... it's like seeing a sentence and not recognizing the difference between a comma and a period with you guys. real talk:(

If you're using a the TI-80, TI-81, TI-82, and TI-85 then YES you get the answer of 2. If you're using the TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, TI-89 family, TI-92 Plus, Voyage™ 200 and the TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode then its NO because implied and explicit multiplication is given the same priority

uhhh okay if you say so. i'm going to look into it but in the meantime you're still wrong. 2. it's a fact with no emtional attachment

1. Reading is Fundamental. :hmm:

2.

this what I got thanks for wasting 15 minutes of my life :hmm:

2(9+x) = 1/6
9+x = 1/12
108/12 + x = 1/12
x= 1/12 -108/12
x = -107/12

or

48= 288 * 2 (9+x)
48= 576(9+x)
48= 5184+576x
-5136=576x
-5136/576=x

-107/12 = x
