Actually atmospheric refraction doesn't make the Earth look flat, as you claim, what it does is change the distance to the horizon (as in the photo of the so-called black swan). Because even in that photograph there is still a horizon that causes the bottom of the ships to disappear just at a further point than normal.
In reality, there isn't a single effect from refraction, moon dust, or unicorn farts that allows you to see the world as if it were flat. As I said, if this were true the sun and the moon would shrink into the horizon not get cut off by the curve of the earth.

But at those frequencies, the signals are guided by the ionosphere. However even HF signals are impacted by solar activity. The solar storm shut down HF comms on just about every band because it impacted the ionosphere's ability to carry those signals around the curvature of the Earth.

It does get smaller and smaller into the horizon, DEPENDING ON HEIGHT. If you are near sea level, the sun will be blocked out of view by the vanishing point BEFORE you get the chance to see it get smaller and smaller. But in footage taken from much higher in the sky, like from an airplane you CAN se the sun get smaller and smaller into the horizon. That is an absolute fact and there is footage to back that up, WITHOUT needing a solar filter.
