So talk to me about putting you hand over heart during national anthem.

I don't. I don't even sing the song. I just don't like it that much to sing. It isn't anything personal or out of hatred. It is just not who I am. It wouldn't matter where I am from. Outside of my family, I am not sure I would rep for anything that hard and I don't confuse patriotism for blind allegiance.

At church, when everyone has to stand and bow their head, do you play nice and bow your head?
I don't fucking go to church.

The only reason I sing is because I'm a singer but I don't put my hand over my heart. I'm ex-military, but I don't give a fuck. When I sing it I just do it to practice my vocals

When I was coming up, you just put your hand on your heart when you did the pledge. All this other bullshit came after 9/11 when non-serving non-veteran chickenhawks were were trying to out-patriotism each other. As a pretty liberal dude, I think we need to bring back the draft to at a minimum give some perspective to these out of control white folks.

Wow... It's a respect for those who have served this country that allow us to be as ungrateful as we are without consequence. Because this forum has a lot of young Cats on here, they may not remember 9/11, that's just an instance where those of different creed or theologies came together. I know it's had to believe with the present day injustice that's goingz on with Black America, but let's not disrespect our families members who sacrifices their lives so that we can have "our opinion". I've traveled in foreign lands and thought to myself, there is no way I could live like this, but as bad as it is here in the US, I don't know of anyone "Defecting" to another country, last I checked, you still have folks dying to get to the US knowing how bad it is. So YES, I stand at attention and have taught my Lil Soldiers to respect the Anthem, because, no matter how we think this Country is F'd up, it's a lot better than most. Until you witness it, you will NEVER under stand. There are certain things I can't remember, (I.e. 1st kiss/piece of azz), a few things that I do remember, my Pop's passing and when they replayed Whitney Houston's singing the Anthem after 9/11. I may be wrong but I believe that the enlistment rate went thru the roof. I respect alls opinion, but I had an old Marine tell me, opinions are like azz holes, EVERYone has one and they all stink! Lol. RIP Gunny, and thank you for teaching me to respect the Flag and others.... Y'all B.E.Z

You don't have to do that shit, that's just some fake rule racists made up to make people seem un-American. Don't believe the Hype as PE would say.

When I was really on my conscious thing and learning and reading in high school and college, no.

But then I met a few Black vets and some of my friends were actually seeing combat oversees...I changed up.

that's the flag they fighting under, and in they heart they fighting for me and mines.

So yeah I do.

but its all situational.

the heart thing naw...

but I stand take off my hat if I got one and I say prayers for all the brothers fighting some OTHER MAN'S war.

but that's just me and I completely understand those who don't.

I have the utmost respect for individuals who have served in the armed forces, however, the national anthem and my reverence for them are not one and the same.

Coldchi alluded to something that is rarely acknowledged or discussed:
"No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or doom of the grave"

There is a reason they only have u sing the first verse. They don't teach u the other verses. That one line alone pisses me the fuck off.

The full poem reads as follows:

Complete version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" showing spelling and punctuation
from Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright
stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that
our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half
conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Use go with the flow as kid in elementary and middle school...Then, I just stopped in high school no turning back....Don't stand for the pledge or anthem fuck all that shit...I ain't pledging to a country that does whatever they want to my people...

This is the reason that I stopped years ago and enlighten anyone who asks me why.
That's for CACs

FOHWTBS......... I didnt ask thouse stupid ass mufukkaz to volunteer for the job THEY wanted or NEEDED...... I dont owe them jack shit for their troubles. Fuck them, their service, & how they feel about people who think like me! Their service has nothing to do with my ability to be ungrateful, I give myself the ability to be so! I am that I am! I require no ones service to this "country"/corporation. Their sacrifice has NOTHING to do with anyone having & expressing their opinions. You cant even articulate HOW their service, rape, murder, & pillage of poor people in OTHER countries allows us to have an "opinion". ROLMFAO smfh You sound like a lost ass niggaah! ut @ the sametime you talking about "I respect alls opinion, but I had an old Marine tell me, opinions are like azz holes, EVERYone has one and they all stink!

At church, when everyone has to stand and bow their head, do you play nice and bow your head?

I'm respectfully silent, but no. First time I met my ladys father, who's a deacon asked me if I was saved and we had a convincing about that. Later at diner I didn't bow, or close my eyes and saw him look up. To this day we don't get along. I have no issue tolerating your views, but whats not about to happen is me bowing to your beliefs. I was born in America, from 2 American parents... I'm American if I stand, or dont, I'm American if cross my heart or dont, and ain't shit anyone can say that can change it. If they get butthurt phuckem. Do something then...

No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

Thats America for you. Better know the history and TELL YOUR KIDS, so they are not running around like brain dead cross dressers like Young thug

Fuck this country...This is the country that black men and woman built on their backs. This is the same country that disrespects us for the world to see. No love coming from me. To all you here who say it'd better than living in such and such a place need to stop being complacent. There is no love here for you either.

Do you? If So why.
you don't, why don't you.
Is their a cultural significance, historical to not doing so?

Hey PrincePrince,
I bet you had no idea how relevant your post was going to be, and in doing so you helped me to be better prepared. Therefore, I would just like to simply say, "Thank you."

Fuck that anthem, fuck the pledge of allegiance, and fuck that flag.
And fuck anybody who thinks that there's something "unAmerican" or "disrespectful" about not standing, singing, reciting or saluting.
Respect is earned, not granted.
I'm American, same as every other American. It's where the fuck I live, and that's all it means.
Anyone who has gone to war, in his belief that he was protecting American "freedom", has earned my respect.
That anthem has not earned my voice.
That flag has not earned my salute.
I refuse to acknowledge any soldier's sacrifice by feigning respect for a flag that represents a fairy-tale nation, an anthem that sings to me an insult, or a pledge of allegiance to a country that will not pledge itself to my inclusion.
But what I will do is take that US Constitution at it's word, when it says it's my right to not have to do any of that shit simply because I don't fucking feel like it.
