so how do fraternities work and what are the advantages?

Many are called but few are chosen... shouts out to brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha.

I pay dues once a year... and its a nice tax write off.

Dues goes to the upkept of fraternity and its national programs.

I'm not frat, but what it's like paying a tithe.
You keep the Frat going for the next generation of young leaders or young lazy fuck-ups depending on how seriously your frat takes its charter.

The connections are always helpful in the beginning as well.

In addition, it's a nice little tax write off.

what kind of connections do they offer?

I'm in a Frat, and actually work in our Corporate Headquarters. At least as far as our Frat goes, the "dues" you pay are a grand tax that is paid annually, which as stated earlier, goes toward administrative fees and helps to ensure the viability of the Fraternity. You also pay local dues to your individual chapter, and this money goes to cover the fees that the chapter is charged. (insurance, taxes)

As far as the advantages, you have plugged into a network that you remain in for life. Just to give an example, 42% of current African-American Drs. are Alphas, to my benefit; I have actually avoided a couple of speeding tickets, and my last 2 jobs came from knowing an Alpha who knew an Alpha, so on and so on. Being where I am now, whenever I leave the Headquarters, I have a plethora of opportunities waiting on me, based off of the connection I have made there.

It's not for everybody, but it was a good fir for me. Oh yeah, and by the way, if you have any game about you, you will slay mad chicks while you're in college...

You pay dues
Become instantly popular (unless yo frat is whack)
Get drunk
Fuck bitches
Graduate
Never see 80% of them niggas again...

Having gone to college...its sad to say but this is pretty much on the mark. The majority join for ALL the wrong reasons..i.e. popularity, women...etc. The community service aspect dies after college for many....but you'll see the tag on the front of their car and they'll be at homecoming guaranteed.

for me it was networking during school for old tests, game tickets, inside track on all the house parties, road trips, etc.

after school, it's primarily networking and hanging out during the weekends for football games, cookouts, superbowls, etc.

as we've gotten older, we'll all slowed down quite a bit though.

College Day Swiftly Pass.....
Frats are good especially for networking and ladies. But don't join for that becuase if you know how to market yourself well and politic you can network on your own. If the chapter pledges, you gonna be giving up ass for quite a long time so its a trade off. Lose some to get some later, kinda like bank interest. On the real, ask yourself if you are willing to become a better Brother and then be a model to others on campus. If you so, then look into it. If not, don't waste your time. Also, its wack to join if ya ain't gonna be active after college. We don't need those Bros either. The sad truth I have learned is that when you get to Grad chapter, it like a club house for old men away from their wives and family. They strive to do all this community work but forget about the BROTHERHOOD.
:smh:

I never joined because I figure I could do all the networking myself by meeting people. I always felt like Frat was a waste of time, since I could just do most of those things on my own. I'm going to graduate soon next year and I'm thinking I should join just for the experience. Just to see what all the fuss is about. Are the connections that much greater and is there a age limit or grade level since I'm a senior?

are all frat members White Collar? or, are there any Blue collar cats reppin' frats too? is it a mix? or on some uppity shit?

Doesn't matter, homie, it's not like it takes much of an effort to join one nowadays. If you don't like greek life after you "pledge", don't sweat it - you wouldn't have had to do much to get in, anyway.

I'd suggest seeking out some old heads, thoroughly research all 4 and make your decision from there. I came to college knowing nothing but Kappa... then I spent some time with them. Some of my best friends are A-Phi, but I found myself more aligned with the tenents of Omega. Best move I ever made, and there hasn't been a single day that I regret my decision.

I've been reading the other posts, and I guess there's just a difference in how I was "made", because the networking and financial benefits are lagniappe, not my endgame. Of greater import to me are the true friendships I've built, and the alliances I've forged. I make my own way, homie, and always have.

Frats are what you make of them; there's bruhs who do the political thing and work that angle, and bruhs who pledged just to get pussy, there's bruhs who are heavy into networking and bruhs who keep the flame lit just to keep some modicum of a social life intact. I'd never try to speak for the Alpha's, Nupes, or Sigma's (I have no idea what the fuck an Iota is), but I'd imagine all 4 of us fit the same bill. You are who you are for 19-20 years before you pledge, so while we have differing rites, we all are just a group of individuals trying to do something positive at the core.

Good luck, but the worst thing you could ever do is to join a Frat just because you see everybody else doing it.

GOOD SHIT.HOW MUCH ARE THE DUES?I READ ONE GUY SAY HE PAYS YEARLY ARE THERE MONTHLY DUES AS WELL?

Double-digits in the frat youngblood! I'm kinda far removed from what undergraduate dues are, but I'm sure they vary from frat to frat; However, I will say this - if you're only familiar with the way white folks run their organizations, then you're definitely on the wrong track.

Personally, I paid one lump sum that took care of my district and national dues for 3 years, then it's up to you if you want to continue to support the organization on the graduate level. If you wait to pledge "grad", then obviously the dues are SIGNIFICANTLY higher.

Besides those whose lines get dropped, or those whose schools don't have chapters, I've never quite understood cats who wait until they're 40-something and then decide to pledge and try to relive what they missed in college. The most fun you'll ever have in your life is right now, so if you're entertaining pledging, do it while you're still in school.

..and this information came from what source? Is this for medical doctors or PhD's? I'd love to see the breakdown of professionals by Greek affiliation. :D

If you have any game about you, you will slay mad chicks while you're in college...PERIOD!!! I slayed before I was made and after! The fraternity just made it easier.

Dues are cheapest at the undergraduate level. In Alpha, the older you get in college year-wise the more the cost. At the graduate level is believe the cost is $300 a year. It can be written off too. Just ask yourself this though: Why do you want to join? The best thing about my experience is the bond I built with my LBs in the fell clutch. I have a brotherhood with 6 other men that I will have for the rest of my days. My older heads that made me are like father figures. Its amazing how close a process can make total strangers. (No homo) This is what is missing from paper processes and what causes the frat to be like a BBA, NESBY, NABJ or any other professional organization. There's no real brotherhood the higher you get except from a few that may have traveled you same path.

Must be geography-specific. I'm in device sales, but sold in pharma for 7 years. Over my career I had the privelege of calling on virtually all disciplines in 3 major metropolitan areas, and to my best recollection, not more than 2 of the Dr's. I ever called on were Alphas.

my college have them. and to be honest them niggas is lame as fuck. the syht is stupid and pointless. and may i add the syht is time consuming when your jumping, to the point where alot of students who try to jump always end up getting low grades.

ill perfer to be with my homies for any help or connections.

back in your moms and grandmoms day, they used to actually do a lot of work in the community. but now? only thing they're good for is throwin parties and tryin to network after graduation. what a drop off :smh:

I don't doubt that either, but I saw a large number of cats not get any pussy on monday, cross on saturday, and start fucking the same chicks who dissed them on the following tuesday...

I co-sign to that man

Advantages Undergrad - road trip to different places and connect with other brothers & sororities :D, act a straight fool (only as a neo), prepare yourself to teach those that come after you! Pussy is NEVER an advantage. if you got game freaks will fuck if you got a nickel in a pocket straight up not because of some letters.

Advantages Grad - Networking! fuck dues cuzzo. I'm a Life Member cuz I don't have time to worry about that kinda shit now.

Disadvantages Period - niggas will NEVER understand why due to a lack of information and knowledge. Black men understand and although some might never make the journey to whatever, they understand. Cats will hate or talk shit because they figure you got beat down just to join (not knowing that the rituals from all frats combine African Rights of Passage & Masonic themes.) There's a difference between hazing & pledging!

Advantages period - the ability to humble ones' self through a great deal of events, to enjoy pledging as a part of the "college experience", learning about Black History because if you look at it, all these orgs were started waaaay PRE civil rights movement so they had the courage to start some Black Pride shit in the early 1900's and we look at it today (some of us) and say fuck that shit not realizing that had they done nothing some of us might not be here!

iight iight my experience was cool and the pussy amount didn't increase because of it. I was on the football team :D

First off let me express that most of if not all of what the frat members are speaking of above is correct.

Secondly, this world is ran by individuals that joined some secret society or pseudo secret society (masons, alphas, eastern stars, skull and bones, etc.) Check out the membership of past U.S. Presidents.

You will network with other brothers, you will learn how to deal with people, you will learn how to deal with money, you will learn the intracacies of politics on a small scale, you will learn how to organize events, whether they be parties, step shows, ice cream socials, intake, talent shows or whatever. You will be developed and molded and you will be better prepared for the real world. Thats a fact. You haters say what you will about the "following? shit. You loaners will find yourself alone in the end. This fraternity thing transcends across fraternal barriers. A Que will be more partial to an Alpha applying for a job, than just a regular joe and vice versa.

If you go to any college campus the fraternities and sororities hold a higher social status than a solitary individual.

Use google man, you'll see. And like I always say "Being in an organization whether its a fraternity or social group or study group, is more beneficial than not being in one".
