Posted April 9, 2008 – The NAACP Tuesday condemned comments from a member of the Charleston County (S.C.) School Board who said that teen mothers and unmarried women who have more than one child should either be sterilized or have subsequent children removed from their custody. We're not standing up as people and saying that we've had enough of that,” she told the host. “We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America . When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?"

Nelson B. Rivers, III, who runs the NAACP’s field operations, called the comments offensive.

“Her words are especially insulting coming from a female in the American South, where poor women were once involuntarily sterilized and often labeled as ‘unfit mothers’ because of their color or economic class,” he said.

Cook says that her words, which she said as a private citizen and not as a counselor or school board vice chairwoman, have been taken out of context.

Lonnie Randolph, Jr., president of the NAACP’s South Carolina State Conference, said, “An experienced politician and servant of the people should know better than to use such divisive words. It is regrettable that a public official who derives her livelihood from families in transition, and is sworn to serve the highest interests of children and families. should appear to hold such contempt for them. They deserve better. Every decent caring citizen must expect better.”

The association wants Cook to recant her remarks and seek sensitivity training, “where she can fully understand why they were egregious and hurtful.” It would also like for the school board to denounce her comments and reprimand Cook.

Im not so sure about this but poor parenting is defintely an issue that needs to be addressed. Anyone spending significant time in the public school system or criminal justice system will see the effects of said poor and/or absentee parenting and understand that something has to be done.

Yeah..those comments are radical without the 'd' and move the 'i' after the 'c'....ignorant bitch.

I am tired of these women just popping out babies and not trying to use protection after that. WHY? WHY? Didn't you learn when your last baby daddy left you holding the bag?

You don't KEEP a man by having a kid. Nowadays that is the quickest thing to get him to leave.

Even though she's right I agree with her. When you know women (like I do) ones with 5 children for 5 different men (I know 3 different women like that, one of the women has 6 for 6 different men) you have to wonder.

If you EVER want to know why black children are being raised in poverty it's because of that bullshit. Like one of the other posters said, how many "mistakes" do you have to make?

SOME OF THESE WEAK ASS WATERED DOWN ASS BITCH BOYS NEED TO BE STERILIZED.
EVERYBODY JUST SHOULDNT HAVE KIDS.:smh:

how do you know the white chick was talking about black women..
maybe she was talking about all women..
not once did she mention black women...
naacp being too sensitive...

I live in NYC
you take the train from the bronx to manhattan
you going to see mexican women with a baby in strollers and a 4 yr. old walking beside her.....:smh::smh::smh:

fucking mexians (latino's ) in general breed like rabbits..
that shit sound racist
but
it's the truth...

Blacks do, indeed, have much higher rates of abortions than whites or other minority groups. In 2000, while blacks made up 17 percent of live births, they made up more than twice that share of abortions (36 percent). If those aborted children had been born, the number of blacks born would have been slightly over 50 percent greater than it was.

The comparison with whites and other minorities is striking. Whites made up 78 percent of live births, but only 57 percent of abortions. Non-black minorities had 7 percent of live births and 5 percent of abortions. If the aborted children had been born for either group, the percentage increase in the number of children born to these groups would have been less than that for blacks: 16 and 32 percent, respectively.

Data from 1973 on indicate that black women's share of abortions has consistently been at least twice their share of live births.

But not all those babies would necessarily have been born if abortion were illegal or harder to obtain. A number of recent academic studies have found that making abortion more difficult results in less pre-marital sex and fewer pre-marital pregnancies.

Professor Jonathan Klick at the Florida State University Law School and Professor Thomas Stratmann at George Mason University authored a recent study claiming that Roe v. Wade increased premarital sex by as much as 25 percent, because the option of ending unwanted pregnancies through abortion made sex less risky.

In 1973, the year the Supreme Court rendered its Roe v. Wade decision, there were 11 abortions per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. Eight years later, that number doubled for the same group to 22. In terms of the total number of abortions, 615,831 legal abortions took place in 1973; 1,300,760 in 1981.

The Centers for Disease Control recorded detailed information on the race of those having abortions from 1970 to 1981. It shows Roe’s impact on abortions by blacks in the years immediately before and after the decision. The Supreme Court’s decision had the biggest impact on blacks, raising their share of abortions from 21 to 30 percent, while their share of live births only increased from 12 to 15 percent.

In the past 10 years, state legislatures around the country have passed or considered bills making it increasingly harder for women and girls to get safe legal abortions early in their pregnancies. Tactics include mandatory waiting periods, mandatory parental consent and state-mandated misinformation fed to women (like abortion increases your risk of breast cancer). Not to mention slashed state funding for abortion and basic contraception to the poorest, most vulnerable categories of women - the uninsured, women of color, new immigrants, low-wage workers, sex workers, minors.

If a woman in America has a late-term abortion, it's likely to be because she had to wait months to:

a) Find an abortion provider
b) Save, scrounge or borrow the money to pay for her abortion
c) Find the transport and funding to travel out of county or state for the procedure
d) Get the time off work - risking job loss, and permanent poverty
e) Find childcare for her other children
f) Go through state-enforced counsellings and mandatory delay periods to make her change her mind

Fuck it, lets just blame the victim...... :hmm:

As long as they do the same to the dead beat dads, I'm for it!!!

Agreed.

But when "dad" is paying his share, he should have equal rights and equal custody, not visitation when she sees fit.

Deadbeat fathers, nine times out of ten the type women we talking bout do not even know who the father is without help from Maury povich. :smh: :smh: :smh:

This single mother shit goes hand in hand with the feminist movement and government intervention in family. Didnt have this shit 50 years ago unless a spouse died.

Even women with 15 kids had them by the same man.

Now you got hos 4 kids four dads.

Hos without money for a fucking bus pass are reproducing when these dumb hos qualify for grants for college.....................all they have to do is wait 4 years, but no, they want to continue the cycle and make their childs life harder than theirs. :smh: :smh:

And if women didnt control the pussy they wouldnt make "date movies" and we wouldnt have to "spit game". They can say strap up or no puss.

For some reason they dont. For a movie, some weed, or a nice dinner or game spit, they just lose their mind let you hit raw and get pregnant.

once a woman has 3 baby's daddys,,, the state should have the right to pour some fix~a~flat in that pussy

I agree. But they also need to sterilize the men with 6 and 7 kids.

Get em all so I can pay less in fuckin taxes as the responsible citizen that I am.

hey, she has a point..too many of these single mothers having too many kids..and not even married...that's cazy

Well I would say it's pretty apparent that this woman (Nancy Cook) isn't talking about sterilizing poor white women. She's more than likely talking about sterilizing Black and Latino women. A Eugenics technique that's straight out of the early 20th Century.

And in this article it talks about her being accused of sending an email out with a racial slur in it that was in reference to a former school superintendent. So there may be a pattern to her behavior.

Cook's on-air remarks draw fire

Says sterilization comment taken out of context

Charleston County School Board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook suggested taking babies away from unfit parents and sterilization as potential solutions to society's ills on a Thursday morning radio show.

Nancy Cook

Her comments came during the 9 a.m. hour on WTMA-AM's "Morning Buzz with Richard Todd." The topic of conversation was a new report on the dismal graduation rates in the nation's 50 biggest cities.

Cook told Todd she's worked on the issue of poverty for more than a decade and that the community still tolerated problems such as teenage pregnancies and babies born in poverty and out of wedlock.

"We're not standing up as people and saying that we've had enough of that. We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America. When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?" Cook said.

She wrote in an e-mail response later to The Post and Courier that what she said was taken out of context.

Cook wrote: "I've spent my entire life helping others. For the last 14 years, I have assisted women, children, and veterans of all ages and races to turn their lives around. For the last eight years, I've worked tirelessly to improve our school system. The issues of teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates go hand-in-hand. We need to discuss this as an issue of personal responsibility and accountability, not government intervention. Clearly, to suggest that I would be for such a radical idea would be against my morals, beliefs, and life work."

Cook said that she didn't intend for her remarks to be racist. She said she was making the remarks as a private citizen and from her perspective as a professional counselor and not as a school board leader.

Cook was identified at the beginning of the show as a member of the school board. She made the comment about

10 minutes before the show finished, and her comments didn't have a chance to cause waves until later in the day when a local TV station reported on what she said.

WTMA's phone lines were inundated with calls Friday morning from listeners who wanted to talk about Cook's comments, said Fred Storey, the station's news director.

Some listeners thought her comment was racist and provocative, while others were supportive and glad she opened up dialogue on issues tied to graduation rates, Storey said.

Cook has served on the school board eight years and recently filed as a Republican to run for a seat on County Council. She will be challenging incumbent and veteran Councilman Curtis Bostic, who also is a Republican.

Bostic hadn't heard Cook's comment in the context in which she made it, and he said without that opportunity, he didn't want to comment.

Some who have worked with Cook said her comment didn't fit with what they know about her. Longtime school board member and Chairman Hillery Douglas said he thought Cook was trying to give an answer to a problem that has most people perplexed.

"Sometimes when you try and do that off the cuff, the wrong things come out," he said. "I'm almost certain she really doesn't mean that that's the solution to it by sterilizing. I just think it was something that was said that should not have been said."

Fellow longtime school board member Gregg Meyers said Cook's comment surprised him.

Cook will say whatever is on her mind at the moment, Meyers said, and he thought she made the comment in a moment of frustration and that it didn't reflect her broader efforts to help people. Cook also runs a homeless shelter.

"It's probably not a good representation of Nancy's humanity," he said.

This is the second time Cook has been accused of making a racist comment.

In December 2006, she was accused of sending an e-mail that contained a racial slur in reference to the former schools superintendent.

The real problem is poverty and low expectations that it can bring. I have never met a woman who grew up middle class or better that had more than one child out of wedlock or a stable common law relationship. It's always the chicks who grew up poor who have more kids than they can afford.

If you grew up in a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 half sisters and a single mom who bagged groceries at Safeway then you'll see nothing wrong with becoming that same woman yourself. Shit, how many songs are dedicated to the "strong single mothers" who worked 3 jobs so that her family could barely be fed? How about a song for the woman who never put herself in that position in the first place?

Sterilization won't change anything. Women who are determined to be losers will just find another way to do it.

C'mon Bruh,
You know it ain't just Mexican women.

I was on the "A" train at 6:30 in the A.M. yesterday, going from Washington Heights to Chelsea. And this Sista got on at 145th with 3 kids who weren't even five years old.

At 6:30 AM?
On a Saturday?

Nothing but those kiddies moving and screaming non-stop. She's beating and screaming to keep them in control. I asked her if she wanted the seat I was sitting in for one of them. Girl cops an attitude. So I kept my ass in it.

Had this one elderly sista glaring at them. And them she looks at me and just rolls her eyes.

How long are these women going to continue to blame (Black) men for the fact that they can't keep their legs closed?

Chicks are doing nothing but creating fodder for the Criminal Justice System.

Pertaining to this thread...
NAACP did more harm than good by making this a racial thing.

I didnt see any racial animus from this article, and I am more then inclined to agree, especially after that one article from Colorado about teen dumb asses arguing about what gang the kid will be in when he's older

There are just some people, men and women, that should not be allowed to reproduce, because thats just breeding in more degenerate genes into the genepool

But if they start making laws like in Tenn that demands a paternity test upon birth, these home paternity test, it will be a start

I also think when a woman kills a child, sterilize that bitch

If she abuses a child, sterilize that bitch

If she willingly breeds with no goal having, no account criminals, sterilize her, and the dumb asses she fucked

I sadly agree with her; standards have slipped so low as to where this occurrence of multiple children, multiples fathers, one mother is occurring to much. Women today have crazy ass standards for fucking a dude and dudes aren't even trying to wrap it up and many are just skeeting away in them like its just the hot shit to do. Pulling out has become a thing of the past. Condom sales what are those; and birth control, well like most meds ;it aint workin as well as it used to.

Something has to be done maybe sterilization isn't such a bad idea.
But regulate that better than anything that has been "regulated" before.

them mexicans, atleast have kids with the same fathers

I hate to say it but I agree with this to. Many of the Mexican folks I know will marry the brawd they knock up and have at least 5 with them. But black women are content with having 3-4-5-6 for 3-4-5-6 different men.

My godsons mom just dropped another baby for another no good dude and she was arguing me down the other day that she could pull a "doctor" or a "lawyer" if she wanted to.

What man with a career wants a baby making machine who can't seem to get it right. :smh:

*And even if that white lady is racist, I hate to say it, but she's right about this one.

we talk about racism all the time on this board keeping people in poverty. But I think whats worse is "apathy" that so many women have towards themselves.

I dont' think they should be sterilized.

Just cut them off from government aid and programs.

If you can't afford to have children...then you should not keep having them...and expecting other people to pay for them. :smh:

Cut off the GOV'T check and you will see a decrease in hoes breeding bastards.
