Simone Biles out of the Olympics

Classifying athletic failure - physical or mental - as a health problem benefits no one. Elite performance at the highest level is hard. Failure, and fear of failure, is part of the struggle. We are all human and can sympathize, freaking out in a stressful situation is part of the human condition. People fail.

There is nothing wrong or abnormal going on here. This failure is the fault of Simone Biles. She let herself, her team, and her country down. Yes, that is a heavy burden; it is the one she carries. We still love, adore, and admire her as the greatest gymnast of all time, and hope she gets her mind right. But let's call this what it is.
like I said..she lost the eye of the tiger...she lost her edge and WHY that happened only she knows and will be speculation for us forever. As a PROFESSIONAL athlete, she's paid to produce and pressure comes with that....aint no one giving out 100+ MILLION dollar contracts just to watch that athlete walk away at the moment of truth and NOT feel some kind of way about that shit. No fans who have emotionally invested in her success and talent and WANT to see her achieve watch her walk away at the moment of truth and NOT feel some kind of way about that.

no hate or lack of support just shock and disappointment.

Fuck....no matter how you slice it...its not a good look..

If she's not in any physical pain then you suck it up and compete...if you lose then you lost...

Between this and naomi it's looking less like black girl magic and more like black girl fragility...

Black women used to pride themselves on their ability to take the hits, punch back and do that shit with style and guts...

Now it's looking like if they can't win they don't want to play the game..:smh:

Her coaches and support system did a sucky job of talking her thru that shit.
Its time we stop putting all that pressure on our women. African-Americans are not animals, beast of burden, etc. Its time for a new song. Pressure will kill you. To be 24 years old and to be hated because you are the greatest at it? Shit. Hopefully, mental health will take center stage because to be American, you got to have some type of crazy. We live in a pressure cooker society. It needs to stop.

lets be honest here..whose putting pressure on simone?? who pushed her to do shit male gymnast can't do?? did she need to do the yurchenko??? did she need to have 4 moves named after her?? her legacy was cemented by the LAST Olympics...she could have retired then and been good. So who pressured her to do the last 4 years?? SHE pushed the envelope as far as her talent is concerned.

I haven't been to her level of sports, but I was a young phenom in boxing. Me and about three other youngsters almost made the Olympics. I lost out in the Western Trials and the other three lost at the main Trials. I was the youngest of the four, I was 16 years old. Although I enjoyed the shit, it was a pressure cooker. I had to do interviews and sign autographs and shit. I was like, I'm here to fucking fight, not do all that extra shit. Dude, to go through that twice, man, that is a hard and long road for that 24 year old woman. Whether she did all the extra herself she did it for folk like us. Black folk she has been told by her grandparents that she has to make us look good. Man, the pressure and on top of that she not getting paid. Yes, she is getting endorsements now, and they pay her, but she is an amateur athlete. They don't get paid. Its a shitty game my friend.

Nobody knows your mental health like you do but she should have done this before the Olympics and allowed another athlete prepared mentally/physically to compete to go.

OK that is insane I JUST had this conversation

And I don't go personal on the main anymore

But I will say this

I JUST had this conversation and my oldest told me...

you would NOT have let me do that.

I was legit SHOCKED and kinda hurt

Why would you say something like that?

and of course she gave a laundry list of sports, academics and social situations were I had in fact gave her the you can't quit etc etc speech

And then I had to chill take a deep breath and think

I said and those times when you looked me in my eyes and said Daddy? I can't.

What did I do?

she said you were ready to tell everyone to go to heck.

I smiled and gave her a hug and said because

I know YOU I love YOU you EARNED that

and even if you were about to take a rocket to Mars and at the last moment told me

Dad I can't.

I would hold you hug you ...

and then SMACK the back of your head and yell shout you better get your ass on that rocket you not embarrassing me in front of these white folk!

And then?

If I looked in your eyes...

and I could see you could REALLY not do it?

I would fight EVER SINGLE PERSON there to make sure you didn't have to go.

But you WOULD have to face the cameras and EXPLAIN best you could

I got another hug and she said I love you dysfunctional daddy

I love you to dysfunctional daughter.
thats an endearing story (props on your family) but look at the truth in that...

I JUST had this conversation and my oldest told me...

you would NOT have let me do that.

cuz you know what she can do....

Monday night I was thinking about Simone and what she was getting ready to do and I thought if I was there and talking to her I would have told her that she reminds of the Superman Cardboard speech..

That last line "What we have here is a rare opportunity for me to cut loose and show you just how powerful I really am."

Thats what I imagined telling Simone.. thru all the changed rules and discouragement to do the most difficult routines she knows she can do..thru all the bullshit... now is her opportunity to cut loose and show all those bastards just how good she REALLY is.

And then this morning I wake up and find out she quit the finals :eek::eek::eek:o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

So yeah..I come off kinda hard because considering everything she'd been thru... THIS was NEVER anything I thought could happen to her...not on this stage and at this point in her career.

Simone Biles, the four-time Olympic gold medalist, will not compete in Thursday’s individual all-around competition after withdrawing from the team finals because of a mental health issue, according to an emailed statement from U.S.A. Gymnastics.

Biles will be evaluated daily to see if she will participate in the event finals next week.
“We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being,” the statement said. “Her courage shows, yet again, while she is a role model for so many.”

Biles, 24, had qualified for all four event finals and was expected to win gold in at least three of those events. In the all-around, she was hoping to repeat her title from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games to become the first woman to win back-to-back titles in the all-around in 53 years.
Biles stepping back from the Olympic all-around marks the end of an era in the sport. She hasn’t lost an all-around competition since 2013 when she was 16 and still wore braces. The contest tests individual athletes on all four disciplines: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor competition, to determine the most complete gymnast.

While she had come to the Tokyo Olympics feeling “pretty good,” the weight of expectations on her as Team U.S.A.’s biggest star at the Tokyo Games became tougher by the day and in the hours before the team final she said she was shaking and couldn’t nap. In the end, just too heavy for her to bear, she said after withdrawing from the team final on Thursday.

Eh, I wouldn't expect a woman to continue to literally bend over backwards for an organization that looked the other way while a sexual predator fingerbanged her and her teammates. She doesn't owe USA Gymnastics a damn thing. Looking forward to what she does with her next chapter in life...

She quit on her team at the worst possible time. This sexual assault by proxy argument is insidious and heterophobic. Best of luck to her, but I can't rock with a chick like that.

You people are exhausting. She is tough tough, but we all have our limits. The woman has been through hell. Sexually assaulted, vilified because of her talent. This embrace of her is recent. She doesn't get the scores she deserve, the whole thing is a pressure cooker. You know what, most people haven't done shit in life but sit behind these computer screens and talk shit about shit they don't know about. The whole thing is tough. Do you realize how many people who have tried to do what she is doing and the emotional trauma you go through to get to that one spot? Then you are put in front of cameras and shit and you have to perform like you some damn animal. You have to always be happy and smiling and shit because its good for business. Nawh, you people are exhausting because you talk out the side of your heads.

I really think Biles left because of some racist shit that went down or just all the nonsense criticism she's been getting over having that "goat" picture on her uniform and just all the other bullshit she has to deal with being Black and being ultra successful in basically an all white sport.

I think she said fuck ya'll, try to win this shit without me and see what happens. She's a multi millionaire. Not sure how much money she lost by leaving, but obviously she doesn't give a shit if she loses some money behind this.

I honesty think she's more pissed than anything.

I personally think they all saying f the Olympic a.
So far 3 of them has claimed mental. Health issues.
Naomi
Shacarri by way of her mother death.
Simone

Unfortunate that it happened....hopefully she gets all the help she needs...might not be fair but this will follow her....Roberto Duran is one of the greatest boxers of all time and ranks extremely high on all time pound for pound lists but for most casual boxing fans he is most known for "no mas"...these things stay with you unfortunately...no matter how many times you push yourself, people remember the one time you didn't

She is the GOAT of all time in her sport but I wish this didn't happen

Shout out to the GOAT Dominique Dawes. The only 'Break" she took was Breaking them crackas off with gold medals.

All I know is that I'm just an observer from the outside, so I can't say for anything what's actually going on in her head or her body. But I trust that she has an idea of it, and knowing that you can't do something safely is just as important as knowing that you can.

Also, we can talk about how you should be able to handle stress and blah, blah, blah... but it's been a rough fucking year. For everybody. For a lot of reasons. But genuinely, if anybody has to take a break or pull back from something, I don't even need a reason other than "I lived through 2020".
