Should we shut down the US Postal Service?

Email has destroyed its business model, and even deep cuts in personnel and facilities might not be enough to save it.
By doubleace on Fri, Aug 12, 2011 1:25 PM

This post comes from Lynn Mucken at MSN Money.

Back in May, I declared that the U.S. Post Service, a treasured American delivery vehicle in one form or another since 1775, had outlived its usefulness, a victim of email and its own bloated financial structure. I also wrote:
Another thing that is not going to happen is the prompt and thrifty dissolution of the U.S. Postal Service as we know it. There are just too many jobs -- the Postal Service has 563,000 employees -- and a shrinking but still vocal group of holdouts who insist they do not need a computer.
For them, we will waste years and billions, maybe trillions, of dollars on a barely breathing product.

It was no surprise, then, to see that Congress, apparently not wearied by doing almost nothing to address the national debt problem, has offered two plans to solve the Postal Service's deficit, which is $20 billion over the past four years, including $8.5 billion in the past fiscal year. The bipartisan plan kicks the can down the road for future elected officials to worry about. The conservative plan would solve the problem by, among other things, repainting the trucks.

What was surprising was the proposal put forth by the Postal Service brass themselves: cut jobs, close post offices and withdraw from the federal health care and pension programs that they say do not meet "the private-sector comparability standard."

This is no small stuff.

According to The Washington Post, citing a notice sent to employees, the Postal Service wants to cut its current work force of 563,000 by 220,000 over the next four years. About 100,000 cuts would come from attrition, the rest by elimination.

We need to shut down the boarders. Or at least put up 180,000 volt electric fence 40 feet tall all around the border. Complete with automatic machine guns mounted every30 feet and land mines placed every 10 feet.

Nobody cares right now. It's all about WalBlunt.

No shit. What a pivotal stage in BGOL history. I can't believe I missed the biggest OCKING in the 21st century!! :smh:

Anyhow,do we need the USPS? Especially with all these tablets at the ready? Or should we merely reduce the work force?

Maybe someday. There'll probably always be some need for some of the services. But letters, bills, cards... fugitaboutit!

Remember though... the post office is self sustained. Although they are government they are supported by postage purchases.

Not shutdown. That will never happen. Postal workers paychecks still come from the gubment. They need to scale back like a mofo though.

Given they are building makeshift submarines to ship cocaine into our country, I'm pretty sure they could dig a tunnel under a fence.

If the US Government was serious about securing our borders, our borders would be secure. Point blank period.

Politicians trumpet this issue because it gets voters to the polls, but any efforts in this area have been, and will continue to be minimal. Nobody wants to dedicate that kind of money and resources to an issue that only affects a small number of states, many of which got enough big oil and farming money to fix the issue on their own.

...Now when Mexicans start hopping the border and blowing up power plants THEN, I'd recommend you submit your ideas to your elected representative

I use them, at times, successive days in a row. I have always wondered what the real numbers are on them losing or gaining customers or market share.

My cousin works for the USPS. I know they have a partnership where FedEx uses their planes, or vice versa, to ship packages. USPS is a hybrid of government and private sector.

The US postal service is still very affordable, useful and reliable. I would hate to see it shut down.

I'm glad someone brought this up. The Postal Service is actually a private entity. The United States part is merely a name.

It's really the senior folks and computer illiterates keeping the post office around. With less employees and more government subsidies, we can enjoy less costly measures with the USPS.

Millions of customers statements get sent through the USPS every day
Then there's the endless amount of junk...Not to mention there's still a significant percentage of the population that does not even OWN a computer

The biggest problem they have is having to prefund the retirement account of their workers. They would be profitable if it wasn't for that. Not to mention the last time they were profitable enough to stock a surplus Congress too the money. Keep in mind it's hasn't received any government money since the early 80s.

It's easy to say they are inefficient and need to be shut down when the people who keep it in the red and in trouble won't let it compete like a normal business even though it truly is independent.

The Reps set that shit up in 2006 before it was to be turned over to the Dems, and now they have a problem because of it

The Reps set up the problem, and come up with the solution to break the unions and lay off people

And the post office cant take back the money they overpaid into their funds to get in the black again, but the government wants to take that money and fund other retirement funds for other government workers:smh:

These tea partiers get so butt-hurt talking about the founding fathers, but want to destroy an institution that was created by one, Ben Franklin:hmm:

100% correct :yes::yes:

If the US Postal Service is a private business like they claim they are.. if they don't know how to operate their business, maybe the need shut the fuck down. Someone else will fill that void if its still needed.

The US postal service is still very affordable, useful and reliable. I would hate to see it shut down.

They're already doing some foul shit to the employees. My Wife has almost 20 years in at USPS and they're cutting the hours yet bringing in temps to do the work.

i dont like or agree with some of the shit the postal service is doing. they've been eliminating alot of offices for the past few years. and plan on cutting thousand more locations, which will eliminate thousands of more jobs. even still, they are laying off people that are very close to retirement in order to save money and not have to pay them retirement benefits and pensions. on top of that, they raise the price of postage stamps every gotdamn year....and they still losing. it wont be long before mail is only delivered 3 days a week.

The post office is funded by themselves with postage they will grow and shrink by demand. If people email they will shrink. If people lose jobs oh well thats why when you pick a career you pick one you can forsee being needed till you die. Like a barber, will always be needed for haircuts or a doctor. But sooner or later regular letter mail will be gone.
