"I am purposing that the united States of America need a national dialogue on race gender and class. A Conversation on par with the truth and reconciliation commissions that took place in south Africa...."
What's confusing?
I'm not confused..the T&R commissions were conversations mostly without addressing redress of any kind.
Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) work by
facilitating a process of truth-telling, forgiveness, and reconciliation after periods of conflict or human rights abuses
. They aim to address past wrongs by documenting abuses, acknowledging the suffering of victims, and promoting healing and reconciliation within communities. TRCs often involve public hearings where victims and perpetrators can share their stories, leading to public awareness and a sense of justice.
Here's a more detailed look at how TRCs function:
1. Truth-Telling and Documentation:
TRCs gather testimonies from victims and perpetrators to document past abuses and understand the causes and consequences of human rights violations.
Public hearings allow victims to share their stories and be recognized, providing a sense of closure and justice.
The commission's findings are often compiled into a final report, which can be used to inform policy changes and prevent future abuses.
2. Forgiveness and Reconciliation:
TRCs often include mechanisms for forgiveness and reconciliation
, such as amnesty programs that allow perpetrators to disclose their involvement in human rights violations in exchange for not being prosecuted.
The process of truth-telling and public acknowledgement can help to heal wounds and build trust within communities.
TRCs may also recommend reparations for victims, such as financial compensation or institutional reforms.
3. Public Education and Awareness:
TRCs play a crucial role in educating the public about the history of human rights abuses and promoting understanding between different groups within society.
By documenting the truth and promoting dialogue, TRCs can help to break down barriers and foster reconciliation.
Examples of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions:
South Africa:
The South African TRC, established in 1995,
investigated human rights violations during the apartheid era and granted amnesty to those who fully disclosed their involvement in politically motivated crimes.
Canada:
The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established to document the history and legacy of residential schools and promote reconciliation between Canadian and Indigenous peoples.
Peru:
The Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission investigated human rights violations during the period of armed conflict in
the 1980s and 1990s.
Whites/Europeans don't have TRCs...they have TRIALS...and punishment is meted out after people are found guilty and compensation is had.
It's pointless to have these conversations if there's no real redress for the damage that was done.
