Should Robert Downey Jr. Have Gotten A Pass for Doing Tropic Thunder?

some of these comments make me cringe...its like, "you dont really believe that, do you"
The point was that Hollywood often hires white actors for roles that are focused on people of color (Gods of Egypt for example), they took that and exaggerated it to a really high level, which is where the comedy comes from. Downey Jr was playing an Australian method actor that is playing a black southerner...it's the ultimate exaggeration of studio heads that don't believe that a black actor can draw an audience.

It's cool if someone is hit personally by the character, but I think it's a "can't see the forest for the trees" type of scenario. I will say it's interesting the difference in Downey's response to his Tropic Thunder character vs Eddie Murphy's apology tour he's been doing as of late in regards to his gay jokes from the the 80's.

Nothing really to get a pass for. It wasn't presented as Robert Downey Jr. playing a black guy in a film... it was Robert Downey Jr. playing a bit of an asshole actor who takes method acting to the extreme. I could see if it was a problem within the movie (fictional audience anger over the character wearing blackface) but I don't see a problem with it outside of the movie keeping in mind how it was written.
All blackface is offensive to one degree or another. But this wasn't actually blackface per se. In context, it wasn't the worst I've seen and I'm pretty sure RDJ is not known as a racist.
Pass? No, but no censure either. We have to be careful about the hidden messages in these types of things. In the context of the movie, black people weren't the butt of the jokes. Brandon T Jackson's character called him out at damn near every turn.
Hollywood execs and the overly extreme "method actors" were the butt of the joke.
The same "woke" people who ask this asinine question are the same people who were 1st in line to see these films starring RDJ.
And clearly, the success of these films prove that audiences (of ALL races) have long since moved passed any bullshit "perceived" issues with RDJ in Tropic Thunder.

And in spite of the internet piracy, those movies still went on to be the highest grossing films of the year. (In the case of Endgame, the highest grossing film of ALL TIME).
50 yr history... Millions of comic books published... Various tv shows for the past several decades... A decade long run movie series... 7.6 billion possible consumers... Released worldwide... When you add all those factors up no wonder it did so good... People were fans of the characters..not saying downey didn't do a good job in most films but he was in a role that had an already built fanbase... Hell a wack movie juss made a billion about some loser in a clown mask... They just so happened to say it was an untold story of 1 of the most notorious villain in comic book history and people ran out to see it... Take away the connection to the comic book world that s hit is lucky to be a Netflix film at best...the power of comic books and built in cult following...
