I agree with you but the Amazon dude did put in work at the beginning I have to give him credit he became an asshole later with his money but he did put in work in the early days. Ask for Elon Musk well the only thing I give him credit for is bringing electric cars to the market other than that he’s an asshole.

I think that is just bad advice and will just lead most people to burn out.

It's not impossible to work hard and have balance. When you don't have balance is when you end up with people going nuts or strung out trying to overcorrect.

Or, maybe I am misunderstanding what he means by balanced.

Yeah but because they are black Men we have to unfortunately in this country operate in that mode. What Shannon is saying is you can’t half step to greatness especially being a black man sometimes you have to put in the work to achieve your goals. You can tell that Shannon went to an Historically black college and university.

He's also partly responsible for:

Peer-to-peer money transfers (Paypal)
Reusable space rockets (SpaceX)
Brain to machine connection (Neuralink)
Internet across anywhere on Earth (Starlink)

Real androids also???
Like him or hate him, he's advancing humankind forward due to his grand visions.

I agree with this for the most part.

Please note, he's saying the balance will be off if you want to be "great" or "exceptional" and I think for the most part, this is true. You have to define what "great" or "exceptional" is...he's not saying you can't be successful with balance.

Great or exceptional is like top of your profession type shit. And at some point, most people have to grind and make sacrifices most aren't comfortable making to get there...it could be your social life, your friends, your free time, your family...any or all of them (along with some luck no doubt). I remember Kobe was talking about his obsession to be great and he let it be known that he sacrificed a lot of the late night social life his peers enjoyed and that he had to acknowledge that he was never going to be things like a great friend due to his constant passion not allowing him to remember to acknowledge or be physically around for things like birthdays and other key points in many people he cared about lives.

People who are entrepreneurs...the great ones...how many times did they have to sacrifice sleep, comfort, social activities with friends etc...? It's something that in general, you have to set yourself apart in order to be great. People on this board who have built something up great for themselves are likely to tell you that at least for a period of time, there were life "balance" sacrifices that had to be made.

Like I said though, you have to note there is a difference in greatness and success. Regular success will allow for more of the life balance than the pursuit of greatness.

I think this is most people's issue with Elon, none of those were his grand visions, per se. Everything listed there likely would have came to be without him, probably just not all attributed to the same person.

It is ironic that he named his car company Tesla, when he probably has more in common with Edison.

Seldom is an advent the sole invention of the founder. Often, it's improvements layered atop someone's existing body of work. Progress is cumulative, and you either innovate or simplify it for mass adoption. Elon is very successful doing this, as his vision and willpower are indomitable.

Why people think greatness is only defined by money made. It’s mothafuckas out here figuring out the impossible people like Musk or Bezos just lucky to be born into wealth
I agree with you but you know that’s the thinking in most Americans head.

Here's an interesting FYI, humanity should be at least 20-30 years forward given our point in the technological singularity, but greed, IP infringements, corporations, courts, attorneys, and governments often stagnate and curtail technological innovation if it threatens their bottom line or hold on power. The electric vehicle should have taken off circa 2001. Remember the documentary "who killed the electric car?"

I think I disagree more so with the terminology than the message. It's kind of feels like most people think having balance means having it all.

An example might be someone wanting to be in shape, but still wanting to eat like a fat ass. That's just unrealistic. Balance would be working out and eating healthy, but also have a cheat day once a week where you don't work out and eat whatever.

However, this takes will, and I think that is how such conversations should be framed. You have to have the will to be great, but that can be achieved with balance.

Maybe it's just because I associate balance with mental state.

Sir me and you are going to have to disagree even if you don’t make it to your goal you still put in the work to get somewhere in life.

Where did I say you didn't have to put in work? That is not what I am saying at all.

Y'all shitting on Bezos.....

Dude took Amazon in the last 10 years from a marketplace to the number 1 shipper of goods in the US/ maybe even the planet.

They have a fleet of planes bigger than UPS and FedEx. They ship/ deliver more packages across the US each day themselves while still using UPS, FedEx AND USPS to deliver their packages as well......

That is HUUUGE!

And they are going to electrify their fleet....mayne that is a big boost to the electric car/battery market.

His outside ventures,( I'm only familiar with Blue Origin and his philanthropy) are few.....he stayed mostly tunnel vision focused on making Amazon a behemoth and it is.....it is truly too big to fail. There are so many hundred thousandaires/ millionaires that have been born off of Amazon.

I agree with this somewhat, but people act like Musk is designing the cars and building the rockets himself, when in reality he probably is more so just a money man.

I will give Musk credit for what he choses to invest in.

I have more respect for Jeff Bezos then Musk

Well I assume the way you were speaking that you meant that statement.

Nope, you have to put the work in. I thought my example would make that clear.

I think I am just misunderstanding what balance means in this context.

My issue/concern is this comes off like hustle culture. I also don't like people using billionaires for such examples. Like someone else said, I would have received it better if he would have used himself as an example.

Do a Google search on that phrase and you will see where he is coming from. I was going to post it but I going to let you work a little bit.

I searched google and nothing really came up, mostly results about work life balance, but I don't think that is relevant.

If there is something that can provide more context maybe post it.

What’s not relevant to you could be the world to someone else…..keep that in mind in the future

Don't reply to me with a bullshit riddle. Either post something that adds context or don't.
That is not a riddle that is the truth…. To make it more simple its the equivalent of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Basically saying you have to be willing to grind 24/7/365 to make it to the top. The people who are truly great in their given field, usually had/have an obsession with their work. I remember hearing about Jimmy Johnson leaving his wife so he could focus on football or how Kobe would call Jordan in the middle of the night picking his brain about basketball. Being naturally gifted in something goes a long way, but its the extra work that separates the greats from the rest. I see this all the time in sports, business, education, etc.

And Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos were not born rich. Bezos put in the work to build up Amazon. I'm old enough to remember when the only sold books. Dude had a vision and carried through. I like being able to click on my phone, order my shit and have it sitting at my door step in 1 or 2 days.

Bezos put in that work absolutely. Gotta give him credit for that.
