Dams around the world hold so much water they've shifted Earth's poles, new research shows

The construction of thousands of dams since 1835 has caused Earth's poles to wobble, new research suggests.

…Scientists found that large dams hold so much water they redistribute mass around the globe, shifting the position of Earth's crust relative to the mantle, the planet's middle layer.

Earth's mantle is gooey, and the crust forms a solid shell that can slide around on top of it. Weight on the crust that causes it to shift relative to the mantle also shifts the location of Earth's poles, the researchers said...

Volcanoes can Fuck up weather patterns when they erupt…

Volcanoes in multiple states have been rumbling. What's going on?

Volcanoes in Alaska, Washington state, Oregon and Hawaii have been rumbling and even spewing lava, enough to spark a swarm of news stories. But despite the jolts and temblors, geologists say there's no cause for alarm.

"Volcanoes can be unpredictable, and there’s always the chance that something bad will happen, but these recent seismic events along the Pacific Ring of Fire from Alaska to Washington to offshore Oregon are probably not directly related to each other," said Natalia Ruppert, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Science Center in Seattle...

Scientists discover changes to the polar vortex that are plunging parts of US into deep freeze

Though global temperatures are warming, winters in the Northern Hemisphere are still marked by cold snaps and extreme snowfall events — sometimes to an unprecedented extent, such as the 2021 deep freeze in Texas and Oklahoma that caused over $1 billion in damage.
