A buddy of mine got shot in the chest and arm in front of one of the studios I work out of about a month and a half ago! Doctors say how he got hit was 1 in 23 million odds (no real damage), crazy shit. Son was walking around doing rehab 3 days later, talked to him five days after son is joking around and shit like he usually does. He's a soldier for sure! Crazy shit... He's not even a street dude, just a preppy lades man type. So many others haven't been so lucky in Baltimore and DC this summer, it like more haters than ever walking around these days. As of late If I have to go into certain hoods thats "hot" in the city to work, I make my moves as early as posiible and I'm back out to the burbs. Most of these cats aint got shit to lose and I'm getting too old to be fucking around playing "who's hardest" mean muggin at these lil wild ass new school ninjas. The later in the day it gets, the wilder shit gets.

While I definitely agree there are systematic and social-economic problems that have to be addressed that have been the root cause of this issue, at what point do we stop laying on that as the whole excuse and start to make progress though. To a point it becomes the blame game. Not saying there doesn't need to be change made on that end, but we cannot ignore the impacts we are having in our community, or excuse them away while our young men are dying and 'wait' for a change in other area before we acknowledge and address our inner community problems. We are fighting BOTH sides of the coin, however, we do realize there are two sides to the coin...
Also, you said you wish it was that simple to decide not to do it, well in some ways it is. Just last November 2015 during a Summit we had to initiate dialog, and then follow up visits and meetings with the community we were able to get two rival gangs in Bridgeton, NJ to call a truce and participate together in our movement against the local police department due to the death of Jerame Reid. Not only did they agree to it, but even after the first wave of the protests were done, they kept the violence WAY down between the two groups, only 1 shooting and a couple of fights since then, and 3 of the gang members finished their GED program, and one of the starts at Gloucester County Community College this month. Again, a very small step, but a positive step nonetheless.
My organization is working on these issues in other communities, Camden, Trenton, Wilmington, and it's not going to be easy, but after 40 years of deflection, we are attacking both sides of the coin and seeing results. I don't judge anybodys position, but I also can't in clear conscience deflect to what the conditions are and not at least try to make an impact. I can't keep watching our young fellas killing each other, waiting for the system to change...
