For the record, lost two WD externals (my 1st from early '00s & one I borrowed) and a Seagate (my 2nd ever from the same time pd)
The 3TB ethernet WD cloud has been my shit, am a lil over halfway filled to capacity & am only looking for these and up, fuck all them other drives plus nonsense.Frigging Seagate.....

Haha at me still having them shits connected to hubs on my setup hoping they'll come back from 'hybernation' one day since they still power up.....
Please do or whatever because I was talkin that same type shit......the borrowed one went 1st and I got over it because I was on some backup shit and burnt dvd flicks but that 1st 120WD hurt my heart along with the Seagate 3 or 500gb even though it wasn't my main go to and I still don't quickly recall what''s on it so it wasnt super important.

I back up everything on like 3-4 HDs...I try not to hoard too many files and such so that the really important shit can even be backed up on thumb drives...but I understand that's not the case w/ everybody esp. if they create movies music pics etc...the only thing I need them TB drives for is my video games and that info is saved if my drives fail

Nowadays I need a great reason to care abt holding onto shit I can easily replace.....
The quality getting upgraded every few months also makes saving some shit moot....

I used to burn EVERYTHING to DVDS but I stopped giving a fuck a while back once I saw how certain torrents are available, accessible and replaceable. I still have that option but too much shut is replaceable for me to truly give a fuck until I get another TB ex HD for backups specifically.

I saw this on slickdeals and was going to bite, but I'm hoping amazon does a price match. Costco has a 5TB for 119., but one of the reviews said it was slow.

I always keep backups but I have never once had a hard drive fail on me. I have dropped drives and got the click of death but never out of the blue fail me.
My smallest raid5 set is 6TB largest is 12TB and I have quite a few so backing up is not an option.
RAID is alive and well.

Isn't raid 5 outdated? SHR is like raid 5 but you can upgrade your drives later on to larger size disks.

SHR can use diff sized disks to build a redundant storage array. RAID5 will only use the capacity of the smallest disk. I do also have a freenas volume that has redundancy but I dislike any software only solution that handles redundancy. I prefer to start with a hardware solution (yes, drivers are software too).
When raid is officially buried, then I will move on.
SHR is RAID5. SHR is also RAID1. It's basically RAID1 when there's 1 or two drives, and then RAID5 when there's 3 or more.
SHR is just marketese for linux mdraid that Synology uses.
I have not heard about SHR available on a standalone basis. It seems to be available for use only with a Synology hardware (NAS) product.
If they has a standalone product (like FREENAS) or some driver-based software/driver that could be installed on the Windows platform, I would try it and most likely use it. I don't want a piece of hardware that can only be used for a specific purpose. RAID spans all platforms.
