5TB Western Digital portable USB 3.0 HDD - $90

I once had two 5Tb drives die on me within weeks of each other. I can't even fathom putting 12Tb on one drive without a double backup.

If my main external go down, I do not use the back up external at all. I wait until I’m able to afford another one, then I transfer my data to the new external and use the back up as the main one. The new external becomes my back up drive, which is stored away.

I feel you on that. I have all of my primary data on a rackmount server with 4 3TB drives in a RAID 5 config. I run backups across 3 different externals splitting the load of folders. I'd probably get the 12TB to serve as a backup disk for all of the folders combined as well as the OS. Only problem would be finding a USB 3.0 card that is compatible with my version VMWare cuz USB 2.0 will take all day to do the backups.

Yeah, it takes me over 2 days to do all my backups on USB2.0 and I can’t get around it because my Linux server is over 12 years old. I actually spend days planning and prepping for the back up. I can’t be caught by no bad storms or unexpected power outages.

Speaking of power outages. Do you (or anyone in this thread) have a back up battery in case the power do go out and you have time to properly shutdown your computer.

I have a UPS connected to my server and one connected to my desktop. I currently run my server backups from my desktop and have it do the backups on the server folders via network mappings on my pc. If the OS for my server VM crashes then I'd have to build it from scratch. I might just get a small USB drive for that and connect it directly to the server since the OS is much smaller and won't take as long. If I get that 12TB drive, I'd run the backup from my desktop and have it be a backup of my backups.

Other than the drive being portable, why pay $90 for a 5TB drive when a 10TB is only $69? A case to enclose a HD can be had for around $20-30.

What 10TB drive are you finding for $69? I'm not seeing anything under $180 for a single 10TB drive, not even for a refurb, and it definitely not a WD or HGST drive.

Damn that sucks. That's a monster come up to find a drive with that much capacity for so cheap. Do you remember what brand it was?

ALWAYS run a scan of the drive BEFORE you start dumping data on it. I use HDTUNE to scan any drive I buy for errors. It's free and the pro version has a 30 day free trial.

Also, if you buy a WD drive, you can use their in house WD Diagnostics to scan the drive.

It takes a long ass time to scan big ass drives, but I guarantee you that most people who gave certain drives bad reviews didn't scan them for errors prior to using them.

Portable simply refers to the fact that it draws all the power it needs from the USB port. Moving any disc while it's spinning could damage it no matter the brand.

If you can't afford two similar drives (1 for storage and 1 as a backup), imo you shouldn't buy large capacity drives.
GOOD INFO HERE

Why the hell do you niggas need to save 12 tbs worth of shit for?
You askin for the gubberment …. or are you the gubberment ???

Video and audio.
ProRes files ain't no joke. Neither are FLAC files. Multi-track recordings will eat your drive up faster than a motherfucker.
Or...as niggas like to say on here:
RAW
(If you do video, you'll get it)

Damn, this shit will last a lifetime... I might snatch 2, one for my private shit, and one to leave for family records/legacy/lifetime photos.
