Schmidt: Apple is jealous of Android’s success, that’s why they’re suing

They made record earnings on the iPhone. Which is on Americas top carriers and on multiple carriers worldwide yet they have no penetration into china which is why they r gonna release the 3GS for 350 no contract in the next few months. Also the 3GS sells for 9 dollars on AT&T as a refurb and 50 brand new on two year contract. Next year they'll break this years record because they'll have the iPhone on tom and sprint plus the cheap iPhone and the new version plus if they come out with the 3G enabled iPod that'll count as an iPhone too so more sales.

:hmm: Apple made nearly as much in China as Google made everywhere.

“China was very key to our results” Apple COO Tim Cook during today’s earnings call, announcing that the country accounted for $3.8 billion in revenue this quarter and $8.8 billion cumulatively in the first three quarters of this year. Cook said that while the company hadn’t “learned to play perfectly” in the market he didn’t think anyone would have believed that the world’s most populous country would comprise such a large percentage of total revenue a year ago. Apple stores in China are the fastest growing and have the highest numbers on average in terms of both traffic and revenue.

Apple passes Nokia to become world’s top smartphone vendor

Nokia has been overtaken by Apple as the world’s biggest smartphone producer by volume after another sharp fall in sales during the second quarter.

The troubled Finnish mobile phone maker made a net loss of €368m ($524m) during the three-month period as revenues declined 7 per cent to €9.3bn.

Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by 34 per cent to 16.7m units, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by Apple in its second quarter.

Apple was already the biggest smartphone maker by revenue and profits, but the April-June period marked the first time it had surpassed Nokia in volume.

The results highlighted the crisis facing Nokia as it struggles to stem market share losses not only to the iPhone but also a growing range of internet-enabled devices using Google’s Android operating system.

Stephen Elop, chief executive, said the group’s challenges were “manifested in a greater than expected way” in the quarter, but insisted that recovery efforts had “started to have a positive impact” on the business.

“We are making better-than-expected progress towards our strategic goals,” he said.

Nokia in February agreed a strategic alliance with Microsoft to make a new range of smartphones using the US technology group’s Windows Phone software, with the first product expected by the end of the year.

“Those who already have viewed our early Windows Phone work are very optimistic about the devices Nokia will bring to market,” said Mr Elop.

The positive remarks helped lift Nokia shares by 3 per cent to €4.21 after the results were announced on Thursday. Investor expectations were low after the group issued a profit warning in May.

Stuart Jeffrey, analyst at Nomura, said the results highlighted Nokia’s “sharp decline in competitiveness, but did beat lowered market expectations”.

Nokia’s shift to the Microsoft platform has accelerated the decline in its existing Symbian range of smartphones, forcing the group to cut prices to entice customers.

In addition to pressure at the high-end of the market, Nokia is also under siege in the developing world from low-cost Chinese manufacturers of more basic handsets.

Including lower-end devices, Nokia sold a total of 88.5m phones during the quarter, a decline of 20 per cent from the year before.
