RIP Sonny Rollins - The Saxophone Colossus

I posted a RIP, already....

Practically The Last of The Greats.

Will never forget hanging outside of MOMA, trying to get into its Sculpture Garden for a free gig He did. Could not even get in. Crowd was insane. I was able to hear some of the music. But I ended up getting the CD recording instead.

One of My favorite Customers was a local Jazz Singer here in NYC during The 50s/60s. Every time He stops by My job, or sees Me in the neighborhood, He always tells Me His Sonny Rollins story about running into him in Greenwich Village during the 70s/80s. He said that Rollins was absolutely shocked that someone even recognized him.

Glad to see Sonny's passing honored with a sticky. Wayne Shorter passed a couple years ago with barely a mention. He left us a bunch of classics that will always keep him alive with us.

I always loved to hear the stories of the friendly rivalry between Sonny and Coltrane. At times, Sonny would call Trane on the phone, play a phrase on the horn and hang up without saying a word. A few minutes later, Trane would call Sonny with an "answer" on his own horn and hang up. Some days they would go on exchanging ideas on their horns for hours over the phone without a single word being spoken. Just two geniuses pushing each other to greatness.

I had the pleasure of seeing him many times since he lived in NYC and could pop up in a jam session at any time. I also sat with him on the bridge when he first started that but it quickly became a tourity thing so I bailed.
He's definitely on the Mt Rushmore of tenors but not a Titan.
He was a prickly sonofabitch too. When Diz contacted him to play on Sonny Side Up he didn't know he'd be trading eights with Sonny Stitt (another great and overlooked tenor) and was pissed the fuck off. But Dizz, being Dizz calmed shit down (after being the one to start the shit in the first place) but you can practically feel the fire coming out of Sonny's horn on the first cuts. And Stitt gets salty in his own right and starts blazing right back. A phenomenal LP.
