Eddie Murphy and his family have addressed the loss of their loved one Charlie Murphy, who died of leukemia Wednesday at age 57.

“Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle, and friend Charlie,” the Murphy family said in a statement. “Charlie filled our family with love and laughter, and there won’t be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed. Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and prayers. We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us.”

Best known for his work as a writer and performer on the sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show, Charlie Murphy also worked with younger brother Eddie on the script for 2007’s Norbit and voiced Llyod the dog in the movie. More recently, he appeared in the Adult Swim series Black Jesus and the comedy-horror film Meet the Blacks, and he’ll be featured on the upcoming season of the Starz drama Power.

Murphy’s death was also mourned by fellow comedians, actors, and friends on social media.

Eddie Murphy on His Brother Charlie: He Is My Best Impression

UPDATED

Hollywood is mourning the passing of Charlie Murphy, a gifted comedian who died of leukemia Wednesday at age 57.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Murphy family issued the following statement:

“Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle and friend Charlie. Charlie filled our family with love and laughter and there won’t be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed. Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and prayers. We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us.”

Variety interviewed Eddie last September, where he spoke lovingly about his older brother.

“Charlie is actually my best impression,” Eddie revealed, after learning Charlie was among the top results when “Eddie Murphy impressions” is googled.

“I’ve been doing him since I was two or three. He was my first impression,” Eddie added. “I wish he would get famous because people could see this great impression that I do.”

Of course, Charlie was famous in his own right, starring on and writing for “Chappelle’s Show.” Charlie was also slated to appear on the upcoming season of “Power” on Starz.

In a 2009 interview with Essence, Charlie spoke about his relationship with Eddie.

“I’ve never felt like I was living in anyone’s shadow,” the elder Murphy said. “My life was what it was. I was always proud of my brother. He helped me tremendously, but we’re family so we were never in his shadow.”

Charlie was Eddie’s only sibling. He’s survived by three children; two with his wife Tisha, who sadly died of cervical cancer in 2009.

It is strange. Having a sibling that cast such huge shadow Charlie Murphy was able to have his own name thanks to the Chappelle show. For years he had been Eddie Murphy's brother Charlie Murphy, but after the Chappelle show most people knew him as Charlie Murphy and not Eddie Murphy's brother

This is funny because I was just reading about Diana Ross's brother yesterday. He was always jealous of Diana Ross because he could never live outside of her shadow and it swallowed him whole. He ended up addicted to drugs and brutally murdered 1996.

Charlie Murphy became his own man. A lot of people didn't know that he was a writer as well. he was also a Navy man like I was so I will close this with a saying that we say in the Navy when someone has passed on or retires, Fairwinds and following Seas Charlie Murphy. Rest in peace

Yoooo this shit made me choke on my drink
HAHAHAHHAH!

Damn I just got the hiccups cuz of you.
Lol, mutherfucka said I got the hiccups cuz of you

That's the thing about comedy man. Instead of crying and being sad that Charlie Murphy is dead, I am laughing at you crazy motherfuckers talking about him, all of the videos clips and scenes posted online. To be able to touch so many people in a positive way to bring laughter is pure talent.

This man was a part of 3 of my all time favorite shows: Chappelle Show, The Boondocks & Black Jesus. Had the opportunity to see him live when he & Ashy Larry opened up for Chappelle @ Radio City a couple yrs ago. I just remember laughing all nite, me & wifey pleasantly surprised at how funny he was live.

Another crushing loss of a real person, a brother. This hurts, but in no way as much as it could for his family.

Rest In Peace Charlie Murphy. Thank you for the laughter & joy you've provided me & my family, particularly during a REEEEEEEAL shitty time in my life thats only just now starting to pass.

Salute.

I'm glad things are getting better for you brother. It's funny how certain small things like a comedy show or a TV show or Sports can get us through difficult times period I hope your situation continues to improve

I also wanted to recognize that you had Bass Reeves as your avatar. That's dope. so few people know about bass Reeves. I think that's whose spirit Denzel was evoking in The Magnificent Seven

Thank you for the well wishes brother, much appreciated. As soon as i heard about Baas Reeves in the Hidden Colors series, I was hooked. I was also PISSED DA FUCK OFF that I hadn't learned about him until then. Absolutely criminal, especially when all the so-called [white] hero stories/movies of the west were supposedly based on his experiences as a lawman. Never heard of the Denzel influence for the movie, but I wouldnt put it past him.

Charlie Murphy was a big part of my entertainment & healing the past few yrs. This hit me as hard as Sean P's death did....stopped listening to hiphop for a minute off that. This? All I can do is keep watching like I have been and appreciate the talent and work. :dunno:
