Parents can only do so much, the economy does not help. I have had many students who only seen their parents in the morning before leaving out from school because the parent has to work long shifts and doesn't get home until very late. A lot of single parent households deal with this issue, some parents working two jobs because they have multiple kids and now not only does the teenager have to deal with the stresses of high school they also have to play parent to their siblings because mom is at work. Had one student, God rest her soul, that went mental due to the stresses. She came in a freshman, happy, full of life, wanting to play basketball. She couldn't do anything she dreamed because she had the responsibility of taking care of her younger brother, picking him up from school, watching him, fixing food, and helping with homework until mom came home late at night. It hit it's boiling point in junior year when she started acting out and doing psychotic things, was heavily depressed and mom ended up admitting her. When she came out she wasn't the same. Saw videos of ppl filming and making fun of her in a store, she was talking a bunch of gibberish. I felt bad for her. Then I guess she got sane and ended up with her father at some point, had a daughter, then she was murdered a few years ago in her father's building staircase after an argument, not sure if she knew the guy or not.
But yea, point of the story is.. parents can only do so much when they're under the financial stress of trying to keep a roof over their heads and underpaid.
